Hello, I am using a Toshiba Satellite A200 Laptop and I'd like to install Puppy Linux on an USB pendrive and use it as a live installation. The boot from USB is not present in my laptop BIOS but only HD, CD/DVD Drives, FDD and LAN, so I think to install PLoP boot manager onto a CD and boot from it choosing the USB Pendrive. Is that a correct procedure? And what kind of USB pendrive do I need? 16 GB, 32 GB or more? Best regards

the more space you can have, the more your pendrive will be reliable. having the larger size possible will help to avoid rapid wearing out of media, especially if you plan to add several sfs files on your pendrive that will become your home for puppy. I currently have a 16 GB pendrive, but I ordered a 32 GB version in order to stay even safer

I suspect that if you are in the BIOS you will only be able to set the option to boot from USB if there is an actual USB thumbdrive plugged in at the time.

Solutionfor any PCs with a bootable CD/DVD drive:

1. Make a 15MB CD using these instructions with your PUPPPY ISO on your USB or your HDD in a folder named /boot-isos.

2. Boot the CD and follow the 'bouncing ball'

3. Away you go. (It boots extremely fast and hits all the high points you are after and some).

PLoP boot manager is a good way to go, if anything else fails!
I used it a lot some years ago!

The old computer is broken meanwhile...

Have to agree with you on that one, Jafa.

Ye anciente Dell is exactly the same. No USB present in either of the two ports, no option in the F12-activated 'one-time boot menu'. If a USB is present in one of the ports, the 'boot' option for it is there.....even if you're only using the flash drive for storage.

I suspect the process works the same for most laptops.....even, perhaps, some desktops (BIOS depending, of course).

A 1GB flash drive will work, but not a lot of room to add stuff to it.
I generally use 8GB or bigger ones.

Looking at that video his has the option to boot from USB.

I wonder.
Is the partition on the USB flagged boot?
some computers need that to see a drive as boot-able device.

Mmm..! You could be right, there; the number of times I've forgotten to do that myself is nobody's business. I've often thought that gParted really ought to be written in such a way that, as soon as you've created a new partition, a window should pop-up and ask "Do you want to make this partition bootable?"

In other words, offer the option straight-away, instead of assuming the user knows what they're doing & leaving it to them to dig around & bring it up. It would make it that little bit more 'user-friendly', for all that it's a very useful utility already.

I think you should try to enable bios.

Hello, Thanks a lot to all of you for your suggestions and advice. I'll take them all into account. Jafadmin is perfectly right. According to what he said I plugged in an USB pendrive and it appeared in the BIOS a a bootable device ... Best regards

I was able to boot from usb on computer without this possibility doing this:
1. Boot from any puppy CD.
2. On the screen with info:

For more boot options press the <F2> key.

press F2.
3. And type:

puppy pdev1=sdXX

where XX is your USB device ID eg. c1.
After this puppy should use main sfs file and your save file from usb drive.
