USB/Thunderbolt Connections discussion

I am considering a configuration external device that is Thunderbolt3 (TB3).

I have read that TB3 and USB-C cables are interchangable.

As I understand that TB3 cable can "work" thru a USB-C port, I am curious if a TB3 device will work to a USB-C port on my PC?

Help or advice is requested.

BTW: I've just discovered one problem that many may also been not understanding. I have always read of backward compatibility of USB devices: Never knew of cabling incompatibility that leads to device-system peformance. (I must now find and label all of my USB cables)

Edit:

  • It appears that you can connect a USB-C cabled device(s) to a Thunderbolt port and it will work.

  • It appears that a Thunderbolt device WILL NOT OPERATE on a USB-C port. Edit: This appears to NOT be entirely accurate (see next post).

Additional Info:

  • A USB-C port as well as a Thunderbolt port can work with "switch/hub units" allowing multiple devices to connect to a single port.

Edit: Title change

There are some externals coming onto the market which are BOTH Thunderbolt as well as USB-C. Watch this video for testing such a unit.

More info as we march into our future.

Today, this is announced: Thunderbolt4+USB4 in one.

USB4 is HERE!

USB4 units are available for our use. More PCs in 2021 will begin shipping with these ports, starting NOW!

Users MUST now become knowledgible in 4 important things

  • unit selection

  • cable selection

  • PC port abilities

  • Hub abilities

if expectations in behavior and performance are to be met.

Daunting!

Talked to a friend recently.
“Well?” said I, “you probably use these USB 3.2 ports with might and main?”
“Do I have them?!?” says he, “I don't even have a flash drive of that standard. I was just in the regional center... And bought a motherboard for the occasion.”
So it goes :)

Early rollout started. Prices should plummel by summer.

Remember 4 requirements for ANY USB use.
