Evening, kiddiwinks.

Portable Vivaldi 3.2.1967.47 now available

Vivaldi's recently upgraded from 3.1 to 3.2, so Uncle Mike's put together portables for the new version.

You'll notice some extra updaters when you first enter the Vivaldi-portable directory. Vivaldi are the only developers who've provided scripts for keeping FFmpeg & WideVine up-to-date. Previously I've used them to generate the upgraded versions, which I've then 'installed' into the builds, because they create the updates in /var/opt, of all places.

After some head-scratching, and some judicious modifications, this is all now built-in to the portable's directory.

There are slight differences between the two builds. Only the 32-bitzer has both Update-FFmpeg AND Update-WideVine. The 64-bitzer only has the FFmpeg updater. Reason for this is that where the ffmpeg script works for both platforms, and doesn't discriminate, for some stupid reason the Widevine script only seems to download 32-bit binaries/libs.....the version supplied with the 64-bit build downloads the wrong ELF class.

This isn't an issue, since WideVine is very easy to "borrow" from Chrome.....and I've always got an up-to-date copy of that. The 64-bit version of Vivaldi even comes with a sym-link already in place pointing to /opt/google/chrome! Which of course hasn't been available for 32-bit Linux for the best part of 5 years....and probably explains why the 32-bit build has its own, separate set of update mechanisms.

Well, that one didn't hang around for long..!

Almost immediately, Vivaldi have rushed 3.3.2022.45 out the door. No major startling changes to report, except for the one Vivaldi seem to be making a big fuss about:-

I'm starting to wonder about their developers. Together with the 'note-taking' feature introduced in 3.1, it seems Vivaldi are starting to rely on sheer gimmickry to "sell" their browser.....

Agreed. I ended up switching to Waterfox. Simpler, faster and lighter than Vivaldi (in my system, at least; although Pale Moon 32bit still remains as my primary browser).

Oh, don't get me wrong.....it's still a good browser, and one of the few 'clones' that are still available in 32-bit. But there's no getting away from the fact that these Chromium browsers only really start to shine when you've got at least 4-8 GB to "play" with.....and since I've upped my "take" to 16 GB (along with having a far more powerful CPU these days), I now really enjoy them once again.

At least as much as I used to enjoy the older, far lighter versions when I 'only' had 3 GB.....!

No sweat. I kind of agree, I guess

I tried to adopt it but it's far from being what it intended to become, a "spiritual" successor to Opera 12 (which I still use as mail client and little else).

And toe to toe with other browsers, I couldn't find any benefit from its use (set aside "nostalgia"

): clunky interface, weird problems, bugs, unresponsive every now and then, ram "hogging"... too much. So I gave up, disappointed.

But hey! "One man's trash is another man's treasure" LOL

... nahh, just kidding

64bit version does not work in Fatdog810:
"cannot open shared object file libpcre.so.3"

BTW: Maybe not surprisingly I got the same error when trying the Iron 'portable'.

I don't use Vivaldi as my primary browser, but I keep it on my system because 'Tablo' only works properly on a Chrome based browser. Otherwise I prefer one of the Mozilla based browsers.

Hello! I have been using the Vivaldi browser since its first release. It is my main browser, due to the ease of customization. At Vivaldi, the ad blocker and trackers are great. My portable version, works entirely in the "spot" directory, without spreading files across the system. To work on FatDog64 810 and 811, it is necessary to have the following packages installed (the same to run Google, Firefox ...): at-spi2-atk-2.26.2-x86_64-1; at-spi2-core-2.28.0-x86_64-1; glib-networking-2.56.1-x86_64-1; gsettings-desktop-schemas-3.28.0-x86_64-1; gtk3-3.22.30-x86_64-1; librest-0.8.1-x86_64-1 and libsoup-2.62.3-x86_64-1 which can be found at https://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/packages/810/. You can borrow WidevineCdm on an updated Google Chrome and libffmpeg.so at https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keyw ... mpeg-extra and place it in the vivaldi / lib folder. Anyone who watches Netflix needs it. The Speed Dial prints you can customize to your liking and create a directory within "vivaldi", as well as backgrouds.

With regard to libffmpeg, I take it you ARE aware that every current release of Vivaldi comes with scripts that download & install the newest versions of libffmpeg, and WidevineCdm? Whilst I agree it's simple enough to 'borrow' Widevine from Chrome, ffmpeg always takes more tracking down, since it has to be whatever the version is that's been compiled to work with the particular release of Chromium that Vivaldi is built around.

Seems to me it makes a deal more sense to use the scripts that are specifically written for the job.....

YMMV, of course.

@mikewalsh It is not as simple as you describe it. After failing to launch with LAUNCH in Fatdog, I tried my luck with a fresh install of Fossapup:
"Cannot open shared object file libffi.so.6"

Which are the distros you test your portable packages with? Knowing in advance where I can expect success will make life easier for me

Hello, Mochi. The Pups I mostly build these to work with are the long-term, stable ones; Xenialpup64 7.5 & Bionicpup64 8.0 for 64-bit, and DPup Stretch 7.5 for 32-bit.

Debian/Ubuntu-based Pups tend to have a lot more included by default. Slacko-based Pups always seem to need lots of stuff adding to get things working, but this is a legacy of Slackware's minimalist, install-only-what-you-want policy.....

The couple of times recently I tried FatDog, it wouldn't run the portables at all from outside. I had to "install" the portable INSIDE FatDog before it would even look at it.

I've just tried Google_Chrome-portable, Iron-portable & Vivaldi-portable in a pristine Bionicpup64 - (pfix=ram). All three fired straight up without issues.

fatdog811 with a lot of errors in the starting terminal but it still gets there

Mm-hm. Those aren't errors, y'know.....not as such.

Right from day one, the Chromium-based browsers were always designed to have a "live", on-going debugger session that's updating in real time while the browser itself is running. Which is why terminal readout always looks like it's throwing nothing but errors.....

Helps developers to spot, very quickly, where any issues are with new code. And it's always useful for trouble-shooting.

I really do wish they would crack down on the bugs in this browser instead of useless "features"..bug after bug with it and that is even in a so called stable version.I don't think they have the manpower to fix them all.It is a nice browser to use but these gimmicks/features they insist on employing are more to attract new users.

Right. New release for y'all. Vivaldi 3.4.2066.86 is now available as a 'portable' build.

I've made some modifications. I've removed all the 'updater' scripts from immediately inside the portable directory, on the same level as the 'LAUNCH' script. Pepperflash is pointless, because it will be EOL in a matter of weeks.....and the Widevine and ffmpeg scripts are no longer behaving themselves, apparently downloading older versions than were available with the previous release!

Pepperflash is still there, but I've put the latest version in for you. Likewise with Widevine and ffmpeg.

Guess what Vivaldi's newest 'feature' is, to attract newcomers? It's.....wait for it, wait for it.....an ARCADE GAME.

Yep, that's right; an 80's-style arcade game, called, fittingly I suppose, "Vivaldia"!

I've said before on this thread that Vivaldi appear to be relying on sheer novelty value to attract new users, and I see no reason to change that view. However, they have, to their credit, made some sensible additions & modifications, too.

Right-clicking any tab will now offer the option for 'Periodic reload'. If you have several tabs open, this auto-reloads each tab in the background for you, at intervals you can select. Keeps your tabs 'current', y'see. Neat.

The other one that is of interest for these Puppy portable builds is one that makes them more portable than ever. Previously, when moving the browser directory from one physical location to another, you had to manually 'reset' Widevine through 'chrome://components', to tell the browser the location of Widevine itself before it could 'see' it. This now appears to happen completely automatically; I'm guessing they've employed something along the lines of the 'tee' function that seaside employed a while back when we were trying to sort out Widevine & NetFlix playback in Opera late last year.

Whatever the reason, it's all taken care of for you, so credits to the Vivaldi team for that one!

I'm not going to apologise for the inexorable 'ballooning' in size of Vivaldi; it's doing so far faster than all the other clones, which I put down to the inclusion of these novelty 'features' they've insisted on including over the last few releases. You form your own judgements on that.....

The main reason I keep up with this one, in addition to Iron, is because these two both still run in 32-bit Pups. It's as simple as that.....and Uncle Mike does like to provide as big a choice as possible. Posting from it in DPup 'Stretch' right now.

wow awesome I now have a chromium based browser I can use on my old laptop (Pentium M 1.2Ghz, 1GB, TahrPup) to login into google ... typing from it right now ... thanks !!!
(tried also with Iron but google wont allow me to login)

(there were some missing libraries ... I took them from Iron except libffmpeg which was already there ... and then added

It doesn't matter what you try with Vivaldi, you just cannot change the download location......it won't let you. At least, I've never been able to..!

The attached .pet, however, may help in Tahrpup. It adds a few XML 'schema' files to /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas, along with the command to 're-compile' the directory database at each boot.....sym-linked into /root/Startup. Crucially, it includes the all-important 'FileChooser' item, which tells the file-system what to do with things.

I don't think it'll help with Vivaldi, though. It'll work for all other browsers, just not that one....

(The 'FileChooser' XML file comes with all modern Puppies by default, but you have to remember that Tahrpup was a very early Woof-CE build. Not all this stuff had been included into the master 'build-recipe' at that point in time.)

I've just tried Vivaldi 64bit (portable and .deb versions) and I found no problem changing the download location

(Vivaldi 32bit dies in my system spitting a "segmentation fault" with its last breath).

However, I can't run Vivaldi-portable from the LAUNCH script (it asks for some library).

So I run it as simply as I could: ./vivaldi-bin --no-sandbox

And then I had no trouble whatsoever.

(I must add that I never install a .pet or a .deb in my system as a first. I decompressed them and copy the program folder to the opt directory. It goes without saying that in this manner some apps won't work).

So this trouble regarding "static" downloads locations could be related to something spoilt in Vivaldi user profile, I guess.

Any knowledge of where Vivaldi portables will work without installing libraries?

my Tahr32:

Vivaldi 1.9 installs and runs with switches from .deb.

1.13 I have portable, and it won't run. Nor will 1.15 installed from .deb.

Vivaldi 2.5 runs on Xenial. 3.3 runs on Xenial w/HTML5 run error.

The industry is primarily occupied with security and bugs. I'm primarily occupied with compatibility (x2, os w/browser, and browser with sites), and system resources.

I don't give it a hard run, but Vivaldi 1.9 is still compatible with the sites I use it for. I would use Vivaldi more with a running portable.

Just an announcement, and some info for y'all.

As you know, recent releases of Vivaldi came with first a word-processor, then that stupid arcade game. I've just read the following blog over at OMG!Ubuntu!, and according to this the next addition is going to be a built-in email client, a la SeaMonkey:-

Unlike some of the previous stuff, this is not at all a daft idea. It's still in 'beta' ATM, and is still suffering a number of bugs.....but won't be too long before it's at release stage and fully-functional. So it may well be something that some of you can look forward to....

Watch this space. It's due for mainstream release as of v3.5, sometime early next year.
