Which printer/scanner will work with Puppy?

Post by bigphil »

Is there any way I can find out the Puppy Linux compatibility with an all in one printer/scanner?
The reason I ask is that my current printer is permanently dead hence I need to purchase a replacement.
When I bought my current printer/scanner in was in the Xenial days or maybe even earlier.
Unfortunately Cups and Xsane didn't recognize it hence I had to boot into Windoze to print/scan. It was only recognized when Fossa. came along.

I could buy a 'refurbished' old model from fleabay but I don't get warm feelings about that and also they are not much cheaper than a new one.

I don't know if Wine is clever enough to load the software and drivers supplied with the printer but even if it does I will have link all print related stuff to it.

Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Phil

It was only recognized when Fossa. came along.

If the broken printer/scanner worked in Fossapup64 9.5
Seems to me, a new one made by that same company, would work OK.
Usually, any issues with printers, is just a matter of figuring out what driver is needed, that may not already be in the Puppy version.

Most of the printer manufactures, are now providing good Linux driver packages, you can get from their website support.
That was not so true a few years ago.

Avoid HP , they are not on Linus's side.

My cheapie Canons always work . I'm on xenialpup64-7.5 .I use a Canon MG2560 and it scans copies and prints single page only .$30 on back to school special.

I bought a red Canon_MG3600_series that printed both sides but the scanner did not work so I returned it. Cost about $75 AUD

The Australian State Governments have all enacted laws to steal your assets on your death. All legal paperwork is binned and all assets seized on one disgruntled child's complaint.Move them well before you die or go into a home.

@bigphil :-

I've always used Epsons. Dating all the way back to the mid-80s. Never had any real issues with 'em that I can think of.

For a long time they were somewhat "agricultural" in operation, perhaps, compared to many others - though not so true any more - but they just keep on chugging away forever. And everybody & his dog do consumables for them; you can often pick up cartridges, etc., in many supermarkets...

Mike. ;)

My last 3 printers over 15 yrs have been HP. Have worked flawlessly.

@April I also have a CANON MG2560 printer. Using Tahr 6.0.5 in the computer working as a print server which is also providing Apple's AIRPRINT capabilities. The scanner program comes from Canon and works well, with print server as CUPS and the airprint coming through Avahi configuration.

This way Android and iPhones can print directly to the Canon MG2500.

Also have an HP F4500 WiFi network printer that works really well once the correct HP libs were installed. This one will not scan via the tools in Puppy Linux via network.

My Canon printer/scanner Isensys MF3220 does not work, need Windows. I think later models have a one-fits-all generic linux driver. Haven't tested it though.

The original topic poster has left the building.

Any new post are us talking to each other.

Best advice I can give.
Before buying a new printer/scanner.
Look up the model on the manufactures support web site.
See if they offer a Linux driver for it.
If they do.
It should be able to get it working in Puppy, using their Linux driver.
