Broken unicode support on fossapup64 9.5 (Solved)

Post by wanthinker »

As the title say, it seems the support for unicode characters isn't working "right" if at all on fossapup64 9.5...
I tried with custom setting and default setting, even tried following advice/guide like this one to no avail.

I mainly notice this because some files i have got japanese characters in their filenames.

Lastly i tried to install xterm, since i saw that it could fix things, or at least to see if the result would be different there, with similar result.
Apps tested for unicode support:
- urxvt (default setting and later on custom)
- xterm (installed, default setting and later on custom)
- palemoon (default)

Didn't check other apps.

If anyone have any working unicode on their fossapup (9.5) installation or have any suggestion/advice, feel free to.

Broken unicode support on fossapup64 9.5

Post by MochiMoppel »

Unicode support in Fossapup is fine and not different from other Puppies.

Nevertheless support in urxvt has never worked for me. Japanese characters are not supported. Urxvt seems to be very picky, even within the same Unicode block. That's why I use the Sakura terminal, which has better support. Here a comparison for Armenian characters in urxvt and sakura. (try yourself and copy the demo string to your own console window: ԱԲԳԴԵԶԷԸԹԺԻԼԽԾ
)

Palemoon also failed for my Japanese webpages, but this was a matter of suitable XML declaration and after finding one that pleases all browsers I have no problems.

I see. Thanks for your detailed feedback :)

I only ever managed to make urxvt fully work with large amount of unicode characters on distros like popos or archlinux, though I'm not sure what to do in fossapup to reproduce the same working result...

I'll try sakura terminal, never tried this one before so i guess this would be a welcome change of pace.

Too bad for palemoon though, i also managed to notice it only work fine with Japanese characters on other distros but not on certain puppies (this one included) :/

Re: sakura terminal

Seems like it work perfectly for the Armenian string in your example (used echo with quote) but still doesn't display Japanese chars right :/

Palemoon should work for most Japanese sites but I currently don't use Fossapup so I can't say for sure.

do you use default configuration with sakura? I just installed it but didn't change the config yet.

Is it on fossapup 9.5? (given you mentioned you don't use it much so can't check for palemoon afaik)
would love to try your configuration if you don't mind.

Edit: Would love to know the font you're using too!

No. Changed bg/fg colors and most importantly changed font. The default is font=terminus 12 which -as I have no terminus font - seems to render characters in Sans. I changed it to font=Monospace 12. My Japanese font is M+1P+IPAG, however none of the config settings should impact the ability to render Japanese characters as long as any Japanese font is installed.

I mainly notice this because some files i have got japanese characters in their filenames.

I have made a Japanized version of fossapup64. Its default Japanese font is M+1P+IPAG.
The fossapup64 thread in the Puppy Linux Japanese Forum
https://sakurapup.browserloadofcoolness ... =24&t=3515

The font M+1P+IPAG does not cover all the Japanese characters, so there are some cases where part of the characters are not shown.

Aside from the issue which result from M+1P+IPAG, the only problem I notice is that when a zip file created on Windows contains Japanese file names they are not shown properly.
To solve the issue, I installed unzip_6.0-5~5.52~ja4_amd64.deb, which the Ubuntu Japanese Team prepared.

Thanks, guess I'll try fiddling more with sakura config then!
Did you install the M+1P+IPAG font using puppy package manager or something else? Can't seem to find it unless i don't use the right search term...

Thanks for the suggestion! Yeah, i did thought of doing this as i stumbled upon that post when searching with the term "fossapup Japanese font" for some reason...
I wouldn't mind using it given it would be the most working and simple solution, but i only need to see Japanese output and prefer to not input Japanese, given my poor proficiency in it (and I'm also trying to better my English).

Unless it have English support too? Guess I'll try it on qemu later today, thanks again!

Code: Select all

fc-cache -fv

after copying it to /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/

Cheers

Funny, I never had to do that.

I wouldn't have needed to do that if i rebooted X, or open a new terminal afaik. Doesn't hurt to do it :)

I read that you have troubles with unicode support in urxvt in fossapup?

Have you tried changing

Code: Select all

TERM=xterm

in /etc/profile to

Code: Select all

TERM=rxvt-unicode-256color

maybe

Code: Select all

TERM=rxvt-unicode

?
It helped me to get MC working properly with 256color skins in urxvt.
