Pinta drawing and image editing

Post by bigpup »

This runs with no problem in my install of Fossapup64 9.5
Should run in other Puppies.

Here is a appimage of Pinta
https://apprepo.de/appimage/pinta
Download the Pinta.appimage file to anyplace you want to.
Right click on it and go to properties.
Give it exec permissions.

Left click on the Pinta.appimage file to run it.

Running xenialpup64-7.5 and it would not start as described .
Any quick fixes?

Does take about 5 seconds to start, after clicking on the pinta.appimage file.

Did you give the pinta.appimage file exec permissions before you tried to use it?

I do have my Xenialpup64 7.5 fully updated by using Quickpet->Info->Xenialpup updates

I'll experiment a bit more and try the update . I've messed around a lot on mine so I'll try a new install too.

I hate to say it, but you've wasted your time with this. Yes, using lzop will INDEED give you maximum compression (and therefore tiny file size).....but most Puppies/'extracters' can't deal with lzop.

Better by far to stick with the traditional formats, like .tar.gz, or .tar.bz2.......or even .zip if that takes your fancy. Easiest is to use the

Code: Select all

mksquashfs

.....command that is built-in to every Puppy, OOTB. This is designed to build Squash FS packages in the approved 'Puppy way'..!

Mike, my download showed up with the ending 'squashfs'. It took me a moment to remember that ljlj built it for debiandog. I merely edited the ending to read 'sfs' and sfs-loaded it into Bionicpup64 with 32-bit compatibility SFS loaded.
Seems OK, though starting via command line 'pinta' shows a bunch of 'critical' glib errors >not totally unexpected as Bionicpup64 uses 64-bit glib.
Changing the ending to sfs also means it could be Left-Clicked for viewing etc.
I'll have to try it under dpup stretch.
Edit: Also seems OK under Slacko 5.7.x. And opening via terminal discloses no problems at all.
The appimage whose link bigpup provided seems fine under Bionicpup64. Of course, that means there's another usable application and I'm not sure how and when to use it rather than, say, gimp or mtpaint. So I'm not sure whether I should thank  ljlj and bigpup for adding to our menagerie or  damn them for adding more confusion to my world. :?

P.S. TBH, drawing programs will always remain a mystery to me. I'm astigmatic -- the world is always slightly out of focus. Fine for seeing 'the whole'; a challenge for immediately appreciating details. Today I had to make a new appointment before leaving my doctor's office. (Routine exam, no worries). The secretary was busy, so for a minute or two, I stood near her desk examining the surroundings. On the door was a sign:

which I read as:

@mikeslr :-

A-ha. Never thought of that, specially since I've never really used the 'Dogs'.....reminds me too much of why I left Ubuntu, what with Synaptic and the rest of the crap that comes with a mainstream distro.

I'll give it a try. Cheers for the heads-up.

O-kayyy....

Well, it works fine under Xenialpup32. However, it did entail some "messing-about", as I half suspected it would.

I renamed it to .sfs, as opposed to .squashfs, and was now able to read the contents. (This was in Quirky64 April 7.0.1, that jrb gave the 'light' treatment to.) Fair enough, I thought.....so I re-booted into Xenial32, and attempted to load it. No joy; couldn't mount 'pup_ro6'. It was that damn lzop compression, just like I thought; Xenial32 couldn't handle it. "Not supported". Oh, boy.....here we go. Again.

I couldn't mount it or read it, so I booted BACK into Quirky; obviously, the use of lzop compression was just one of Barry's 'experiments''. So; I mounted it, and copied the contents off into a directory in my 'work-area'. I then booted back into Xenial32, and re-built the SFS with Xenial's own mksquashfs. Bingo.

Works nicely, as I said. And at least this has the advantage that it should now run okay under other 32-bitzers of the same vintage. Hey-ho.

The things I do for a bit of software.....!!

Mike. ;)
