Distorted sound from Acer Aspire 1 ZA3 USB port. OK from built in speakers

Post by fernan »

Hello. I'm having this problem since I "upgraded" (or downgraded...) my laptop computer. New computer is an ACER ASPIRE ONE ZA3, Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU Z520 @ 1.33GHz, 2gb RAM, according to the Internet known to have some problems with linux.

The problem is present with different puppy versions (Tahrpup and bionicpup, both 32 bits since it's a 32 bit computer), and even in RAM mode, ignoring any previous setting.

If I boot the computer with the "acpi=off" option, the sound is almost OK. But time to time a small distortion is heard.

Booting with ACPI enabled, it's totally unusable. I'd like to troubleshoot what's happening with the 2 boot options, to see if I can set the computer to run with ACPI and listen to my music as I used to do with my previous laptop.

I'm connecting the USB port to my Maverick D1 DAC, which worked perfectly fine with this same OS but a different laptop. Using MPD (Music Player Daemon) or the default audio player gives the same results. Tried a cheap USB sound card, and the result was the same: totally distorted sound from the USB port, but OK with "acpi=off".

Do you have any idea of what could be happening, why the different behavior? What's the relationship between ACPI and the USB sound? I'd expect the USB port to send raw data to the DAC.

I'll appreciate any help. One of the main tasks of my computer is to play music.
