Hi to all,

I am from Germany and my english ist extremly bad. A little bit like Google translator. So I just can hope, that I will accomplish to describe my problem and understand the answers (if I get some).

My problem is: My beloved xenialpup (I work with it since two years now) has absolutely no problems to connect to a router with WPA2. Tried it several times. BUT: As it seems only directly. Means: I am houseless and are sitting in a holiday flat for the next three month. Warm X-mas with a bed to sleep. Great. The man that hired the flat (an older one) has a Fritzbox as router and allows his guests to use the Internet with a special guest-account. Don`t know how he configurated it.

As it doesn`t work, he said, that never guests had problems to connect to the internet via this guest-account and it must be my old laptop and my strange OS. I suggested to connect directly to his router and ... as expected ... it works without a problem. So it is definitely NOT my "strange" puppy-OS and my old MSI VR601.

Than something extremly strange happend. He is very helpful and brought by an internet stick (did not work) and accidentally he rebootet in Vista. Vista was pre-installed and I kept a bare version without any service pack or update just for reading documents that I can`t read with puppy. The network adapter (Atheros AR5007EG) quit working in Vista without a special update a long time ago and I did this special update deliberately not, because I didn´t want Vista connecting itself to the internet for searching updates.

The renter of the flat saw the windows internet symbol in the bottom right corner, clicked it, it found several WLAN-connections and - I could not believe it - he entered the guest-account
password an got in!!!

The next hours I tried to get a browser that works to get a connection to the world outside. I am totally foreign to this region, with a bad healed broken ankle joint not good afoot, have to manage a lot of things and there is the corona lockdown... horrible. I am "on" now, but not really. The internet connection breaks down sometimes all 5 to 10 minutes. It says that the access is just local.

I do not have a lot of money and - much more important - I don´t want to buy a windows laptop.When a bare dead windows version with a missing Atheros driver can connect to the Internet, so why can´t puppy do so? What could be wrong or is missing?

Im not able to understand the log report. I suppose - as far as I understand it - that my puppy recognizes the Fritzbox but is not able to connect to it via this special channel.

Is there anyone out there - if possible a patient one, because I just use puppy - that can help me solve that problem?

how I connect

I never had to dig deeper into networking so i don't know very much about it.
Ich mußte mich nie eingehender mit Netzwerken beschäftigen, daher weiß ich auch nicht viel darüber.

Just one thing i noticed in your screenshots:
Eins ist mir in den Screenshots aufgefallen:

Firewall Status Tray Icon indicates that your firewall is up and running.
Das Firewall Status Icon zeigt an, dass die Firewall aktiv ist.

Is your firewall configured for a previous/different network?
Ist die Firewall schon für ein früheres/anderes Netzwerk eingerichtet?

If so you may try to turn the firewall off, try to connect to the desired AccessPoint and, if connected, run firewall setup.
Falls ja kannst Du versuchen die Firewall auszuschalten, mit dem entsprechenden AccessPoint verbinden und, wenn verbunden, die Firewall für das neue Netzwerk einrichten.

thank you very much for your answer. It is really frustrating. Since my last reply most time with just "local access" (Zugriff nur lokal)... Wrote this message when it exceptionally worked, pressed the "send" button and ... I am a very patient person but ... that is to much.

Last try this night: I turned the firewall off and tried it again. The same result as before. Can´t connect to the internet. Normally when I connect my Laptop wireless to a router "directly" I do it with the firewall on, and in this case the renter of the flat get the connection from my laptop via his Fritzbox channel ("directly" - Heimnetzwerk) with the firewall on, so I don´t think that it is the firewall that causes the problem.

The renter also showed me what options his Fritzbox has for the guest account: 1. WPA2 (CCMP) and 2. WPA2 + WPA3. We tried both, but it made no difference. There are no other options. So what could it be?
And why does it work with vista???! Don´t wanna buy a Windows laptop

@xenialpupfan - When I had an ath5k eeepc I found the driver flaky. You may have missing firmware. Or you may simply need a ping lopp to keep your connection alive.
Please run the following in a terminal & post results:

lspci -nn | grep etwork

and then

dmesg | grep irmware

You could also (at own risk) try the .pet attached below, which keeps the connection up by pinging google every 30 sec.
Download, then install by clicking on it in ROX-Filer & then restart X.

When you first run whatever network connection Wizard.
Making the needed setup entries.
The firewall needs to be turned off.

After you get it all setup and working.
Enable the firewall.

Try this:
Turn the firewall off.

Use the Network Wizard.
A lot of steps, but if something does not work.
The step that has problems is a good clue as to what is wrong.

menu->Setup->Internet Connection Wizard->Wired or wireless LAN->Network Wizard

Network Wizard wireless connection steps.

1. Select Network Wizard
2. Select wlan0 (your network card may have a different description)
3. Select Wireless in the Configure wireless network box.
4. Select Scan and your ESSID should come up.
5. Select your ESSID and OK
6. Give a name to your profile. It should already be what you selected in step 5.
7. Encryption. Most people use WPA/TKIP - select it or WPA2.
8. A box will open for you to write the WPA password. It is called a Shared Key. Enter the password.
9. Leave the other boxes as they are. Rarely do these need adjustment.
9. Select Save
10. Select Use This Profile
11. A box will appear showing Puppy trying to connect
12. A box will come up “REPORT ON TEST 0f wlan0CONNECTION”
13. Select Auto DHCP in the Configure interface box and it will go through a handshake routine. and declare itself successful
14. Select done

If something does not work.

Also make sure your system's time zone setting is correct - if not, many website's certificates then act as if they are expired, and the webpage won't display.

I have a question about this connection process ...
Being Xenialpup, shouldn't it also have the option to connect also via frisbee? ...

I use another option very often, the connection via cellular using it as a wireless modem through USB as an alternative to the wireless card (to use and take advantage of the 5g band) and as both devices are relatively new, it is very rare that the connection fails. ..
For about two years I stopped using network wizard and simple network since with new modems / routers it has become difficult to connect to Wi-Fi and sometimes to LAN

I read the specifications of the mentioned modem and the guest option as I understand it should not be different at all from a direct connection but I have learned that the S.O. they tend to be very capricious and fail even when everything is in perfect condition

first of all: thank you very, very much for your support - even at Xmas.

Sorry for my late reply. After my last post the connection was interrupted and did not come back.
So sitting alone at the end of the world I search for my external hard drive in my stuff surrounding me and installed Vista Out of the Box, Service Pack 1, Service Pack 2 and the last available Qualcomm Atheros Driver. But it was of no avail. I was extremly frustrated. Fortunately I had saved a few films on that hard drive...

Next evening the renter of the flat - he and his wife had visited their daughter for a few days - knocked at my door and said, that he had bad news: no internet connection in the whole house. He had reseted the router 15 or 20 times but the connection - if it got one - still lasts a few minutes. (The same problem that I had when I arrived .) He had called the provider for a technician.

Yesterday the technician came and now it works without a problem. Do not know what was wrong.

But... First I got a connection just via Vista. Xenialpup refuses the connection. I did every step bigpup told me, but puppy did not want to connect.
Then I noticed that when I opened the „Internet Connection Wizard“ there are two other options beneath the „Simple Network Setup created by BarryK“ and I thought of PipzDexs suggestion with frisbee. If I understood his post right, he uses his mobile phone to connect to the www, but I don not have a mobile phone. But maybe the frisbee offered in the „Internet Connection Wizard“ will work to, I thought. I am always afraid trying things I do not know because a bad running system is better than a not running sytem.
The first try failed. It found no WLAN networks and the window suddenly closed. But the second try was sucessful.
You can‘t imagine how happy I was. My beloved puppy is back again.

Hatte früher mal das gleiche Problem (I had the same problem times ago)

Mein puppy damals war für mich recht neu, hatte aber als Verbinungsrogram
nicht den 'NetworkWizzard' sondern was Anderes voreingestellt.
(my puppy was at that time new for me, it had another Wizzard for Networkconnection as default)

Erst als ich auf den Neztwerkverwalter(NetworkWizzard) umgestellt hatte,
konnte ich erfolgreich auf das Gast-Wlan zugreifen.
(I only successed after changing to Networkwizzard)

Erinnere mich, daß ich dazu auch alte vorhandene Einstellungsprofile
löschen mußte, damit sich alles automatisch richtig eingestellt hat.
(I remember, that I had to delete older Networkprofiles in Networkwizzard,
so that it get the right parameters automatically)

Hoffe es hilft, wenn dein Internet wiedermal Kapriolen macht
