I had changed file name to : "textmaker.sfs". And then I got the error message also.

Changing the sfs name should be fine as long as the sfs is not currently loaded (not a good idea with .pets but i believe it's fine with .sfs) - but in such a case I think it is important to remove the /root/SoftMaker directory if present (as i assume it would contain some path info from previous runs). Similar if the sfs is relocated - remove the SoftMaker directory would be my advice.
Thanks for testing!

Definitely not a good idea to re-name built packages unless you have a very good reason.

From my experience .pets definitely don't like it, because the exterior 'name' then doesn't match up with the internal 'pet-specs' file inside, which goes into the PPM's 'database'. (That's not strictly "how it happens", I know, but it's how I think of it.)

It's not something I've ever tried with an SFS.

AppImages, on the other hand, can be re-named to anything you want, and this can be carried out as many times as you like....clicking on the outer 'shell' merely transfers the executable action to the 'AppRun' file one layer in. This is what actually starts everything rolling....

Mike. ;)

About 5 yrs ago I uploaded a compact en_US version of FO 2012 (vers. 697). All three parts are shrunk to a 18Mb zip file. The secrect to GG's download is to register and then include the dot softmaker folder (belongs in root) in the package. The stripped down versions to a single language are VERY small (mine abt 39Mb inflated... thats all three functions). The user manual is pdf and will not compress much at all... one might keep it as a separate D/L.

I prefer to use
4) A "supernanobarebone" version containing the only 3 files (= 23MB) Textmaker requires to start:
textmaker
textmaker.iwr
textmaker_us.dwr

Clever idea. Here is a trial pet and sfs using that idea (and incorporating a menu entry). Seems to have a clear user interface (at least with the basic fonts already in my current system) and after minimal testing seems to be fine. I don't know if there will be any downstream issues but it will be very handy if this supernano idea proves reliable.
Thanks MM!

Hi greengeek,
Just tried the .sfs version of the above with Dpup Stretch. It opened and did not immediately demand registration or a product key. I did not make changes to anything in the pop-up boxes. I started a "test" document which I named Test. I saved it as a .docx. All of this worked. I re-opened it, made a change and closed it again and this also worked. Menu entry in "Document" also works. I have closed textmaker then reopened it, a number of times, using the menu and this also works. I have a /root/Softmaker folder but no hidden .softmaker file. Fonts and sharpness of the display seem fine to me. I only have one issue. When I click on File>Discover SoftMaker Office>Information my default browser opens but only as far as the start page. I assume it should take me to the SoftMaker site. However, for a 9MB .sfs so far I'm very impressed.

Regards,

Ken.

@keniv - thank you very much for the testing. That seems very positive and encouraging and matches my testing without savefile (I use adrv techniques for personalisation). I would note that MochiMoppel has highlighted the presence of an /etc/SoftMaker directory that may also contain relevant license info - so it may be prudent to copy (or delete) that directory also - in order to maintain license integrity. (Sorry that I don't have more complete advice at this stage -it appears that /root/SoftMaker is not the only directory to consider. I have not been aware of the /etc/SoftMaker directory before now so it is something I may need to track to see what/when it has an effect)
Cheers!

I an not sure of the best way to handle this missing function but I suspect it may be due to a couple of files missing from the reduced textmaker.

If you feel like testing further you could maybe try installing either of the following pet or sfs (in addition to the main Textmaker pet or sfs).
They add an html file that i think may activate the link you were using (not sure - just a guess...)

knv_textmaker_link_trial_gg-0.0.pet

knv_textmaker_link_trial_gg-0.0.sfs

Which menu? Do you mean menu item Help -> Discover SoftMaker Office? Works for me. Opens https://www.softmaker.com/en/

Other items like Help -> User Manual or Help -> Softmaker web site require local files which may be missing from your installation, however Textmaker would open a message with the path and name of the missing file.

I've downloaded the sfs, seems to be a fair alternative. Thanks greengeek. Like with my browsers, I moved the programme's entries from /root and symlinked it back. If you are online it wants to check stuff (registration?). I rather just use it offline, then nothing happens. Also - if the application is already running BEFORE you go online, it won't bother you with a licence key or whatever it's trying to access.

Holds the (scrambled) product key - after you've obtained one.

@greengeek

If you feel like testing further you could maybe try installing either of the following pet or sfs

I installed the pet in Dpup Stretch but still had no luck. However, I also have Racy551 on this partition so I tried the textmaker.sfs in Racy and it worked in that when I click on File>Discover SoftMaker Office>Information my default browser opened https://www.softmaker.com/en/. I struggled to find "help" then I noticed a small ? on the right hand side of the page. Help -> Discover SoftMaker Office also opened with https://www.softmaker.com/en/. Now in order to keep the browsers relitively up to date on these 32 bit OS I use Portables produced by forum member @mikewalsh. I use a number of these. In order to to maintain a default browser I have to edit /usr/loca/bin/defaultbrowser with the correct path. I checked Racys /usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser and the exec path looked OK. As the default browser in Dpup Stretch is different to that for Racy I thought I would check /usr/loca/bin/defaultbrowser in Dpup Stretch. It was missing "$@" at the end of the exec path. When I put it in all worked as @MochiMoppel described except that Help -> Softmaker web site opened to give file:///usr/share/freeoffice2018/html_en/index.htm. I thought this might be to do with what files were contained in the .pet. I can only appologise to you both for my mistake and in particular greengeek who I put to the trouble of making a .pet and .sfs.

Regards,

Ken.

Hi Ken - no problems about making the packages - it's great that you are testing and asking questions.
I am uncertain about the outcome though - are you saying that the pet made things worse? (and that the issue was the $@ ?)
On the basis of your testing do you think I should include the additional pet files in the original supernano pet?
Cheers!

@greengeek

are you saying that the pet made things worse?

No.

(and that the issue was the $@ ?)

Yes, as I had manually edited /usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser to

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
exec /initrd/mnt/dev_save/Portables/PaleMoon-portable32/LAUNCH

When I clicked the links Palemoon opened as far as the start page but did not open the site. This was because I missed the $@ ? off the end of the exec line. When I changed it to

Code: Select all

exec /initrd/mnt/dev_save/Portables/PaleMoon-portable32/LAUNCH "$@"

the browser opened as did the sites so the fault was one I introduced.

On the basis of your testing do you think I should include the additional pet files in the original supernano pet?

As a test I removed the .pet from Dpup Stretch then tried again.
File>Discover SoftMaker Office>Information opened https://www.softmaker.com/en/.
Help -> Discover SoftMaker Office also opened https://www.softmaker.com/en/.
Help -> Softmaker web site brought up a fault box shown in image (1). I checked to see if /usr/share/freeoffice2018/index.htm existed and it did not.
I reinstalled the .pet then tried again. This time the browser opened to that in image (2). Clicking the two links in this image also work. I tried again to see if /usr/share/freeoffice2018/index.htm existed. Index.htm did not exist but a new folder called html_en did. Inside that folder there were two files, freeofficelogo.png and index.htm. I guess of the files in the .pet these would be the ones that would have to be added as Help -> Softmaker web site is the only link of the ones mentioned above that now does not work unless the .pet is installed. As I am no expert in this stuff it might help if somebody else could try this just to confirm my results.
I also found Help>Manage license tells me I have 8 days left before I'll need a product key. Hope this is of help.

Regards,

Ken.

Are you able to post the file here? I don't know how to make an html test file that has images in it - I thought the images had to be in a separate directory rather than being embedded?

use base64 to convert the image to a text file. Then embed the text file into the html page's code.

Code: Select all

base64 small_puppy-logo.png > small_puppy-logo.txt
small_puppy-logo.png
small_puppy-logo.png (7.62 KiB) Viewed 4896 times

This is the html to display the converted image as a string

Code: Select all

please,do download any html file with
pictures, and tray to open it with your
textmaker!

No problem. I made a little test file

Code: Select all

<html>
<body>
	<h3>This is an external image</h3>
	<img src="https://forum.puppylinux.com/styles/prosilver/theme/images/puppy-60px.png">
	<h3>This is a local image</h3>
	<img src="./puppy-60px.png">
</body>
</html>

Opened in Textmaker:

html_with_images.png
html_with_images.png (29.34 KiB) Viewed 4868 times

However problems start when you have a HTML file with CSS style definitions or stylesheets. Textmaker doesn't know how to handle them, and this applies also to CSS referenced images. This means: Textmaker is pretty useless for HTML pages - unless they are as simple as above test.

What is also disappointing is Textmaker's inability to open a HTML page as text, so that I can examine the markup code. Abiword - in principle - can do this. The only way I found to open a HTML file as text is changing the extension to .txt.

@greengeek IMHO this thread should be moved to the Additional Software - Documents subforum. As you already suspected there is nothing Tahr related here. Users of other distros may not be interested in threads of the Tahr forum..

Unfortunately there has been a trend of significant criticism from moderators when posts are made as "general" posts - ie; offering information or questions that may be generally applicable across various pups. Often the demand from moderators is - "what PUPPY??", "what VERSION??" what CIRCUMSTANCES??" . The advice seems to be to make posts as specific as possible or don't post at all. At the moment I only test my software within Tahr32 so the software I am posting has only been tested (by me at least...) in Tahr32.

So I posted a few pets and sfs that seem to work for me (in Tahr32) but had not received wider testing.

The results (as often happens...) suggest to me that my own testing does not represent what happens in other peoples "real world" testing. So I definitely do not want to publicise my personal results (or software) in a more general sense.

Other posters have criticised Tahr32 as being outdated and way too old to bother with - so I am happy to raise my head here and suffer the crtitcism of users who are still bound to Tahr32 - but any wider audience is not for me. This forum punishes those who step out of line...

The tyranny of the petty bourgeoisie. :roll: I much prefer the philosophy expressed in Woody Guthrie's This Land in My Land which --regarding a No trespassing sign-- states: "But on the other side it didn't say nothing
That side was made for you and me." :lol:

There is an adage in Law: "Bad Cases make for Bad Law". A Forum is a place for communicating. Inevitably there will be those who abuse that offering. It is appropriate that there be rules so that people can't complain "I didn't know that wasn't permitted". But such rules should only be 'rules-of-thumb'. Circumstances should always favor permitting convenient and efficient communication.

I appreciate your concern and discretion. While it should be sufficient that your post having identified tahrpup32 as its focus implies that under a different Puppy "your experience may differ", caution might warrant an explicit statement to that effect.

At any rate, your caution prompted my post here, viewtopic.php?p=38925#p38925 with my use of the cautionary phrase "I think".

Actually, that's a wee bit unfair, Ian. You and I both know which individual always demands such information, but it's just his way of trying to help folks out. Trouble is, we all get "tarred with the same brush"..!

Personally, I have no problem with the way anybody structures a post, OR what the subject matter is. Some appear to believe, however, that whatever information is presented must always be done in such a way as to make it as easy as possible for as many folks as possible to apply said information to as many Puppies as possible.....

Image

You and I both know that this isn't always the case. But said individual - naming no names here - apparently doesn't see it that way. He does, however, help an awful lot of people. On top of which, other members, regardless of subject matter, seem determined to "nit-pick" and find fault with whatever anyone else posts about.....

Takes all sorts to make this dirt-ball spin.....and also to make a community. And there is no such thing as a "perfect" community..... :o

Mike. ;)

Puppy "stuff" ~ MORE Puppy "stuff" ~ ....and MORE! :D

Thanks to all the contributers here for sharing so much great work.
I entered the forum here today to make some packages run on EasyOS 3.1 Dunfell - I succeeded installing Midnight Commander, so I feel motivated to continue. Unfortunately after reading here I am as clever as before, not knowing a reason to move away from abiword to textmaker - why? :?

The problems I usually get with Abiword are:
- Strange visual artefacts onscreen ( such as windows or dialogs that close but dont fully disappear)
- Slow performance when creating a document more than a couple of pages long
- Text moving from one page to another for no valid reason (ie as if page breaks were being moved around randomly)
- Abiword closing randomly losing all of my work in the process
- Strange error messages something like "Too many open windows" and inability to save or close the document.
- Lots of other weirdness.

I still use Abiword to display and/or test fonts and if I want to make a simple one page pdf document - but for anything more complex it's just a heart breaker.

Yes, Abiword not great when working with large (well, not even all that large) documents. Takes a long time to open them, not good at all.

Indeed, I've noted too abiword crashes if pictures are not inserted "carefully", please I'd like to look for a better choice. For not to end up in a dead end in EasyOS, where do I start best with Textmaker? - Use one of the provided pets here or better compile a source code?

Compiling from source is not an option. Textmaker applications provided on the Forum are cut-down versions of older FreeOfficeSuite, https://www.freeoffice.com/en/, itself, generously provided by the publisher of SoftmakerOffice, https://www.softmaker.com/en/softmaker-office. Both are proprietary: no source code available.

If you want to 'dig your teeth' into what may be a reasonable word processor --'though offering less file-formats than abiword-- than may I suggest Ted, https://nllgg.nl/Ted/. Both 32 and 64-bit versions are available from that Site. I pointed out some of its capabilities here: viewtopic.php?t=4668.

It's been 8 years since TED's author published an update. I have no idea how well it will function in creating large documents. I would be interested in finding out.

I have not used EasyOS - is it able to run 32bit software? If yes then you could try the "fullfonts" pet (24mb) shown in the first post of this thread. (Textmaker works in many pups so it is worth trying).

I run the 64bit EasyOS on a 32bit machine (no time to explore the meaning of this).
considering time/use-ratio let me try to run the pet first. Thanks for advice!
