I downloaded Google-Chrome, and it appears and runs OK from the
applications menu.

How do I create a icon for chrome on the desktop?

If Google-Chrome appears on your Start-Menu --Start>Internet>Google-Chrome or similar-- displaying an icon than it's easy to create a desktop launcher.
File browse to /usr/share/applications and look for the file named Google-Chrome.desktop or similar. Don't have that file-browser window covering your entire desktop. Then just drag Google-Chrome.desktop to your desktop. That creates a symbolic link on your desktop to the file used by your Start-Menu.
You can get rid of the ".desktop" ending on the launcher. Right-Click it and from the pop-up window select "Edit". In fact, you can name it whatever you want. It will still be a symbolic link to /usr/share/applications/Google-Chrome.desktop.

Just above the "Edit" choice on the pop-up menu is File "Google-Chrome????". Hovering will produce a panel from which you can select "Set Icon". If selected a new window will open. You can change the display icon by dragging the icon of your choice into its box.
Icons/pixmaps can be anywhere on your system. But many are located in /usr/share/icons and /usr/share/pixmaps. So, if you download one from the web, those are convenient locations to place them so that you can find them again.

If you drag a .desktop file or a RoxApp to the desktop, the icon that is displayed by the original file will also be displayed on the desktop (Rox pinboard)

Typically a .desktop file or a rox application dir will have it's own icon.
