Thinking about the logo

Post by BarryK »

Today I received an email from Luca, suggesting that the current EasyOS logo is not very professional.
He suggested the logo that @Misaligned posted awhile back:

viewtopic.php?p=40218#p40218

Yes, I agree, the current logo could be better. I like what Misaligned has done, it is fine on the wallpaper; however, as a logo is needs to be simplified.

Take the Debian logo for example, just a swirl pattern:

https://www.debian.org/Pics/debian-logo-1024x576.png

I think that a potential new logo for EasyOS should:

1. Not have any text
2. Be square
3. Simple pattern that looks good down to 16x16

I took the liberty of playing with the svg posted by Misaligned. I wasn't as careful as Misaligned in getting everything parallel, etc.:

...can't put svg file inline, it is attached below.

Here it is 64x64:

logo64x64.png
logo64x64.png (3.72 KiB) Viewed 3370 times

On the desktop it would be 48x48:

logo48x48.png
logo48x48.png (2.64 KiB) Viewed 3370 times

The original svg could be made different colours, to suit different themes.

Just playing. Does this look any better|professional than the current logo?

For comparison, here is the current logo. It is available as an svg, and various colours.

Here it is grey 96x96:

Light blue, variant with thicker edges, 48x48:

I would agree that the original icon doesn't represent the project as well as it could. I think this box-in-box is a substantial improvement, very clean and precise also gives some clue to the nature of easy. Could be more "fun" or catchy but I think this is a better angle.
Just a thought (:

That is very interesting. In Inkscape, I used "Path -> Simplify", and it reduced the logo svg from 9524 bytes to 6540 bytes. And, the simplified svg is easier to work on. Attached, with false ".gz"

It looks the same:

I reckon it looks too plain. Perhaps it does need text on the sides?

For the last couple of years I've had a container desktop wallpaper in my Fatdog version that I believe came out of Audi

I also created a 48x48 scaled down version of that as my icon.

Odd. When posting my prior post above I first started my container (Fatdog/Linux) session, took a screen shot of that desktop and posted that image, and submitted the post. Later I returned to edit that post to include the second image, but when using OpenBSD (qemu). Perhaps stupidly I named both uploaded images as i.jpg, so two different images both uploaded with the same name ... which seems to have screwed phpBB processing up. At one point a edit submission had two of the first images appearing and a third image of the second image in the post, despite just one attachement label being entered (inline placement), deleting and renaming the image file names etc has left the post content in a seemingly odd state.

Short answer, don't upload/use two different images with the same name as the server throws a wobbly. Sorry.

Logos are like baby names. While any name will work, you need to hit the one that says "Yeah, that fits perfectly". This is only one man's opinion, but the box-in-a-box doesn't scream "That's the one" to me.

The others that were posted are beautifully done by someone who obviously has talent, super clean and modern, but there's nothing in there that associates them with EasyOS to me.

Here are some other box ideas. Note that some may be proprietary - I just posted them to get more creative juices flowing. The last one would be cool if you replace the cat with the the top half of the existing EasyOS logo

Just saw this post yesterday. Made me rethink the original design.
After playing around for bit, I came up with the results below. The
color in the background is just used to show the difference between
dark and light background and is not supposed to be part of the logo.
The logo with the arrow pointing down was thought to be used as
Update Icon. Well, see attachment below, just a suggestion.

PS: was trying to attach the svg as well, for some reason this did not work?
I may have to try this different. So if there is an interest in this design, I will
tackle this again.

That is simple and stylish.

Yes, I also recently discovered cannot attach an svg. Easy fix, just rename it with a false ".gz", then it will attach to a post.

Ok, just renamed it like you suggested. Lets's try it.
The colors can be easily changed, it's just one object,
except the one with the arrow, that would make it two objects
if my math is right :).

Misaligned,
That's great, opened it in Inkscape.

I clicked on one of the logos and chose "Ungroup" from the menu, but it remained as one group.
That is interesting, did you create it as a single path?

I was wondering about the "e" -- looking at it now, it kind of looks like the wheel of a cart. Was that your intention?

I understand of course, that the "e" is there because first letter of EasyOS.

Might it be a bit confusing using an 'e', as there are 2 other distributions which use and e symbol, elementary OS and also elive (Enlightment).

Barry, yes it is one path.
The "e" was supposed to stand for easy, but as Terry mentioned this might get confusing.
I can take it out. Let me know if you would like to change this.

Yeah, as TerryH says, that "e" might convey a different implication.

OK, if you don't mind, see what it looks like without the "e".

Re: Thinking about the logo

Attached the plain logo. I also organized it a bit differently and added a gray "outline" to
separate it from dark backgrounds. But of course that all depends on the logo colors
itself.

If you have Inkscape 1.2 and you open the layer dialog, everything should be self-explanatory.
If not, you might want to go to "Object -> Unhide All" first and than you can change the stacking order
of the backgrounds. There is a dark and a light background, just to be able to visualize the appearence
of the logo in either case. Other than that, everything should be "easy" to change (colorwise). You
can also just hide objects by right-click menu (arrow). You probably know this.

Anyways ....

Misaligned,
I greatly appreciate you taking the time to work on a logo.

What you have created looks good to me. More "classy" and professional compared with the cartoon face and thumbs-up.

Do other readers concur?

You asked.

It does nothing for me.
Just looks like a open box to me.

Just seems there should be something better.

What do you want the logo to convey about EasyOS?
The intended message?
EasyOS as a container system?

This to me indicates this:

Sorry, but:
Part of the problem using boxes is if it looks something like someone's Copyrighted design you could be in trouble. I had a quick look at Australias list and there are hundreds, and I hadn't looked overseas to start there. There are even some relating to software packages, especially packaging and compression tools that could be considered to be impinged on.
Can I sugest you work on a different base design. I'd hate for the group or barryk himself to get 'grabbed' into a copywrite court senario, they can go for years and cost millions, even if you eventually win.

EDIT: Not going further, but I just had some feedback from a EU Copyright specialist I know of and asked for a quick comment. Basically the comments came down to proving who had the image first, was it plagerised from elsewhere, and their method is simplified if it's registered or legally doccumented. The final comment was that the GPL is not considered superior to a government or International copyright registry and had failed a number of times.

The EasyOS legal page pretty much covers that situation:

https://easyos.org/about/legal-disclaim ... lania.html

The aggrieved party would first advise me of their perceived conflict of copyright, and I would respond by showing them the EasyOS legal statement, and immediately change the logo. It is extremely unlikely that the matter would go any further.

But then, you never know. If they are unscrupulous, with a good legal team, they might see an opportunity to get some money. Though, fighting an age pensioner with few assets, would not be worth the effort.

One possibility is to put something inside the box, that is very distinctively for EasyOS. Or, even go back to having the "Easy OS" text on the logo.

Hello. In Russian, the analogue of the word "easy" can mean both simplicity and light weight of the object. I do not know the nearest analogues (or slang) in Australia. But. If we transfer the analogy to this case... then we can draw, for example, a kettlebell from a trading scale. With an indication of the lightest mass on it.

I could run Inkscape right now, but I'm cleaning the house right now. Therefore, so far only ideas :)

Good day,

There was/is a discussion about using a box as new logo. Well, I' m not sooo exited about this and my family members like the old logo much hahaha.

But now to the facts: boxes/parcels/packages are mostly used as symbol for package managers or compressed files or else, noone associates an operation system with that. If someone thinks sth. else than the symbol's meanings above then they would think on oracle virtualbox.

Hm. I don't have another suggestion right now, but in my opinion, better the old logo stays than creating just a new logo that is not precisely thought through. There are legal/ copyright things to think, marketing/psychological aspects and others.

I just found this on distrowatch: https://distrowatch.com/11579

The current logo is no problem, everyone I know considers it as funny and likes it, but I would think about the name "EasyOS". Sorry @ Barry, but when you sit in the train and open your lappy with "EasyOS" other passengers will think that your not skilled or intelligent enough to use a difficult OS :D

Just an idea: to keep the name, but shorten to EOS or ESOS. On my wallpapers most times I do like this anyway....

Berto

Berto,
Interesting thoughts.

Actually, the letters "EOS" could be the logo.

That would be very simple, the distribution named EOS, and a logo of those letters.

Berto,
Interesting thoughts.

That would be very simple, the distribution named EOS, and a logo of those letters.

I don't believe you can / would be allowed to use EOS, at least in australia, it's name is 'owned' by Electro Optic Systems. an ASX listed Australian owned Defence and Space company with some fairly heavily patients and trade marks and registrations associated, as well as being a government group. They also have their hands into a lot of 'smart' linux stuff so we may be considered straying into their domain if BarryK tried that one. A logo can be considerd the equivalent to a trade mark over here if they want to play hardball.

There are also a few other EOS's out there, not only here, but in other countries, but here at least, other than the one above, they don't seem to cross our boundary that much.

Also the Patient and Trade mark offices are now discouraging the use of single letter name representations and send warnings out with a 'fairly pointed request' for change if you do. even if your using a GPL or equivaleny and not intending to patient or trade mark at any time.

And easylinux is a no as Easylinux is based on Ubuntu 11.04 and registered. As is Ezeelinux, easy-linux, easylinux, and a few other combinations I thought of and tried. I'm not knocking a change, but 'we' need to think before a jump, especially as EasyOS does seem to be well known and represented on the web.

I wonder if a circle with linux easyos wrapped around its outside (or something like that) would suit, with it's base and release number inside? Just a thought.

Hm, yes .. sorry I didn't research in advance. But I agree, the legal base exactly is the always problem... Must research very well before changing things.... Well, the old wisdom is: never change a running system * lol* ...

But the suggestion with a "circle" is not bad I think ... Let's see if there are some ideas about realizing that .

Still it doesn't solve my suggestion about distro-name-change ... However it was just a note to maybe think about in future...
