Hello guys ,
I have an old PC made from pieces ( Intel dual core E2160 , motherbord Biostar P4M90 -M7A) 1 gb ram .
I have installed Xenialpup 64 . First i had problems with missing files , but i fixed that :
after installing Grub4dos , a window shows with a message telling to copy some text in menu.lst file . And i did .
I reboot choosing option "Xenialpup64 installed in sda1"
Now when i shut down appears a black screen telling that xenialpup is shutting down , but i wait 10 min and nothing .
I pressed Ctrl Alt Backspace again black screen .
I 've tried in terminal command halt , again same result .
In black screen i wrote the command "wmpoweroff" and "poweoff" , nothing .
I can close manually (by pressing button) or press button restart and from boot loader menu i choose Advanced settings - Halt
Please if possible an advice .
Thanks

When you say you installed Xenialpup, do you mean a full install to an internal hard disk drive, or what? There are several ways to "install" Puppy. The recommended way is called a frugal install.

Did you create a savefile prior to shutting down.?
Grub4dos does not usually entail entering text and does it all automatically.

Thanks guys ,
I did a full install in internal hard drive sda1 .
First it was a problem with missing files (vmlinuz , initrd.gz and sfs files) but i copied and paste the text in menu.lst file , as i was told in the message . If i wouldn't put that text , xenialpup won't work properly , can't install programs and has crashes .Now xenialpup is working but won't shutdown . When i shut down appears tty1 black screen

I didn''t made a save file before reboot

A "frugal" install is usually more recommended for puppies rather than the full install. ;)

Frugal or full install , if i don't put that text in menu.lst , xenialpup will crash .
I have tested

You probably still do not have everything needed installed.

You need to start over doing a frugal install.
Frugal is just the name. It is still the complete Xenialpup, just installed in a special way.

Follow the procedure in the topics posted here:
viewforum.php?f=184

There are several topics on installing based on what type drive.
So that matters.

Tell us specifically what drive you want the install on?

Is Xenialpup the only operating system that will be on the drive?
It matters.

Do you know how to use Gparted program?

Do you have Xenialpup on something that will boot the computer, so you can use programs in Xenialpup to do the install?
I assume you do, because you seemed to have tried to use the Universal Installer.

Thanks guys ,
I have installed Xenialpup from an USB , full install . I don't understand what you mean by utility.

I will install puppy again through Frugal install . But when i will install , i will copy the text in menu.lst ?

You asked : Tell us specifically what drive you want the install on? : On internal hard drive (partition sda1 )

Xenialpup is the only operating system.

I used Gparted several times to delete and create partition of internal hard drive ( first partition sda1 formatted as ext4 , partition 2 sda2 formatted as linux swap )

You asked : Do you have Xenialpup on something that will boot the computer, so you can use programs in Xenialpup to do the install? : I don't get it . If you mean about a boot loader - i have Grub4dos when i've installed Xenialpup .
I have also Quickpet from which i've made some updates .

But i can shutdown the sistem only if i boot - from Grub4dos menu i choose "Advancéd settings " - Halt computer . Maybe this can help somehow .

If you shut down Puppy, using perhaps wmpoweroff or wmreboot
and you get to a Grub menu, then you have truly shut down Puppy.
Puppy is no longer running.
Usually it is acpi that supports poweroff
Are you booting Puppy with a noacpi or acpi=0 kernel option?
Without acpi poweroff probably will not work. Reboot usually works, even without acpi support.

At the Grub menu, you can press the power button (a normal quick press, it is not necessary to press and hold the button for 5 or 10 seconds.). This will poweroff the machine.

At the Grub menu, you can press ctrl+alt+del to reboot.

Are you using the JWM window manager?
There is a bug in older Puppys that can prevent Puppy from shutting down if you changed the window manager.
(the bug is fixed in FossaPup64.)
If you press ctrl+alt+backspace it should continue powering off. If it does not, then the problem is not due to that bug.

The ctrl+alt+backspace key combination can be set to kill X or it can be set to do nothing, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (Option "DontZap" "false")

Thanks you guys ,
I have succeeded. I resolved the problem .
I've reinstalled the Xenialpup the same way "Full install" but i copied the text in menu.lst so could be the first option in boot loader menu ( i've pasted after the row "Full install" with a gap of one row)
Now is Shutting down properly .
The problem was most likely that when i've pasted the text , i've located as last text , right under script Advanced settings (with a gap of one row ) . Somehow the script has messed up the shutdown function .

I thanks to God that have helped me .

Thank you also guys , especially Bigpup .
By the way , many problems with this pc was because of faulty ram slots .

All the best !
