I got a new laptop for school, and I wanted to be able to run Puppy (for a variety of reasons). I'm having odd issues, though...

I've tried both FossaPup64 and BionicPup64, both as live CDs and installing via LICK...

Live CDs get me to the boot selection screen (normal, all ram, etc.), but when I try to start, Puppy crashes and says it can't find the main SFS file, leaving me at a command prompt.

If I try installing via LICK, booting brings up a GRUB command prompt -- no menu. (I can EXIT and it boots Windows)

Er... any suggestions?

The laptop is an HP 17-by4065st -- Intel Core i5-1135G7, 128GB SSD, 1 TB hard drive, 8GB RAM.

I should note that I, under LICK, I tried booting with "Secure Boot" enabled and with it disabled -- LICK works, but always brings me to a GRUB command prompt without a GRUB menu.

Lick installer usually just works with no issues.

First thing, I suggest you use one of the very new Puppy Linux versions, on that hardware.
It will have the best chance of having needed stuff, to support the hardware.
I suggest Fossapup64 9.5

Only talk about one specific Puppy version, to get this booting.
Let us figure out, getting it working, before trying other versions.

First possible cause of problem.
When you shutdown Windows 10.

Do a normal full shutdown.

DO NOT shutdown in HIBERNATE!!!
Hibernate keeps Windows 10 in control of the internal drive.
The drive is not fully released.

For USB or CD/DVD booting
With UEFI bios controlling the computer startup.
In the UEFI setup.
Have secure boot disabled or legacy boot enabled or CSM enabled. (Depends on UEFI version, what it has for these settings)
That assures the UEFI will allow, other than Windows 10, to boot from an external drive.

With UEFI setup correctly.
The CD/DVD should boot OK, if it was correctly burned, as a image burn.
Look on the CD/DVD.
Should see a bunch of different files on it.

If you try a USB drive install.
Use one of these programs to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=156&t=157

For USB installs.
There is a setting to change, in the Fossapup64 9.5 boot loader menu entry, that may help in finding needed files.
pmedia=cd
Change to pmedia=usbflash

The boot loader configuration file is:
grub.cfg
Look for this file on the USB and open it in a text editor program.
Change the pmedia= entries you find.

Could maybe be how you installed to USB.
How did you do it?

I just tried LICK 1.3.4 with Fossapup64 9.5 -- installed to root C drive (SSD).
Normal, full shutdown -- then I turned the system back on.

"WELCOME TO GRUB" appears.

After a brief delay, I get a grub> prompt.

TRY 2 - CD
I rebooted to BIOS, made sure SECURE BOOT is set to DISABLED.
Reboot and press F9 to access the boot loader -- I choose Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive (UEFI)
GNU GRUB loader appears -- I wait a bit and it loads up a FOSSAPUP menu with multiple boot options. I let it automatically start with the first option...
During the system boot up, I get the following before dropping to console:

Waiting for USB STORAGE done
Finding puppy main SFS file failed
Dumping last lines of /tmp/bootinit.log...
3: PSUBDIR= P_BP_FN= P_DEF_FN=puppy_fossapup64_9.5.sfs
HAVE_PARTS=''

*** /puppy_fossapup64_9.5.sfs not found.
*** Error is too critical, dropping out to console...

Side note -- I found a USB drive from last year that I had installed EasyOS on -- it appears to boot up without issues, so perhaps I need to switch over to a USB installation...

USB install may be better to try.

Kind of looks like it is trying to find stuff on a USB not the CD.

With UEFI constantly being updated and also being setup by computer manufacturers.
Options for settings in the UEFI could be anything.
May be some setting in the UEFI for options about booting from internal CD drive.

One thing to try.
If you have any USB drives plugged into the computer.
Do not have any plugged in, when you try booting from the CD.

about using Lick.

Windows 8 and up have a feature called 'Fast Startup'. This cannot be enabled if LICK is installed. LICK disables Fast Startup upon installation.

Could check in the UEFI setup and see if fast startup is disabled.

UEFI Systems with Secure Boot

LICK supports secure boot, but requires a manual step during the first reboot.

On the first reboot, if you see a blue screen with writing, press enter to select OK.
Press enter again to select Enroll Hash.
Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight loader.efi, and press enter.
Press the down arrow to select Yes, then press enter.
Use the down arrow to highlight Exit, then press enter.

On subsequent reboots, these steps will not need to be taken.

In my HP Laptop, I have booted EasyOs and attempted to install easy on internal harddisk. (SDD) However, Easyos is not detecting internal disk ! ?. Is any settings in HP laptop to be changed?.

I've tried with nothing plugged in -- still gets the same errors.

With a full USB drive boot, it does work -- but, sadly, it appears that there are no working drivers for the wifi/touchpad/etc. on the laptop, so it's a bit useless as of now.

I'll have to try plugging into a network port and seeing if I can update/download drivers that work with the system...

The laptop has a built in SSD, HD, CD/DVD, and an SD reader -- it's possible that something is happening at boot that prevents GRUB from detecting the proper location?

Laptops usually have a switch or specific key to press that will turn WIFI on/off.
check to see if yours is turned on.
Puppy Linux booting process may or may not turn it on.

See if it is turned on

To determine if it is Hard Blocked. In a terminal (console):

 rfkill list all

wlan0 is usually the wifi

If it indicates it is hard blocked.
There is a switch on the laptop that turns it off/on.
Press that swich and rerun

 rfkill list all

to see if it worked to stop the hard block.

Do you understand how to use the Network Connection Wizards?

Yes, with very new hardware there is a slight lag in Linux having the needed drivers and firmware.
The kernel may have the driver, but Fossapup may not have the firmware.
Need to know what the hardware specifically is.

Menu->System->Pup-Sysinfo->Devices
See if someplace in devices it has info about the WIFI hardware. (probably will not be under network, because it is not being used)
Post what it says for info.

For the touchpad
See if under devices->input there is anything about the touchpad and post if there.

In the Bios configurations (or whatever it is called these days), I had to set it to AHCI (No Raid). If I want to boot windows, I have to change the bios back. My Dell laptop is probably 6 months old now. I had to find a wifi driver for my laptop. I'm running EasyOs on this machine.
