Hi BarryK,
I've got a problem with the x-server now also: after recompressing easy 3.3. Before that all went well, booted many times, no probs at all.

Since half an hour I'm fighting with xorgwizard, but don't get the x-server run. I know which server I need: (modesetting) 1600x900 nouveau driver.

Intel core i7, Nvidia GeForce 540M. ASUS Laptop.

(On this laptop I have easy buster running too, never had problems with that.)

So I think, the other reported *black screens* could maybe be a little bug, that was there in easy 3.3 already ....

Regards,
Berto

@BarryK If you would be kind enough to compile an experimental kernel EasyOS for me, I would definitely test it. Thank you

Hello Barry,

okay, I'll try to compile a custom kernel tonight, but I cannot promise. First, it is many years ago, that i've compiled kernels, but more important is that the described laptop is the best hardware I have (no desktop PC). It's 9:00am right now, cloudy but already 29 degrees C. Probably laptop will get too hot to finish.

However, I'll try at night. I've read your news post also, slowly I understand why some other distros still stick with 4.x kernels.(Antix for example uses 4.9, and only offers 5.16 optional).....

Regards
Berto

See my report:
https://bkhome.org/news/202202/kernel-51610-broken.html

Right now, compiling 5.15.16, which was released on Jan. 20, before the commits that have broken the kernel.

I am hoping that 5.15.16 will improve Ryzen CPU support, but Feodor sent me an email that mesa package should be 20.2 or greater -- Easy has mesa 20.0.2.

I suppose you could try reverting easy.sfs to the xz-compressed original file.

Let's see, the gzip recompressed easy.sfs should be at /mnt/wkg/sfs/easyos/oe/dunfell/easy_3.3_amd64.sfs, and the original should still be easy.sfs in the boot partition -- you can check sizes to confirm.

Copy the original easy.sfs to replace the bigger one.

Probably a bit difficult to do if cannot get X to run, so bootup some other distro.

I received an email from Duncan:

Re: Black screen on upgrade to 3.4
I found jwmrc-insert-icons and jwmrc-tray in /files.
When copied into the correct place I needed sunglasses.

That is very interesting, a very big clue.

At this stage, I have no idea how those two files could have ended up in the wrong place.
Also, I have updated 4 different installations, without any trouble.

The correct places are:
/root/.jwmrc-tray
/usr/local/ui/jwm/jwmrc-insert-icons

Hmmm, the initrd does a lot of checking when there is a version update, that's probably where it is going wrong. will check it out.

This is not making any sense to me. It just doesn't seem possible that those files could have ended up in /files folder.

For anyone experiencing problems with a Ryzen CPU, try this with 5.15.16 kernel:

https://bkhome.org/news/202202/temporar ... ernel.html

if it doesn't improve the situation, there are some configuration changes to the kernel that I can try.

Anyway, let me know how this one goes.

I'm compiling the 5.15.16 kernel again, guided by this:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/AMDGPU

Radeon driver disabled, extra options enabled for amdgpu driver.

Will do another Easy build with this kernel.

I did a fresh install of easy-3.4.1-k5.15.16-amd64.img.gz and had the screen go black at the same optical input line.

I'm about to try the newest version.

easy-3.4.1-k5.15.16-amdgpu-amd64.img.gz also goes to a black screen at the line that ends in "optical input"l

@hundido
Interesting lsmod in PopOS shows amdgpu kernel module is being used.

Would you mind doing one more thing. In PopOS, is there a file /proc/config.gz?
If so, could you attach it here?

I might see if can use their kernel config.

Also, could you do this and post the file amdgpu.tar.gz here:

# tar -c -f amdgpu.tar /lib/firmware/amdgpu
# gzip amdgpu.tar

And do this and post the file dmesg.txt here:

# dmesg > dmesg.txt

In PopOS, is there a file /proc/config.gz?

In /proc is hundreds of numbered folders. There's a bootconfig. Clicking on it brings up an empty read-only text file.

@pop-os:~$ cd /proc/config.gz
bash: cd: /proc/config.gz: No such file or directory

There's a file /proc/cpuinfo containing this:

I don't see /proc/config.gz, but hope something in that is useful.

Edit: amdgpu.tar.gz file says it's too large at 20 mb.

Edit: @BarryK is there another way I can get that to you?

@hundido
It is unfortunate that they haven't configured the kernel to have /proc/config.gz.
However, they do seem to have it elsewhere:

https://tutorialforlinux.com/2021/01/04 ... s-guide/3/

Under folder /boot

The above link has some weirdo code, but it seems there is a file somewhere under /boot, named something like config-<kernel version>

Find that, rename it with a fake ".gz" and post here thanks.

hello Misaligned and BarryK

i've been thinking about desktops with or without icons now much also, and found a solution in the old puppylinux forum: xlunch.

https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 003532&i=1
https://github.com/Tomas-M/xlunch
and http://xlunch.org/

the .pet from the forum works perfectly in easy buster 2.6.2 (see screenshots), but in dunfell the dependency libimlib2-dev is missing.
the launcher opens per mouseclick, and can be closed with right mouseclick. you can scroll through all installed apps (like in gnome
-hahaha) and return easily to your icon free desktop when you don't need the icons :-)

I thought this looked interesting. So I gave it a whirl in Easy Dunfell.

I already had compiled imlib2 as a dependency for feh (use that for a screensaver script)
Unfortunately I had compiled it without png functionality
Tried to compile it again with png functionality and ran into errors
Apparently they changed something after libpng14 that imlib2 doesn't like (Easy has libpng16)
So compiled libpng14
Then imlib2 compiled with png without any complaints.
Then installed the pet for xlunch listed above
Worked!.... somewhat
Many icons didn't show.
Apparently xlunch ONLY likes png files
So ran the regenerate entries script that xlunch comes with (converts the svg icons to png icons, which are more to xlunch's liking)
Still many missing icons
I looked.... and all this missing icons were .xpm files - which I guess the script above couldn't convert
Downloaded the appimage for Imagemagick and used it to convert the files manually.

Success!!! Works perfectly.

Just not sure what I am going to do with it now. Not sure it is useful. Interesting though.

@ hundido:

I didn´t compile a custom kernel, it doesn´t make sense, coz I cannot test it anyway. I "only" got intel hardware: Atom N450, i3 and i7 +nvidia in all 3 laptops. Furthermore I´ve looked up the amd website and others ... all 5.x kernels are supposed to work well with your card - https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... tjjxqGlcWg -, but amd has found issues in their linux drivers also, including "black screen": https://www.newsbreak.com/news/24055482 ... ux-systems

I forgot, what year your hardware was produced and which exactly, but there have been problems like you described before already. Sorry i dunno also how to help you ...

@BarryK: I have installed 3.3 again, after trying everything possible - even deleted the wkg directory. After complete new installation all was okay again, BUT I think I can locate the problem now - not exactly, but approximately: After changing touchpad settings on ASUS Pro7BS / i7/ Nvidia Geforce GT540M - I restarted X-server out of the running system. It quit X, but couldn´t restart X again, even after reboot not.

Berto

Yes, same experience here ... but I didnt come to the idea to use an appimage as installation of imagemagick failed. I tried to compile librsvg, imlib, libmenu-cache, but sooo many dependencies, I gave up somewhen when it came to rust. Every dependent package has 3 more dependencies, somewhen you dunno anymore on which level you are now *lol*

So I decided to make it quick-and-dirty: copied the .png files generated in buster to dunfell, additionally copied the .dsv file, and it is running ... only too many programs that don´t exist in dunfell - had to delete the entries manually....

Btw. As this version of xlunch doesn´t support transparent desktops, I just copied and renamed my desktop wallpaper to xlunch.jpg and put it in folder /usr/share/wallpapers. So the background is looking transparent ... hahaha

I like that idea to make the wallpaper look transparent! I made that change too.
Next I went to usr/local/bin/xluncher1 and removed the --dontquit option.
Then I mapped the menu button in the JWM tray to xluncher1
(modify the menu line in .jwmrc-tray to <TrayButton popup="Menu" icon="apps24.png">exec:xluncher1</TrayButton>)

Now the menu button in the JWM tray brings up xlunch, which looks transparent and also disappears after selecting an app. Looks fairly similar overall now to the launcher on Gnome desktops.
