Ars Technica Bug Report

Post by Sky Aisling »

Hello,
Saw this article in Ars Technica:

A bug lurking for 12 years gives attackers root on most major Linux distros

https://arstechnica.com/information-tec ... -distro%2F

I've been running Puppies for 12 years as 'root' without any issues. Anyone else have issues?

Sky

Nothing yet!

But if a hack does get done.
How would you really know it?

How is this any different using sudo or su?

major distros such as Ubuntu allow the first user account to bump up to root just by prefixing commands with "sudo" or "su", without requiring root password,
which makes the whole protection mechanism a joke.
Considering that most Ubuntu users are using this first login account as their regular login.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

The chmod is the easiest solution for most. Thanks for posting.
