Upgrade on the 'Temps' desktop weather app...

Afternoon, gang.

I've been scratching my head, trying to figure out whether to put this in 'Utilities', 'Desktop' or 'Eye Candy'.....and eventually plumped for the same location as in the old Forum.

---------------------------------------

I posted about this extremely neat, Electron-based weather app a few years ago:-

https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=112131

I haven't changed my opinion of it, either. I very much like the Python-based 'my-weather-indicator', but the Spanish developer is assiduous about deleting older builds of this and keeping it only available for relatively new distro releases......so this only runs under Bionic & Fossa ATM.

For any other Puppy, I still say 'Temps' takes some beating.

-------------------------------------

The main reason I'm posting about it again today is to notify anyone who may be using it of an 'upgrade'. The developer quit developing the original back in 2016; what I hadn't realised was that the original project had been forked over on Github. This has fixed a couple of annoying 'glitches':-

  • Date & time refusing to display

  • The OpenWeatherMap API not always working correctly, and

  • Forecast maps not showing

Everything now functions perfectly again. For anyone interested in doing the 'upgrade', you can find the new versions here:-

https://github.com/musicpro/temps/releases

Although it's a couple of years old, this project is substantially more up-to-date than the original. And still runs very sweetly...

Just d/l; unzip, then swap over the complete 'Temps-linux-ia32' or 'Temps-linux-x64' directory. That's all you need to do; your existing config will be picked up & used as normal.....except you'll now notice everything's working as it should again.

For anybody who's new to this, read the thread on the old Forum first, then come back here for the actual download. Don't forget to visit the OpenWeatherMap website to pick up your own free API (this will need an a/c to be created first). The trial API supplied with the app only works for so long, then quits.

Hope some of you find this helpful.

Mike. ;)
