Puppy Linux Discussion Forum

Since 2001 (that was the year when I got MS Windows first at all ) I wanted to switch to Linux. To date, this is a deterrent. In 2018 I got to know Puppy Linux, and thanks Pendrivelinux I managed to get it to work. That was a very important experience. For some time I worked intensively with Puppy Linux. Tried to do everything with it. Unfortunately, there are some services that can not be connected to Puppy Linux, so I returned to Windows. But Microsoft is getting bolder and bolder. They force you to drop your pants more and more. I want to get away from this oligarch. Unfortunately, it won't work completely.

Finally I thought that only one of the big distributions can replace Windows. Now I just had a frustrating weekend with Debian Live. Persistence? Maybe for the geeks. But I am a simple user.

That's why I remembered my Slacko, opened up my old IdeaPad 10-2 (Slacko is on a 8-GB-SDCard), and everything is running splendidly again. This is how it has to be.

Logged into my forum account and got the impression that Puppy Linux has fallen into a slumber. Until I realized that John Murga was taken from life early. I am very sad about that.

A note to that in the old forum would have been helpful.

I found out today that Slacko 7.0 is freshly released

So my love for Puppy Linux has been rekindled. Where else can you find that - speed, portability, and encryption? And reliability.

Only I wonder if Slackware itself is still among the living.

Personally, I have all of these ISO files loaded on a folder of a single USB (yes, only 1 USB for all of them). I boot the ISO files directly to the PC desktop without ever needing to do anything more than merely, initially downloading the ISO file(s) onto the USB, and booting directly from the ISO file. Booting the ISO file directly gives ALL the same functionality as all PUPs without typical hassles. There is NO learning curve because nothing in Puppy operations change.

Thank you for your rich responses. It is moving to be in a community immediately like in a family. I forgot to mention that I am running under 32 bit. I think the IdeaPad S 10-2 is cute. But if I really want to get away from Windows, I'll have to go to 64 bit and keep up my Linux. Hardware ages rather slowly, but arrogant messages like "Your browser is out of date" or YouTube telling me that the video I paid for can't be played compel me to give up my nostalgia and keep my Linux up to date. Thanks for the recommendations. I have to go to 64 bit. I am preparing a 32 MB stick with YUMI now.

This is a great satisfaction: Under Windows preparing to boot Linux.

One of my other devices is a Panasonic Toughbook CF-C2, 64 Bit. Hope it will boot Puppy Linux.

I am very happy to read that. When there has been no new version for more than five years, it is very unsettling for an inexperienced user like me. Raises the question: Should I still do anything with Slackware? Wikipedia now is probably the wrong source of information. I've looked there for many times, and there has never been a glimmer of hope.

I'm looking forward to version 15. It goes on. The oldest active Linux distribution. Olé! Yii-haa!

The better way is to test different distributions to find the distro for your requirements.
You are right Slackware is the oldest distribution.
I like Slackware very much this is no secret and I am waiting for version 15 too.
Nevertheless you should test different distros for comparison.

I just recently discovered Ventoy. Very easy, once you got your usb stick prepared, you have two partitions on it.
One boot partition, and one partition to hold your isos.
On reboot you will be automatically presented with a menu that gives you the choice to boot into either iso you
have copied on there. Simple.

I (76 y. old French man from the country of Paris, not Strasbourg or Mulhouse, so typical "Bildungsausländer") is your first message absolutely fun:

Germany did interchange 40 years ago Latin through English and make within only a few years since this time English obligatory a long time in the German kindergarten. After the 4 first school years, the usual German schools make English obligatory in her school system (I did have a great dispute with the school autority because of my own children in NRW to avoid that as French and Latin was for me more important with good reason: my children did speak fluent English and didn't need some learning more in that language as they did go 4 years to the English kindergarten from our English military quarter in Germany and did learn there correct English like other (English) children (for that, I did sacrifice their French language education as it is better to learn French in a real school an not only at home. But I did not know that "liberty" is in Germany a absolute foreign word...)). Over that, the German state offer in their "Gymnasien", the main form of education for people in the school years between 5 and 13, a lot of "ALL IN ENGLISH" branches (excepted German and mathematical knowledge (I think), 9 long years , and also after this time, recommends in the German high schools to publish in English. So far: Germany is / should be a full bi language country as Ireland, Canada etc...

But you, you continue to have to excuse you for your poor English exactly as I (I did NEVER learn English (Latin, German, old Greek and later Russian ...)

And, as I am knowing that (you are one of millions poor German having that problem, I did publish here a link in the German subdivision of that forum how to build YOUR «Puppy like system», exactly as you really need, with a «regular Linux distrobution» respecting all the rules of Unix / Linux and free extensible with thousands of regular Debian / Devuan packages.

It is not rebellion against Puppy or BK (I am since 1903 a great fan of BK and did never quit the community else / though certain great deceptions) but after the dead of our main community spender and his old forum, the result is only BK itself did begin again to publish new Puppy's as EasyPup and certain "hobby coders" like Josejp2424 (excuse me, it is exactly so), hobby coders being absolutely not accept by the men of the community having received number of years ago from BK the keys and rights and permissions to continue his work at Puppy instead of himself!

This men block actually each competitor coder (it is new: It was always so except one, MU, our old German moderator in the first years of Puppy: he was probably the only one hobby coder at Puppy having retired himself only to continue differently his live as he was a very, very young man and did need a more exciting way!).

The consumption from hobby coder at Puppy was always murderous...

Puppy did reach in the last 5 years sizes being to see so:

- without *.devx is Puppy absolutely not comparable with Linux. It is not more Linux as some Android or Apple OS! The actual *.devx files of Puppy make between 200 and 300 MB extremely compacted! This stuff comes OVER each Puppy stuff to make it a Linux with comparable capacities with other Linux installations (though it continues don't to respect the rules of Linux / Unix).

- the new actual versions of Puppy have a size of about 450 .. 550 MB in ONLY stable level (as you rarely have Puppy's from real rolling distributions: they would be more big, each new release increase the size of Linux!), also after maximal squatshing

But, excuse me, that is the size of a normal Linux !

For which extra profit?

"My" (it is not my: each one can do the same, more, did always have the possibility to do that or more) proposition for you German puppyist is at viewtopic.php?p=46776#p46776 . With a bit more time, I can make better if I don't use the Debian installer at all but start directly with "debootstrap " and strip / clean the system from a lot of localisation's files, where the languages files are the most.

But:

The ISO I did build so can after squatshing be started directly in EACH language (yes, including German!) without to need to be translate extra by users, and integrated extra by adding some extra package (over the size of the Puppy itself, an over the size of it's devx,sfs , where the result with package is never a complete translation !)...

The problem of Puppy has a name:

WOOF

the Puppy builder: the size grows and grows and grows without limit!

Here in Germany, we have specialists in buiild (on German: Bau) and woof ...

It was (VERY) different with the old ISO's made step by step by BK: The ALL iso from Quirky April (64 bit!) did have a complete size under 100 MB without browser and continues today to start the RECENT browser package from Brave browser offered by josejp2424 on his site for BusterPup64 (with an exceptionaly reach depository of other packages, a lot workiung well in April 64!).

I will try in the next time to use refractasnapshot also with April 64 (as no remasterisation's package is offered)...

A starting motor based on Linux 64 with only 100 MB for a lot of very actual software from a BusterPup or DevuanPup depository, hm... )

I now installed Quickpup64 on a 32-GB-Stick. Using YUMI. After I stopped the intrusiveness of MS Windows during booting, by means of BIOS, a really snappy operating system started. I thank you for the recommendation and I hope my enthusiasm will continue. Here is the hardware used again: It's a Panasonic Toughbook CF-C2.

But as I feared, YouTube does not play the videos I purchased.

Up to now, everything else is fine. I am impressed how quick it is. That is what i wanted. Because MS Windows gets slower and slower. Hardware doesn't get slower. A cumbersome operating system sucks more and more and makes everything slower.
