Trouble Booting Save in Xenialpup64: "Kernel Panic" [SOLVED]

Hi Everyone,

I've been a casual Puppy Linux user for the past few years without any issues. Lately I'm having trouble booting up Xenialpup64 7.5 on a desktop I'm using. I've tried this multiple times with both the 32 and 64 bit version of Xenialpup and different USB drives. After booting up the OS, creating my save, and shutting down, I'm unable to boot up my save file and am presented with this message:

For reference: The computer is a Dell Optiplex 760, 2GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo; Running Lubuntu on the hard drive.
I always use "Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.6.6" to make my bootable Linux drives. The puppy save file is always saved to the bootable USB drive, I used all the suggested settings when creating my save.

Work on one specific version and let us get it working.

Looking at the size of the save file.
It could be too small.
512MB is small now with sizes of programs and what they want to store for data.
A warning about running out of space is not that good.

Delete the save file you made.
Boot not using the save as it booted the first time.
Make basic settings and setup.
Shutdown making a save.
Pick a size of 3 or 4 GB.

The name you gave the save file is a little confusing maybe.
It has xenialpup64 in it twice.
Try not adding anything to the name when you make the save file.
It will be named xenialpup64save.2fs

Could also try using ext3 or 4 for file system selection.
.2fs is ext2 and that can get errors.

Other idea.
Save file could be corrupted and fragmented.
If the USB has a fat32 format.
The file system can get fragmented.
You will have to check the USB using windows defrag and chkdsk programs in Windows.

Thank you so much! I now have my new Xenialpup64 save up and working. I'm glad what I posted could help solve this issue.

I didn't customize my safe file name and saved it as ext4. I also chose 4gb as a save file size.

Going forward, will the 4gb save file not also get to a point where it will be "too small"?
I do at times have some confusion as to what is being stored on the save file. When I install programs such as GIMP or a new internet browser, are they taking up space in the save file, or on my USB drive? (I'm using a 32GB USB drive). Thanks again.

Yes the save can run out of space.
Anything you install and settings goes into the save.

You can store stuff outside of the save.
/mnt/home is a good place. It is the top layer of the USB partition.
/mnt/home is outside of the save and you can make directories in it, to group stuff, if you want.
Put downloads, documents, videos, pictures, programs that are SFS packages, etc...., really anything not installed or settings.
It will use whatever free space is in the USB partition.
The save file is a set size and the free space in it, is available to stuff going into the save.

You do not have the restriction with the size if you use a pupsave directory.
The size of a directory is not fixed and is only limited by the space there is on the partition.
You can use a directory if you have the pupsave on a partition that has a linux filesystem (ext2/3/4).
