Google Translate problems - user feedback required (SOLVED)

Post by amethyst »

The translation of Documents does not seem to work for me anymore. The file formats accepted have been reduced. Now, when I upload a .docx file (this should be accepted) for translation, it uploads, time passes for the "translation" and the "translated" file can then be downloaded. Only problem is that the translation has not been done. If you open the "translated" document, it's the same as the original. So, I would like someone to double-check this for me and see if you encounter the same problem. Here is the translate page: https://translate.google.com/
Click the Documents tab at the top and upload a reasonably sized (say about 300kb) supported file. Please report your results.

Tried with a 60Kb file (sorry nothing bigger available at the mo...) and it translated from english to French without problems - except that it changed part of an email address so that the spelling was wrong. (I would expect that it should spot an email address and leave it unchanged).

Thanks for the tip - I didn't realise it was capable of translating an entire document. Rather handy.

Thanks. What file format did you use > did you use the documents function and uploaded the file > what exactly happened during the translation process (did it stay on the same page and could you see the actual translation taking place) > which browser did you use. Cheers.

@amethyst

I use google translate on a daily basis. Mainly Russian to English, but also in the reverse direction.
My process is simple. Copy a complete document (UTF-8 text format) into Geany. After that I copy every paragraph from Geany into the google translator and then copy the translation back to the file in Geany. I proceed on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis to the end of the document.

I believe you are interested in translating a document by submitting the entire file as a single document.
Beyond that your document is not in UTF-8, but docx format. Here I report my experience using a docx file, found on my PC.
This file was generated/saved using Libre-Office.

I successfully translated a docx file using the following method.
(1) From 'Russian News Today' I copied an article and pasted this (ctrl+C then ctrl+V) into Libre-Office.
(2) I saved that file in docx format to RAM1.
(3) I opened the google translator and selected the 'document' tab.
(4) I submitted the file from RAM1 to the google translator.
(5) I cannot remember how I knew the translation process was complete but I found an English translation in /home/spot/Downloads. It had the name of the original file I submitted, with (1) appened. You can see this below.

And so - ladies and gentlemen! For you entertainment I submit the translated document I found in spot/Downloads.
Life is good. Google loves me. All is well in the world!
All the best from Australia!

Mainly Russian to English

Hello. I've been forgetting to ask you for a long time, why did you choose a Russian word for your nickname :) ?

It seems you are translating texts about finance. It is better not to believe that the ruble has strengthened. Unless of course you are a currency speculator :) I use rubles, but I have no choice.

Fossapup OS, Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, 64 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB, Sound Blaster Audigy Rx with amplifier + Yamaha speakers for loud sound, USB Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro V3 + headphones for quiet sound.

Thanks for the feedback. The problem is browser related. It either does not work with Palemoon or my version of Palemoon is too old. It works for me in Firefox and Chromium. Marked as solved.

@amethyst

I confirm your observation.
While I can (I mean google will) translate Russian documents with a docx format using Chromium the process fails when I use Light. However, using Light Russian language (Cyrillic) text pasted in UTF-8 encoding is translated into English
