Friendly-Bionic32 v1.1

This remaster is based on bionicpup32-8.0+29-uefi
Thanks go to peebee
Overall Objectives:
- version for older 32bit hardware
- provide users with a version that minimizes the frustration of adopting a new operating system.
Include these components:
-a simplified desktop
-a simplified taskbar
-a background and theme that presents both style and tech. First impressions count.
-Mainstream browser, easily updateable Poor web function is a deal breaker
-a list on the desktop of many installed applications along with a short description of function
-a launcher directory, Mydesk, on the desktop, containing the most common tools and applications
-detailed local howto/tutorials for the most common setup/operating task facing a new user
Project considerations:
The .doc format was chosen for the tutorial/howto files since it would be the easiest to create, edit, maintain or adapt to other Puppys. Libre Write was used to create the originals.
The tutorials intent is not to make the user a Puppy expert. Not to bombard them with five ways to do everything, but to give them ONE way, hopefully easy, to do a common task.
This is the target user group criteria:
-Hardware is a 32 bit, single or dual core cpu, 512mb ram, only one internal drive (if installing to internal drive)
-Windows user, other Linux user, Mac user
-Beginner level skills
-Can or knows someone who can create a bootable CD ot USB flash drive using one of the recommended programs
Friendly-Bionic32, like most of my remasters it is a work in progress. A friendlier Puppy for beginners. Hope you find it interesting or maybe it will provide ideas for others to make it even easier.
If you download the ISO be sure to read the next post to create a bootable CD/USB.

Minimum System Requirements: 32bit, single or dual core cpu, 512mb ram, only one internal drive (if installing to internal drive)
What you will need to make a bootable CD:
-A computer running MS Windows or some version of Linux, with a CD Writer drive.
-CD burning software, if you don't already have this, try one of these free programs
-----MS Windows - BurnCDCC*, (tested) available here https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downl ... -software/ *BurnCDCC - set speed slider to CD 4X
-----Linux - XFBurn, (tested) check your official repository
-A blank writable CD
What you will need to make a bootable USB:
-A computer running MS Windows or some version of Linux.
-USB installing software, try one of these free programs
-----MS Windows - Rufus, (tested) available here https://rufus.ie/en/
NOTE: Use Rufus v3.17 portable from here https://www.fosshub.com/Rufus-old.html
-----Linux MBR - Unetbootin, (tested) available here https://unetbootin.github.io/linux_download.html
-A blank USB, minimum 2gb (you should erase any existing files)
Unetbootin 702 was used in testing.
ALTERNATE PROGRAMS:
There are many other CD burning and USB installing programs, however, you will probably find they require more knowledge and more settings to use. Worse, some of them cannot produce a Puppy USB that can be booted on some computers. We highly recommend you use one of the tested programs for best results.

Hello.
Trying to burn this ISO image using Rufus 3.18, but get errors.
I'm trying to burn the 32-bit one.
I get a pop-up from Rufus, saying it needs to download some extra files, but when I click on YES(do it), it fails.
If I click on NO, the burn is cancelled.
Little help?
I have attached an image.

@Grogster
Yep, they broke rufus. Download v3.17 portable from here https://www.fosshub.com/Rufus-old.html and it will work. Thanks for finding this issue, I'll note it in the first post.

I might recommend Burn iso 2 cd, hasn't failed me in 7 years. The 'legacy' pup-installer ditto, needs isolinux 4.0.x (recommend 4.0.3 or 7). There's also FreeOffice-697_en at about 40Mb installed.
Small is good

Hello, I tried it and I liked it, it's good to have VLC already as default, especially for newcomers like me, who still don't know how to configure the system, Also having Firefox is easier for someone not so experienced.
I ran it on an hp mini 110, 1gb ram, atom n450 at 1.66ghz, when starting in live and frugal mode it took up 530mb of ram, playing in VLC at 480p only increased to 560mb, and when playing on youtube at 360p it went up to 800 mb of ram and the CPU at 100% . In full installation It start with 81 mb of ram, 120 playing with VLC at 480p and 500mb ram when watching video on youtube, with the CPU at 90%.
After I used it on an HPdv6 with 4gb ram and Phenom II X3 P820 cpu at 1.8ghz, obviously it flew, the resource consumption was the same as in the hpmini, it only increased a little when using 2 monitors, the one of the laptop and a screen at 1080p, which it recognized without a problem despite my ignorance in setting up both screens (I have to learn to use Puppy's tools for that ).
Just note 2 "details"
1-Firefox does not appear in the "Internet" menu, although this is its direct access on the desktop
2- When maximizing the windows, they only reach the dock, the upper shortcut bar, which is not a problem on a large monitor, but on small ones it does feel like it.
Thanks for the distro , I hope it helps more people to try Puppy.

#1 that is an oversight, will add to next release
#2 that is normal behavior, you can change by:
-click: Menu>Desktop>JWMdesk
-click: Tray-2 button (lower left)
-set: Above * Below = below
OR
-click: Autohide Standard radio button
-click: Apply
-click: Quit
You can make the same adjustments for Tray-1, the bottom tray.
Your translator is working very well.
Thanks

I was having a look around the Forum and ‘discovered’ Friendly-Bionic32 -
Downloaded and set it up on a USB stick -
It is quite a pleasant OS to use -
The latest version you have made available is RC3 -
I was wondering if at some point you would offer a Final version -
Or is RC3 the Final? -
Your version does have a few ‘niceties’ included -
As you can see from my Signature I am rather ‘into’ Bionic32 -
Best regards

@Chelsea80
Yes, there will be a version 1.0 released soon. I have been compiling the list of changes/additions and it will be implemented in the coming weeks. Bionic32 was really well done and made a great base for a 32bit remaster that can be used on older computers..
Thanks

Thank you for getting back to me with your intentions -
In your list of changes/additions -
Please can you keep Eject CD - ScreenSaver Control (in its present form) - VLC media player and Firefox -
I find each of these really useful -
Also, in Menu > Desktop > JWNdesk > Launch > Panel Buttons > Buttons : tray-2 can you please include 'Space' as an option -
The buttons in tray-2 on the desktop are rather too close for my eyes -
You are, of course, the governor and in the end you decide what's what, I respect that -
Just trying to give some input from a user who is using Friendly-Bionic32 rc3 more and more -
Look forward to Version 1.0 in the near future and thank you for the present re-master -
Best regards
Chelsea80

Would involve mucking around in someone else's code which I don't like to do. Try increasing the "short dimension" for tray 2 which will increase both the size and spacing of the icons.
Thanks

Did the 'short dimension' for tray-2 again, OK
Bit late now, but will carry on when more time available and will report back if I come across something worth letting you know about -
Gentle reminder, this will be from a users point of view so don't expect anything technical -
Glad you kept those "I find each of these really useful" -
Thank you for your hard work and bringing Friendly-Bionic32 v1.0 to the Forum -

You have found a flaw and one that has been in every Friendly-Bionic32 release . Fix this by:
Menu>Desktop>JWMdesk>Default Apps>Document>HTML viewer>palemoon>Apply
Luckily, the "HELP START HERE" files cover most of the same subjects and in greater detail.
Thanks for testing.

hello to all
I download it "friendly-bionic32-rc3.iso" and tested. it is good and fun.
I use puppy in past. I used XP-like_puppy 431_ENG.iso.
it is very good and suitable for me. because it as same as win xp or win 7 classic mode.
and it is very fast and very low size. only 145MB.
but it is old for me that use it. because I need new fire fox 115 and new player such as SMPlayer and pdf reader.
I only need this application for use in live OS.
and now, am I install puppy 431 in HDD then install my new AP then remaster it? in this mode I do not update kernel.
or in new file friendly-bionic32-rc3.iso I need this change: please see "Screenshot-my puppy test3.jpg"
1. top menu no need. I can not use AP in full screen mode.
2.update fire fox
3. Gnome player do not work. I test with more file MP4,MP3
I see in youtube puppy linux-bionicpup64 demo-640.mp4 and in right screen AP display CPU setting. it is good and useful.
4. add this AP
5. for play game I need wine and ePSXe playstation EMU for linux
6. FA keyboard (Persian) add in menu bar .
7. change back ground
please help me How I can build this customized puppy OS?

I think it might be time for me to up-date Firefox for security and patches etc.
Unless you do not think it is necessary.
Problem, I can't, due to this:

So if I do need to up-date, how to please?

Also, are thinking of bringing out a version 2 of Friendly-Bionic32?

Look in the help files, Firefox.
Also, are thinking of bringing out a version 2 of Friendly-Bionic32?
Won't do a v2 until there are enough significant changes to make.
