Fatdog64-812 Final was released on 9 November 2021.

The Fatdog team is pleased to release Fatdog 812 Final.

This release improved on the 812 RC and includes several bug fixes as identified by the feedback we receive from early adopters in this thread, and also comes with minor new features. All Fatdog 811 users are recommended to upgrade to this release where possible as it contains important fixes.

Special note for 812 RC users: We don't normally recommend that you carry over your savefile/savedir from earlier Fatdogs, but if you are 812RC, you can safely re-use your existing savefile/savedir, since the changes between the two are minimal.

Mini-FAQ regarding this release.

1. Why did we choose to go with LibreOffice 6.3 when we could have built LO 7.1?

Libre Office 6.3.6.2 is the last version that supports GTK2 and although LO supports also GTK3, X11 and QT5 UI frontends, the second is not really pleasing aesthetically and the third is very buggy.
We decided to not include GTK3 out of the box yet, but even if we did, the GTK3 UI is also noticeably slower than GTK2 one, so 6.3.6.2 seems to be a reasonable compromise, at least for the time being.
If you really want/need the latest libreoffice, check the "Third Party Installer" from Control Panel, and choose "Update Libreoffice". Remember to install gtk3 from gslapt or it won't run.

2. Why did we choose Mesa to 20.3.5 instead of 21.2.1?

Versions newer than 21.0.3 contain a significant performance regression that hits some older Radeon HD cards (GFX6-7). The regression was reported and fixed.
We went with 20.3.5 instead of 21.0.3, because of the smaller size and no noticeable difference in performance between them.

3. Why do we stay with 5.4.152 instead of 5.10 or newer kernels?

We tried 5.10.63, but it turned out that:
- on some machines it runs noticeably hotter and the CPU usage is higher,
- on another machine grub4dos is unable to find fd64.sfs and the keyboard doesn't work at Bulldog prompt.

4. My Alt-F3 key no longer works! It was supposed to launch Findnrun! Do you get rid of this hugely popular and useful software?

Of course not. It's still there, except that it is now accessible by pressing Win+S. Re-mapping it to Win+S serves dual purpose:
- Freeing Alt+F3 for application-defined shortcut key, and
- Findnrun is similar in functionality to what Win+S does in Windows, so it helps those who come from the world of windows.

5. How can I display the same background image for the Xorg splash screen and my Desktop wallpaper?

The Xorg splash screen is displayed briefly when Xorg starts and before ROX-Filer can draw your Desktop.

To change the default Xorg background create the following symbolic link in your Fatdog state directory targeting the desired image file, e.g.: /root/.fatdog/xinitrc-splash => /root/Pictures/my-background.jpg

Alternatively, to set the Xorg splash background from your last Desktop wallpaper enable executable permission for file /etc/profile.d/sync_xorg_splash_from_rox_backdrop.sh (set it and forget it).

6. My old ACER laptop can't boot with syslinux and small initrd. Why?

This has been reported on an ACER AO 722 under a very specific configuration only. Try changing the resolution in the Syslinux config file ("menu resolution 800 600") to "640 480" or "1024 768". Let us know if it helps.

@spiritwild: Ok, so wget works. And sfsmanager still doesn't or does now?
If it doesn't, is it also the case without a savefile/folder?
You can also run it from CLI using sfsmanager command and see if there are any errors or other suspicious messages.

This is an observation, not a complaint: I state this so that it is not misunderstood.

FATDOG (FD) is a premier distro and not just that its 1st in Puppyland, but is very advanced in what it has produced in the forum.

FD has address Secure-Boot several years ago, yet this thread highlights a problem. Its NOT a FD problem with its operations. It the 'Opening Post" information for FATDOG that can avert the issue that the new member (and others people unfamiliar) run into; namely Secure Boot Registration.

I offer an idea: Could future Opening Posts for each new FD have a "brief" explaining registration so that new people pulling it for the 1st time, will see the simple Secure Boot registration suggestion or reference?

If this is a reasonable idea, I sure we'll see it.

Thank you, reproduced now. I've been using a different ISO (WIP), not the RC one.

Obviously it will fix itself with the release of 812 Final, but, just in case, I also fixed it in sfsmanager (and a few other scripts), so versions like '820alpha3' won't break it again in the future.

LOL We use tachyon wave over subspace to bring you the latest news from the Inner Worlds; and it is well known than tachyon is very sensitive to calibration errors. A little misalignment could end up with problems like this. I guess we should count ourselves lucky that it's only a day early instead of a month early - that would be trouble, people would be asking us for releases that we haven't even contemplated yet

A more down-to-Earth reason is that, living near the international dateline does have its perks.

I noticed during first install of fatdog64...

When Google-Chrome browser is run for first time there is a warning message that
gtk3 is not installed . This happens when machine is not connected to internet.
Everything goes well if connected to internet.

I suggest that warning message should be different.
When selecting Google-Chrome browser for first time...

Another possible request .....

I noticed that neither mount-FULL or mount.cfs is installed.
In previous versions of puppy I was using these commands to connect to Samba servers

Hooray Edgar/Reks owners. Not sure if it's the kernel or not, I've had 5.13 installed on 20.04 before, but I had already done the hacky method of braswell sound.

its the kernel with SOF and SOF firmware. Works OOTB on Manjaro 21.x.x as well

I researched SOF and I found that it's an open source project for helping the development of audio drivers

HDD based multi-session saving setup, with my container script dropped into /root and that all ran great with minimal changes required Since 810 I've been refining that and it was nice to have pretty much everything all preconfigured/set to how I like.

I load fd64.sfs into ram at bootup, so the container runs using the aufs copy of that, so no HDD's need to be mounted in order to load/run the container

Hi James. More a case of I don't load/run any Pup's nowadays, GUI wise Fatdog is my primary system that runs/works great for me So still visit relatively regularly, mostly just lurking.

Pretty much run all online GUI activities in that container, root in name only (more like a heavily restricted userid), close one container to open another and its back to as though a clean/fresh install that just takes a second to 'boot' (reload). Secure and great enough to install a state of Zen (ultimate inner peace )

Thanks again to you and all the Fatdog team for facilitating such inner calm without which (alternatives) induce so much more stresses.

I saw your post of advancements with QT+, GTK+ (3/4) and Wayland. Very interesting as the technology needle continues advancing and forum PUPs continue as well to ensure operations on the hardware-chipsets-firmware we need and use today. THANK YOU ALL for what you do for us. And BEST WISHES this Holiday season to ALL, here.

I am curious for 2 reasons; neither of which I am currently seasoned person in, yet in 2022 I am hopeful to become much more seasoned. My curiousity surrounds something I saw in 2020 about 'Blender'. I know FD has provided AVIDEMUX for good reason in the past. It does a good job in minor video needs.

Blender has come along rocketing out of the 2D to 3D to Anime to Video-audio editing in a single package while being a good performer in the reports seen here and here. This shows that a single package can serve a wide-variety of motion video functions in a single package rather than having to jump around into multiple packages in attempts to meet a multimedia objective for, say, a presentation.

In 64bit systems, the big thing for me is not a package size, rather its the system's performance (RAM,CPU, IO-subsystem) as well as 'user' productivity since that allows less time on the system to meet our needs. And since I have a cheap new TV coming to replace the final VGA monitor that the PC's graphic card can better support with built-in audio-video signaling, I have a question that I am sure can be answered for use in the current and the upcoming FATDOG: Will the Wayland changes benefit this configuration with Blender as a offering?

Yes, that question does seem a little vague, BUT, I look forward to an encounter that would provide the best outcome in system's use/experience.

My PC configuration is as minimal as possible for multimedia use; namely 3 wires, max, to the PC

power
HDMI
Ethernet (optional)

Compare this to our past when dial-up was a thing...and all the wires...and the physical debugging at times.

The progress made in the 3 decades of Linux is unconscionable!

Any advice would me muchly appreciated.

You can install Blender from Fatdog repo. We have made it available since 710 days. It's the re-packaged official binary from Blender website. It's updated from time to time, but if you need the latest and greatest (before we have the chance to update it) you can always download from Blender's own website. They're the one and the same.

1. Changing from VGA to HDMI is absolutely orthogonal to changing from Xorg to Wayland. In other words, ZERO benefit.

2. I'm sorry to pour down cold water on your enthusiasm; but we are not going the the wayland way; at least, not for the foreseeable future. We value real productivity over industry trends.

You can install Blender from Fatdog repo.

If you have an extremely old PC like a Pentium II you are limited to an early version of opengl
and that means that more recent versions of blender won't work. Blender 2.64 is the limit in that situation.
