How to use hplip3.19.6.run in Xenial64?

I downloaded a copy of this version of hplip expecting the .run extension would allow it to run straight away in xenial64. Not so, what additional processing does this file require or are there missing library needed to be able to load? Thanks in anticipation.

Usually the .run packages are the source code and compile files needed to compile and install whatever is in it.

You need to provide these other things to do that.
Xenialpup devx SFS
Xenialpup kernel source SFS
These provide the needed files to compile.

Quickpet icon on desktop
Look in Quickpet->Useful
Click on:
devx
kernel src
That should download and install them.

Then follow this install procedure:

This is info on installing a different hiplip version, but the procedure is the same for any version.

Kernel sources are gratefully not required to build HP's printing utilities and drivers. However it can be absurdly slow to run the .run from experience (I suspect it uses python). And devx is certainly required, alongside some additional packages not covered by devx. HPLIP.run will tell you if so, after a turtle's pace to the finish line!

As well, in some cases (my own) HPLIP build process might end up improperly using/handling python and behave strangely. (python module missing and therefore nothing actually works) In this case you will need to download the actual source and run ./configure PYTHON=/usr/bin/topython2

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you bigpup,
We have had storms in the NE of Scotland which have been very distracting. Having had a look at quickpet under devx and kernel src there are numerous options to download, which one(s) do I need to choose?. I'm not too much up on the techy side of puppy, I'm much more at the user end of the spectrum. Thanks

You go to the Useful tab, and select devx. It should provide a list of addresses to download from. Then use sfs-load and load in the devx if it doesn't load itself for you.
