Canon Pixma MG2500 Printer series.

Post by TiredPup »

The printer drivers for the Pixma MG2500 Printer series are now included with most linux distributions. In setting up VoidPup64 for my printer I observed that the driver for this printer is included in the drop down menu during the setup up process and the printer does install. However it fails to print returning the message "stopped: filter failure". I made a few unsuccessful attempts at resolving this issue but failed. I then recalled that user rcrsn51 had a lengthy thread on the old forum for Canon Printer Drivers. It was updated in 2016. He deleted the content in the first few posts stating that the information was obsolete but much of that thread remains intact and can be found here: https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=80051.

EDIT:

The cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz https://asia.canon/en/support/0100550201 and the scangearmp-mg2500series-2.20-1-deb.tar.gz https://asia.canon/en/support/0100551901packages are still available at the Canon Asia website.

I am making both files and the install script candi-1.4.pet available with this link https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing.

User rcrsn51 provided a script (candi-1.4.pet) to facilitate proper installation on Puppy Linux. It can be found here https://web.archive.org/web/20150905062 ... hp?t=80051.

All 3 files are also available here (thanks to ally) https://archive.org/details/Puppy_Linux ... river_Repo

Use the following steps to install the drivers.

Install candi-1.4.pet
extract the contents of cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz
Navigate to the sub-folder named packages
Open a terminal window in that folder
Enter the following command without the quotes "candi cnijfilter-common_4.00-1_amd64.deb"
Press Return
Followed by the command without the quotes "candi nijfilter-mg2500series_4.00-1_amd64.deb"
Press Return

Select Cups Print Manager from the Puppy "setup" menu and proceed to install the printer via CUPS.

The folder also contains the drivers for 32 bit systems.

The same process can be used to get the scanner working on this model. That archive contains both 32 and 64 bit scanner drivers for the Pixma MG 2500 and may be installed by entering "candi" from the commandline followed by the file name. Then press Return/Enter to complete the installation of each of the 2 files.

I will look to add here the configuration files and info on the installation of the avahi service to make a Tahr-6.0.5 and a Canon MG2500 be an AirPrint capable network printer. Can print directly from Android and Apple devices.
Same method could be used to do the same using a newer Puppy Linux and the Canon. Some time ago I found a scanner driver and a simple GUI from Canon for the MG2500 that I've used now for quite awhile for scanning. Works well.
