Virtual Reality & 'META'

Post by 8Geee »

So it seems that facebook has a 'rebranding' that puts virtual-reality up front and good ol' fb behind.

If you are not interested in VR or meta, one should check the browser so that these things do not access the browser.
Since I'm Firefox oriented, I'll start with it (should also work with clones). Given fb's history, this might be a good idea.

In about config accept the risk and search for these two terms
oculus
vr

False ALL options.

Oh, I have a lot of thoughts about virtual reality. I have even more thoughts about the "digitalization of the economy and population" being promoted in all countries. But since these thoughts consist mainly of selected Russian obscenities... then I probably will refrain.

As for the name change. Facebook, Meta...

Do these config options concern non-farcebook users?

Yes they do. The squid that is much of the largest companies (google, amazon, facebook and others) might want to check for VR or mataverse-ware. Or even access it. As I wrote, if you are not interested in VR or the metaverse, its a good idea to remove browser access.

In Polish slang meta means a place where you can buy illegal alcohol or shortcut to Metamfetamina (eng. Methamphetamine).

LOL. There is even Polish legal shop with alcohol on FB:

In Russian it will be "met" (he) :)
Slavic youth should only consume Vodka (Bimber?!) :) No, give them all sorts of mescalines-methamphetamines now.

In LibreWolf those same last two as in Sea-Monkey were set to true. I set them both to false. How is this checked in Ungoogled Chromium? These are the only two I use with an ocassional Palemoon.

They now read:
dom.vr.poseprediction.enabled false
dom.vr.require-gesture false

but I also changed this one:
dom.vr.oculus.invisible.enabled false

Today my brain is "blown up" by the news :)
viewtopic.php?p=41549#p41549
That's not all. He said that it is necessary to ensure (the state will do this) not only the cybersecurity of the person himself, but also his virtual double, an avatar, who will be inside the emerging metaverses. And people will be able to be close to other people who live on other continents.

I almost bled from my ears, I was laughing so hard :)

Even the word "virtual reality" itself is an oxymoron.
Something which is "virtual" is never "real".
I think that summarises everything.

That`s correct.

Something which is "virtual" is never "real".

That`s correct too.......to a certain Degree.
BUT........But it could be conceived as "real/true".........and can somehow even materialize.... can become "Reality".....to a certain Degree.

Virtual Realities=(Multi)Sensory Hallucinations/Illusions ----- produced electronically (Tv-Hollywood,World-Wide-Web,Video Games) or via Neuro-Chemicals (Hallucinogenic Drugs) ...... ----also via collective Mass-Hysteria,Mass-Media-Propaganda,Mass-Hypnosis..... or Things like this.... can create "Virtual" fake Illusionary Realities.

It is hard to wake up from this kind of Trances/Dreams.
What happens if we do?......Lucid Dreaming?

How real is what we conceive as Reality?
How much can we trust our Senses?
Is there a Way to escape the Spider Web of Falsehood and Illusion?

Is there anything like Visions that are truly enlightened?

.......i have to admit.......i have no Answer.

Yes it's right there, amazing how familiar screen options can be ignored after awhile.

An update to the old postings here...

It seems that the Oculus (by FB/META) Quest 2 does not have any parental controls. Considering FB/META and "whats out there" I wasn't surprised. But many people are going to have a rude surprise. I wonder how many will be returned as dissatisfied with product.

In 1974, IBM introduced the 1st virtual product for commercial use on their mainframes. It was a product that allows an entity to create a virtual mainframe, aka Virtual Machine (VM) on the bare-metal mainframe. This elemental start has given way to VMs, not only on mainframes, but on minis and micro "frames" as well.

Today in the PC world we know these frames as Ven, Virtualbox, Parallel, KVM, QEMU, etc. all of which allow the bare-metal machine or PC to create VMs which emulate "real-world" machines.

Almost 10 years ago at a local university in a senior-level+grad-level class, I introduced Second-Life as a means for a presentation project. Student reactions were positive.

FB is merely commercializing this as a product AND like it was in 1974, people struggled with any understanding of what a 'virtual ...' is and how to use it for benefit.

I dont expect this community to be any different than the business climate of the late 1970s & 1980s; cautious in 'wonderment' of what is a Virtual World, aka Metaverse. Afterall, we, like them, are merely humans, too. Yet, I am sure that the students of a decade ago who used 2nd-life know full well how it can be useful.

Like it or not, laughter or not, it WILL advance as more and more developers will create and structure these metaverses going into the future. We might see a "TikTok" type of metaverses spring up and become popular before too long. And others, as well, for all sorts of disciplines, existing virtually, too. Thus, a metaverse is merely a virtual world existing in our bare-metal real world.

Just a view to consider, even if its a right or wrong view...it will move forward.

Look for ways to take advantage that might be useful or helpful to humanity.

I see it as isolation. More non-human contact, more reality blurring. Young people should NOT be allowed to use any of this, period, full stop. Parental controls are a must.
