Trying to install a foreign font

Post by Treya »

So, I'm on fossapup64 and I'm trying to find a way to install Japanese font (ideally typeset too but I'm mostly interested in just viewing the font). When I stumbled upon an old thread answering the question, the contained link was dead.

Is there no way to install via terminal? If not, what would be the manual solution?

@Treya Perhaps @MochiMoppel can help you! I think he's familiar with installing Japanese fonts into Puppy Linux

Which thread and which link?
The newest thread from 1 month ago, answering your question:
display utf-8 in browser: Japanese characters?

@rockedge
The forum search didn't find above thread. Also not this recent thread when searching with keyword "characters".

@MochiMoppel I don't totally understand yet why the built in search is so problematic. Especially on the old forum, it has crashed the system with database tables overflowing the max limits. I am continually adjusting the search features to find the right balance.

BUT what does work well and finds topics and posts throughout both forums is the customized search engines:
https://psearch.puppylinux.com or https://rockedge.org/psearch

Yeah, it seems the search function isn't working very well.

I downloaded the font I want and know the directory, but I'm not sure how to transfer the file to the corresponding folder. The normal right click, cut + paste I do doesn't work.

Maybe puppy really dislikes when I download from chrome, it always is very finicky when I try to install from there. I think it's because it puts it in the restrictive folder. Any way to prevent that, asides from using the pre-installed browser?

EDIT: I did the alternate browser method, but it'd be nice to know how to bypass restrictions. (I'm sorry, pale moon is too dated)

Unfortunately does not work with my default browser (Opera12). No input box.
Of course works with Pale Moon, but there I can't use my Opera bookmarks.
A link to your search page in the "Links" dropdown box would help.

@rockedge Puppy Search works again. Thank you! :thumbup2:

Results are so much better than Psearch. Keyword "Japanese" in Psearch: 182 hits (Unrelated Google ads probably included in this figure). Hits with Puppy search:1695.
Psearch seems to ignore older posts.
