Using Emacs

Post by jacmoe »

Have any of you succesfully used Emacs in PuppyLinux?

I know you have. But I don´t know how you manage to get Emacs to install packages.
Use-package / straight doesn´t work.

Should you run it as spot?

Or are there a setting somewhere that allows it to fetch things from the net?

Firewall is off.

I am totally new to PuppyLinux, but I have used Linux for many years.

Thanks for any pointers :)

I am using Emacs 27.7 (AppImage), and am running the newest Fossapup64 - installed on my main machine.
For good measure, I tried Emacs 26.x from the official repo, same result: unable to find the packages.

Another related issue is that I am unable to run the Doom-Emacs installation script. It complained about not being able to find 'straight.el' in some location, and when I looked there, I noticed that there was only a .git folder and nothing else, so it didn´t download anything.
I hope that there´s a setting that can fix these issues as I am quite happy with PuppyLinux so far! But not being able to run Emacs (Doom-Emacs in particular) is an absolute show-stopper :(

Probably Emacs expect what would be in the parent of the puppy and not pkg or PPM. You'll have to do these by hand most likely.

I haven't done it in a while, but I'll see what it takes to get Emacs running Fossapup64.

I have successfully compiled and created a PET of Emacs 28.1 on Bionic64-8. Runs well as far as I can tell. I could do it for Fossapup64 if this one doesn't work.

Download the PET file(s) and click on it, let it install. I have not tested this at all yet.
