Trying Vanilla pup; issues

Hi, I'm kind of new to linux, mostly trying to get old computers working, and therefore I'm getting to know the branches of the Puppy tree. First of all, thank you very much for continuing with the development of Puppy projects, many people think that it is only Fossapup and do not see beyond it.
Now, my doubt-report:
I am trying to run Vanillapup on a HP mini 110 mini laptop, with 1gb ram and atom n455 CPU at 1.6 ghz, but
1) Just boot to console, try to load desktop, pointer appears, then says xwin failed to boot
2) After loading the desktop with xorgwizard, (sometimes it works for me, other times it doesn't) I can't start the applications, I can open the menu, but when I hit enter in any application, nothing happens, so I can't even enter Lxterminal .
My first conclusion is that the minilap can't handle Vanillapup, maybe it's too limited, although I can use Slacko64 7.0, Fossapup64, Q4OS 32bit and Windows7 starter.
I tried it with both versions, 32 and 64 bits, as well as with 2 different usb sticks.
Could it be that the minipc is not compatible, or am I doing something wrong?

EDIT:
I make another try, this time I used rufus on a Windows 10 computer to make the usb bootable, (I used Windows 7 before, with an old version of Rufus and Universal USB Installer) and it worked perfectly. I don't know if it's a bug or some system failure, or some writing error that the system doesn't tell me.
Thanks for the replies, I'm trying to get used to Puppy and there are too many things I don't know.

Sorry if I'm not writing clearly, I'm using a translator.

Before you draw conclusions, please share the output of:

cat /var/log/messages
dmesg
rm /var/local/xwin_disable_xerrs_log_flag; xwin; cat /tmp/xerrs.log (after you're dropped back to the console)
lsmod

And, please specify which version you tried.

Please send more logs, at least dmesg and cat /var/log/messages.

Thanx dimkr,

Sorry dimkr, I don't know how 2 Post the Output of dmesg Command from LXTerminal 2 here, Control A & Control Shift A ( 2 Select All doesn't work ) nor does Control C or Control Shift C ( 2 Copy of course )

Also Sorry about the Message file being Truncated ( Edited ) from /var/log/messages, Because I got a Warning that I could only Post a Maximum of 60000 Characters & My Messages File was about 193,000 Characters, So by my rough Calculations, I'll Need 2 Post another 36 or so eXcerpts of the Message File, Hopefully without Duplications & Overlaps!

That'll be an Awefull Lot of Reading! I'm Truly Sorry about this mate.

@+Me Can you upload the whole thing to some site instead of putting a small sample here? Say, pastebin.com

At a glance, I don't see anything unusual or errors. Can you describe the problem more clearly?

@+Me: How are you setting up the flash drive? With dd? With an installer tool?

BTW, how are you capturing dmesg logs from a machine that won't boot?

Are you booting from a CD? If not, can you share the boot loader configuration file? Do you use pmedia=cd although it's not a CD?

And, I don't understand: does it work? I don't understand if the problem is failure to boot, or successful boot with a 1m delay and a red "failed".

Hi @rcrsn51,
I presume: the booting stops and drops out to a console. Then you can use "debugsave"-command to save debuginfo like dmesg-logfile to a partition.

peace

,@dimkr For a few months on a 16GB SDHC card I had, frugal installs of: BionicPup32, FossaPup64, UPupFF+D32, all working fine. Yesterday, I booted into FossaPup64, and ran FrugalPup Installer. I installed JammyPup32, CloudPup64, VoidPup64. After each (successful frugal) install I booted from each to ensure all was OK. (Even checked grub.cfg with Geany-all OK.) Then, I, using Frugal installer , from FossaPup64, installed VanilladPup. When I then tried to boot from it, on screen only pup was it, NONE OF THE OTHERS! It booted, and when I looked into grub.cfg, it was alone! I was a little pi**** off, and cleaned it off grub-please see attachment. However, in th sdb2 partition, The pups remain. There must be a simpler way to get them all back besides wiping the disk and starting anew.I'd gladly appreciate any advice. Thank you.

You can restore the content of grub.cfg. It shouldn't be hard to rewrite the file, because are the same except psubdir= (if you use that) and some paths, like the vmlinuz and initrd.gz paths.

I don't know what caused this data loss, it could be a bug in Frugalpup. I never use it myself: I just copy *.sfs, initrd.gz, vmlinuz and ucode.cpio to a directory, then add an entry to the boot loader configuration file, with the correct paths.

Install grub2config-2.0.1, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 703#p29703 into VanilladPup. Restart-X (AKA graphical server): Reboot & Save is UNNECESSARY. Start grub2config (from Setup Submenu). Select sdb1 as the location for its install. It may complain that CDR-tools are not available. But I think it will run and create a boot-loader with grub.cfg on sdb1. grub.cfg will have menu-entries for all your Puppy, I think including VanilladPup. I know it handles the others. When I added VanilladPup I manually edited grub.cfg.

It would be really nice if you answered this question.

Is this a grub4dos bootable flash drive?

Sorry rcrsn51, Balena Etcher I think Not dd. I Guess it's grub4dos because it's a 32-bit iso, so that it'll Run on Old Atom & Celeron Netbooks.

If you have a patch for that - I don't mind pushing it into woof-CE.

No patch
it seemed to me that it would work with "cal"
but it only works in terminal :(

Hello,
I´d like to share my observation (or maybe my confusion?) when using VanillaDpup64 9.2.4:

1/ I installed VLC player with synaptic. After first launch the vlc shows this error message:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///home/spot/%25U'. Check the log for details.

No idea if some action is required but the audio is playing well.

2/ some terminal apps seem to have a problem when I want to start them from a tray.
I installed Htop with synaptic. It works well but when I add it to a tray it won´t launch. I tried to start Htop in terminal and from the menu, and also to drag its .desktop file on the desktop. All this works. The line for Htop in jwmrc-tray1 looks ok IMO (<TrayButton popup="Htop" icon="htop">exec:htop</TrayButton>).
Also weechat has a similar problem. After clicking on it in the tray nothing happens but htop then shows one "weechat" proccess running. After killing it I can start it again from the menu or from the terminal.

3/ can I set the numeric keyboard to be turned automatically „on“ with each boot?
Sometimes I have to press NumLock key again during the session to be able to write numbers.

I will be glad if you advise me, although they are just little things.

2/ Do it like this
(<TrayButton popup="Htop" icon="htop">exec:urxvt -e htop</TrayButton>).

3/ First, let's install the numlockx utility that controls NumLock:
apt install numlockx

Now let's add the loading of this utility and the inclusion of NumLock to the X configuration file: enter in terminal
echo /usr/bin/numlockx on >> /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
reboot
