Bionicpup64 - Daylight Saving Time Europe/London - GMT+0

Post by PuppyandCo »

Bionicpup64

UK time is 13:11
Clock on Puppy says 12:11

Clock settings on Puppy can't be accessed conveniently by right-clicking or double-clicking on the clock [:!: this is undesirable]
I believe there are two distinct menus [ :!: having 2 distinct menus for the same thing, which actually operate slightly differently is a bug]

One is at Menu > Setup > QuickSetup First Run Settings

Time can be set to:-
Europe/London or;
GMT 0 or;
GMT+0 (London, Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, Reykjavik, Casablanca)

All three settings display the time as 12:11 and fail to correct this when they are changed/reselected. [ :!: this is a bug, it should apply daylight saving time automatically]

There is an additional menu within Menu > Setup > Puppy Setup > Set timezone
Selecting Europe/London on this menu briefly changes the time to 13:11 but after 1 second it changes back to 12:11 [ :!: this is a bug specific to this menu not the Quicksetup]

Menu > Setup > Puppy Setup > Set Date and Time allows me to manually add one hour
However in the past on Slacko6.0 I have had problems with emails displaying the wrong time when this goes back the other way
There is the option to sync to a time-server which would be preferable, but this brings up a notification saying Synchronizing to [time server] and then an entire window showing the Updated Time. [ :!: this is an undesirable behaviour if the user wants this to happen in the background]

you are probably after menu>>desktop>>psync

Are you sure the computers internal clock is correctly set?
It has changed to daylight savings time?
Does the internal clock seem to be keeping correct time?
If the internal clock is not working 100% correctly.
It can cause time setting problems, unless you have time being auto adjusted, by syncing to a time server.

it should apply daylight saving time automatically

No it should not.
Puppy is used by people all over the world.
Not everyone uses daylight savings time.
Even in the United States, there are several places that do not adjust time for it.

If you are talking about Bionicpup64 8.0 a 6 year old version of Puppy.
It does it this way.
Right or left click on the clock display in the tray.
Pupclockset program opens.
All settings are provide with it.

Newer versions of Puppy do have a right click menu with selections.

BigPup is correct-"Puppy is used by people all over the world.
Not everyone uses daylight savings time.
Even in the United States, there are several places that do not adjust time for it."
In the USA, the states of Arizona and Hawaii do not use DST. Also, The US territories
of Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, the United States Virgin Islands,
and Puerto Rico do not use DST since they are located in the tropics. However, it is
important to note that the Independent State of Samoa has observed DST from 2010 but
American Samoa, which smaller, cannot use DST because of the Uniform Time Act.
Finally-Only about 62 of the world's 195 countries observe DST. Although Daylight Saving
Time commonly practiced in North America and European Summer Time (EST) practiced
by many European nations, there are few countries from the rest of the world that
observe DST. Brazil and Paraguay are the only countries in South America with regions
observing DST. Few countries in the Caribbean and Asia observe DST with no countries
in Central America and Africa; Namibia being the last to drop the practice in 2017.

Is it really so old? So far I thought this puppy was released in 2018 :o

DST is a defining feature of the London time zone and should be applied automatically if that time zone is selected
It is the difference between London and GMT+0
Users all over the rest of the world are not the problem of the users who do need to adjust for DST, in timezones where DST defines what the time is
This is an area where Puppy should be able to match the functionality of all other OSes in the last 20+ years, including those of smart alarm clocks
For example, Ubuntu knows what the time is in London - because it correctly implements the London timezone as distinct from GMT+0

Thanks
I was relieved that this system, which I also use, is not so much aged ;)

OK, sorry, I think I first misunderstood what you are talking about.

All setup programs are designed to accept what you put into them for settings.
Wrong input is just accepted.
You set the time wrong it is not going to correct it.

the auto change for daylight savings time is suppose to take place on the date it should change.
If the time zone setting calls for the change and the date setting is correct.
The setup programs do not auto override the wrong time or date you set in it.

A not working correctly hardware clock will make time settings go wrong no matter what you change.

syncing to a time server corrects a bad working internal hardware clock.

You are not saying you set the time to correct time.
Other settings you make in the setup program, changes it to a not correct time?

Timezone was set initially-correctly selected as Europe/London, when I installed puppy in October (frugal install to USB key)
On Sunday 28 March, Daylight Saving Time should have moved the time 1 hour forward
This did not happen on Puppy as it did for Ubuntu, Windows, the timeservers, smart alarm clocks etc

I set a date/time after the timezone failed to apply DST as expected
The time now shows correctly, but as I mentioned I have experienced problems on older versions of bionic when the time is set manually
And if this has to be done manually, that's a bug isn't it?

bigpup wrote: Mon Mar 29, 2021 11:10 am

A not working correctly hardware clock will make time settings go wrong no matter what you change.

The Windows installation on the laptop's internal HDD shows the correct time, so I doubt the hardware clock is wrong.

bigpup wrote: Mon Mar 29, 2021 11:10 am

syncing to a time server corrects a bad working internal hardware clock.

Syncing to a timeserver occurred to me as a workaround, but one of the other bugs mentioned is that the option of syncing to a timeserver on every boot isn't invisible/in the background

bigpup wrote: Mon Mar 29, 2021 11:10 am

I corrected the time manually as mentioned.

However there is also a bug that changing the timezone manually to Europe/London causes DST to be applied correctly but only momentarily - it moves the clock forward but reverts back to the old time after 1 second. This was specific to the "Puppy Setup" version of the timezone menu and didn't appear on the "QuickSetup" version of it. It seems strange having two versions of the menu that sets the timezone.
