Pale Moon Skepticism

I'm weening off the default 27.6.1 in Xenial and leaning towards Seamonkey. I just unloaded 28.3.1 with the same performance hiccups.
...Pale Moon is based on much older code. It won’t have the new web features or performance improvements of modern versions of Firefox, nor does it support watching certain kinds of video with DRM.
Besides, Pale Moon tends to perform worse on browser benchmarks compared to modern browsers, which isn’t surprising given its age. The developer disagrees with browser benchmarking, but it’s not surprising a browser based on four year old code might be slower than a modern one.
The italic is exactly what I'm experiencing.

Hi JASpup,
Palemoon is a browser with ordinary performance. I prefer it over very old versions of Puppy. The portable version of Palemoon is sometimes useful on some versions of Puppy

The latest version of Palemoon is 28.17.0
If you are going to say bad stuff about something.
Make it about the latest version.
There are 33 updates since version 28.3.1
Stuff has been done to improve it!

In addition to what bigpup said, there are other MUCH more important features of web browsers
than whatever some artificial benchmark will show. I've NEVER put much stock in those tests,
they have been "gamed" by the various makers of web browsers for years. A much better "test"
for me is simply "Does this browser display the websites I visit in a usable fashion?" If it doesn't,
I look for alternatives. I chose Palemoon after fiddling and tinkering with Firefox for months with
little success, especially regarding sound. If I had my "druthers", I'd still be running the old Opera
Presto 11.64 or maybe 12.16. But most "modern" websites choke Opera 11-12 if the server will
even acknowledge the "get" request from it.
No web browser I've ever trialed has been "perfect"...but there was a time when Opera 3.64 came
pretty darn close on my old Win3X machine! So much so I had a registration key for that one!
Since most of my Pups are 32 bit, I'm pretty much stuck with Palemoon 28.16 for now...pending
some 3rd party developer stepping forward and not gaining the wrath of "NTP" at PM forums as
some of those working on older WinXP and such builds have!

The latest Palemoon (well recent version 28.14.2 which I have on my machine) works OOTB on an old Puppy like Precise. I don't think you will get any other new browser which will work (if you're lucky) without upgrades to the old Puppy. Although I also have the newest Firefox (which works on the new Puppys), I use the same version Palemoon on all my Puppys old and new almost exclusively.

What's wrong with Opera Presto? Until July Opera 11.64 was my default browser. The last fully featured Opera Presto, before the devs ditched some "seldom used" features - maybe I was the only one using them .
I had to update to 12.16 because 11.64 is not supported by our new forum, but overall Opera Presto is still far better than any other "modern" browser I tried. I use it for sites I visit regularly and which still support this browser, for all other sites it has to be Palemoon.

Mochi---there's nothing "wrong" with Opera Presto, except as more and more CA certificates and site TSLs
get "upgraded", the site usabiity with Opera goes down. People mentioned these browser speed tests,
I'm sure you remember when Opera Presto absolutely blew all the others out of the water! And as you
noted, the features included OOTB without needing dozens of "extensions" made Opera Presto superior,
anyhow versions below 12. I myself stayed at version 10.10 for a long time...smaller, quicker to launch,
quicker to display. I once hoped Opera Software would release Presto to the open source community...
but no longer think it feasible (new ownership of Opera), You weren't the only user that used the
features in-built to Opera Presto!

Does it connect to https sites? My old Opera browser does not. Can't watch youtube either. Bit useless nowadays. Having said that, I use Opera Mini running on an emulator for general browsing. Saves a lot of data. Posting from it now.

The loss of connecting to secure sites is why I had to leave Opera Presto, not to mention the javascript
that the Carakan JS renderer couldn't handle. I never tried running an emulator to use Opera Mini on
my PCs, though I did use Opera Mini on my old PDA. Since the change in ownership of Opera Software,
not sure where stuff is sent...nor stored! Years ago it wasn't stored. Time marches on, things change...
though not always for the better!

I've been using Opera Mini for years with miceoemualator. You need JRE for the Java version. The Java version has stopped development and all new Opera Mini versions are Android, etc. Those can also be run on an emulator apparently.

I still use Opera 12.16 as my mail client. I couldn't find anything simpler, smaller and more useful.
Pale Moon 28.17 32bit in my DpupBuster 64bit as my primary browser (it uses significantly less ram than its 64bit counterpart).
And Waterfox is at hand for those "quirky" sites here and there
