Dead keyboard and mouse with newer kernel

I'm trying to get a newer kernel to work with Racy. So far I get the xenial kernel working. Newer and I can boot to desktop but keyboard and mouse dead then. Booting with pfix=nox and running the xorgwizard does not work either (I can only set the monitor settings, no options for keyboard/mouse). Any ideas?

@amethyst :-

Me no expert with that stuff, Nic, but all I can think of is that newer kernels must be missing certain modules that were present in older releases. Either that, or they've "deprecated" certain labels, and re-named long-running modules with new labels.

Or, perhaps the kernels you're trying just weren't compiled with support for certain hardware items. It's anybody's guess. How old is the hardware in question?

Perhaps ask some of our Puppians who regularly compile kernels. Probably they'd have a better idea of how to check for this stuff...

Mike. ;)

What is the computers hardware?
Make and model would let us lookup all the specs.

Hardware support for old hardware is being dropped by the newer the Linux kernel.
But it depends on the hardware and what version of the kernel, if hardware is still supported.

Problem seems distro, hardware and kernel related. I can use newest kernels from Precise upwards (it works although all the new kernels have some hangtime before displaying desktop). This can be the way the new kernels are compiled because the Xenial kernel is the latest to boot quickly on my machine. Racy seems to reach peak with the Xenial kernel, the newest it can handle. Also possible that problems are Xorg related, version may be too long in the tooth.
