Syndownload - Drag'n'Drop downloader

Post by Keef »

syndownload is one of three utilities that were made for an abandoned desktop project - 'Project Elevate'
http://elevate.sourceforge.net/index.html

Source code: https://sourceforge.net/projects/elevate/files/
syndownload is included in syndesis-0.3.1

https://sourceforge.net/projects/elevat ... .3.1/

I have attached two AppDirs - one with a 64bit binary, and the other is 32bit.
You can actually drag'n'drop to the syndownload binary, and that works on it's own, as long as the URL has nothing after the filename).
However, to deal with some URLs that have /download on then, I have included a wrapper script.
This is a recycled version of fredx181's yt-dnd script.

Click on the directory and an icon appears in the top left corner. Drag and drop a URL on to it, and syndownload will start up, giving you a graphical indication (as well as the numbers - % and file size) of the download. Best used on large files, obviously. When the download is finished, close the window, and then rox will open up to show the file location. Defaults to /root but you can edit the script to change that (or the file manager).
Press 'Esc' over the icon to close it.
As I said, you can just use the binary on its own, which is fine in most cases.
I tried to a screenshot, but it won't show up.

@Keef I installed Syndownload into KLV-Airedale-alpha6 and it is working well. Pretty cool so far, I set the download directory for /root/Downloads

Nice one, Keef!

(Though I confess to being just a wee bit disturbed by summat of this nature. You do realize items like this push us ever closer to being considered a usable, "mainstream" distro of all things, don'tcha?)

Heaven forbid..... :o

Mike. ;)

Just a little update that I should have thought of earlier - you can add right-click options to an AppDir by including an AppInfo.xml file. This can give you a choice of download locations. You will still have to edit it manually to suit. Also needs some additions to the AppRun file (or the file it is a symlink for). It is safe to rename syndownload-launcher to AppRun, It was just easier to have a distinctive name while editing.

See attached examples.

@Keef Now I have to do an alpha8! I've added Syndownload to KLV-Airedale as a built in feature. So I'll need to add these slight modifications to round off the functionality.

So far working very nicely and makes a nice useful addition to the operating system.

Now I found it it was quite easy to add a file selector using Yad. This gives another right-click option to select the download location.
