Hello,
When I travel far away, where I know I cannot secure my Acer computer, I travel with a very old netbook nobody will want to steal : Asus Eee PC 4G, RAM 512 Mo, HDD 4 Go. In this netbook I have a full install (raring 3.992). Everything worked fine severals years ago. But now, I hope to travel again, and I see, I need another thing that raring. So I tried BionicPup32.

I have just done another try : At home I use to work with xenial 32 with a computer Acer aspire 4 Gb RAM and 500 Gb HDD. Everything works fine in frugal install. I have, nearly a 3 Go pupsave. I tried to use this frugal install on the Asus Eee PC 4G, but I see, it does not work properly. May be because of very low RAM. May be it is the same problem with Bionic ? May be a full install should work better ?

Thank you

How do other bionic32 users watch youtube videos without a browser? I was using yt-viewer (or gtk-yt-viewer) 3.7.4 and it no longer plays youtube videos though it finds them. smtube latest for ubuntu requires Ubuntu 20 and 64-bit.

"Get-Web-Browser" works fine when used on a frugal install with pupsave - both ChromiumUBB and Firefox .sfs downloaded, installed and run successfully..........

gilles,

Asus Eee PC 4G, RAM 512 Mo

,
4GB of RAM is way more than enough to work well with a frugal install of Puppy.
Some features, are only provided by doing frugal installs.
A lot of improvement in speed, can be provided, by using the CPU Frequency scaling Tool and using performance setting.

Eee computers are kind of in their own world of computers.
There actually has been, several versions of Puppy, made just for these computers.
This is one:
https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... =97110&i=1
It is getting kind of old and not sure how well, new browsers are supported.
The specific model, of the Eee pc, is also a issue on what works.

Use this search site and do a search for Asus Eee pc
Select Puppy forum, in web source drop down menu, to search
http://puppylinux.us/psearch.html
This will provide a lot of hits, for topics in the old Puppy forum.
Something in one of those topics, should help you.

If you have specific issues with Bionicpup32 8.0 and your Asus Eee PC.
Start a separate topic about it.
Specific details.
You do what?
You see what?

The latest (june 2021) BionicPup32 finds no internet connection. I see alternating horizontal white and colored stripes overlay while loading X, and it is generic 1024x768 until I run the video wizard. I choose 1280x800 which works, but fbcon (in vt) displays at 680x480 (not working).

A version from March 13 2021 (or before) finds eth0 and wlan0 and they connect. Printer Setup is Unable to Connect, Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:631. I recall Precise Light having a similar problem, with a solution. But I would like to be able to use the newest BionicPup32 with correct video and network connections.

How do I fix these two problems?

I have not tried any intermediate versions of BionicPup32.

Computer is a DELL B130 from 2005 that was unusable with older puppies (Tahr, Precise Light), and barely usable with Jessie and it is 32-bit. Problems included lack of internet, lack of fbcon, lack of mouse, dead Alt keys (Jessie), freezing, etc. They won't run latest Palemoon 32-bit.

The laptop has a matte screen and nice keyboard and trackpad.

I asked earlier:

How do other bionic32 users watch youtube videos without a browser? I was using yt-viewer (or gtk-yt-viewer) 3.7.4 and it no longer plays youtube videos though it finds them. smtube latest for ubuntu requires Ubuntu 20 and 64-bit.

---

I can list videos but not watch them. I get an error message with 3.7.6 yt-viewer that I need parent.pm. Internet research says I should install perl-parent module. PPM does not offer it. I found it for 64-bit rpm. Are perl modules specific to 32 or 64 bit systems? This laptop is not fast enough to watch youtube in a browser also it is short on RAM (1GB max). 2005.

A temporary solution is my Droid MAXX with HDMI output to a VGA monitor via an adapter.

Focalpup (Fossa) 64-bit requires 2GB RAM. I will try 32-bit version.

"Printer Setup is Unable to Connect, Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:631."
I needed to start cupsd manually for it to work. I may have messed up something. It works on my 2004 DELL 600M.

I got the rpm file for perl-parent and could not extract it with rpm2cpio or Uextract. Something about missing gzip/bzip2 etc. I converted it to tgz online and put the parent.pm file into the youtube-viewer directory I got from unpackaging a pet, and now it wants if.pm. Can I simply install a large perl package?.

Often on Puppy perl and perl-base show as 'already-installed' in PPM, but I found that (re)installing these makes it install the "full" packages (probably containing also if.pm, I guess).

I installed the full perl-base and then also perl 5_32 with ppm and now it no longer asks for If.pm (which I had installed already) or Readline.pm but it wants Functions.pm. Install File::Spec::Functions.
This is in FocalPup32, which had perl 5_30. I updated PPM database first.

It can be a puzzle to get the right dependencies (perl-modules) for youtube-viewer.

That it doesn't play videos may be because youtube-dl is not installed or not up to date. And do you have mpv ? (I think mpv is the most suitable, although newer mplayer versions can also 'work' together with youtube-dl).

I had youtube-dl working with yt-viewer until not long ago, and a 17MB mplayer (in focal32). The problem was perl.

youtube-dl -U updates it.

I search with lynx in X terminal (which I compiled a while ago - http://keesan.freeshell.org/puppy), cutting and pasting (Alt-F C or P) to youtube-dl URL (paste the URL) in X terminal.

From youtube I got an mp4 file, and from vimeo I think an mkv file, both of which mplayer played but the mkv without sound.
1920x1060 scales to 1280x720 and plays out of synch at 1.4GHz with 1GB RAM and tells me my computer is too slow.
-hardframedrop does not help.

I have some mplayers that play with fbdev (no X needed) which should save CPU and RAM. This laptop can do 480p.

youtube-dl -F lists available resolutions, youtube-dl -f 22 chooses resolution 22 (360p) but it displays full screen 1280x800.

This 2005 B130 Dell has lovely matte screen and loud clear sound.

Even 360p is painfully slow in Palemoon even to get started, with two VRBO ads before a 15 sec video on mason bees.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It got me faster to the point where I gave up on perl.

@sindi

The following works for me on UpupBionic32 to make (gtk-)youtube-viewer run:

Install older v3.5.3 (contains dependencies, perl-modules), earlier shared on the old forum https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 9#p1009159 :
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/nhd ... 6.pet?dl=1
Then upgrade to v3.7.6-2: see also https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 6#p1059276
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/fo0 ... h.pet?dl=1
Install mpv (if not already installed), small package here from jlst:
https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 32#p859332
EDIT: got a complaint from mpv that libva1 was missing, here's a mpv pet that includes libva1:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/myk ... e.pet?dl=1
(or install the pet from jlst above and install libva1 from PPM)

If needed run GTK-Youtube-updater from menu (should update youtube-dl) and running (gtk-)youtube-viewer should work OK.

Bionic32 plays youtube videos with a standalone yt-viewer-374-pkg.tar.gz (which I keep at https://keesan.freeshell.org/puppy).
It played two of three test videos which is probably why I stopped using it. I can use youtube-dl directly if needed.

I followed instructions to install the pet for 3.5.3 (amd64). I think it played a video.
After installing 3.7.6_2 noarch pet it does NOT play. Run from CLI, youtube-viewer Cannot 'initialize' in Term::Readline::Gnu ..... line 98.
gtk-youtube-viewer and gtk2-youtube-viewer cannot load Glib.so -- wrong ELF class. There is a Glib.so in perl.

Perl5.26.1. 3.7.4 has 5.20.

Not sure if I understand well, you installed an amd64 pet on 32-bit Bionic ? Needs to be the i386 pet. (dropbox link in my above post)

I uninstalled 3.5.3 amd64 and installed i386. Intel CPU and video on my laptop.
I uninstalled 3.7.6 and reinstalled it.
No more error messages, but it will not play the video that 3.7.4 does play.
Thanks for your persistence.

Along the way I discovered cups was unchecked in the older bionic32 and I fixed that (it will now print) and unchecked a few things I do not use.
The newer bionic32 was missing zdrv and adding it fixed it problems with fbcon and eth0 and wlan0.
I will attempt to remove libxul.so since Palemoon has a newer version twice the size and I can use the RAM.
Also I do not use most of the files in adrv (firmware). A much older kernel may also work for my hardware except maybe the USB flash drives.

What advantage does focal32 have over bionic32 other than longevity?

I installed the two versions of youtube-viewer 3.7.6 (older i386 one first) in FocalPup32 (upupff+d) and it will not play. Cannot find Readline.pm.
I uninstalled the newer perl and perl-base 5.32 because it could not find perl. I uninstalled youtube-viewers and reinstalled. It still will not work.

I played several videos with the standalone 3.7.4 package. No sound. Sound wizard was set to auto mute. I changed it. Now the mixer does not work in sound setup. Standard Intel sound. Set to 75%. Alsamixer was set to Master very low and PCM and LineOut 100% so I adjusted them to normal (just before the red shows above the white) and it still does not play.

Test sound played. Aplay plays a wav file. Youtube videos play without sound. What stupid thing did I do this time?

Is FocalPup 32 not yet official?

FocalPup32 (UPupFF+D) is more modern / up-to-date than BionicPup32 (UPupBB) but is also not 100% Ubuntu - has some 32-bit Debian components that are no longer in Ubuntu repos.

FocalPup32 is not official as the build "recipe" is not part of Woof-CE - it is however linked on the website download page:

The Bionic pet cannot work on Fossa, it's made to work only on Bionic.

I've compiled Qtractor 0.9.15 in two different versions for BionicPup32.
One version comes with VST3 enabled.
There's .deb and .pet pakcages.

Edit:

I've uploaded also QJackCtl 0.5.5 compiled for BionicPup32.

How do I transfer files with bionicpup32 via USB cable from Galaxy S III (Virgin Mobile) to my laptop computer? It is not recognized as a PTP camera, go-mtpfs cannot find an MTP device, and USB Mass Storage is not available except with an apk that requires root. The various wifi file transfer methods appear to be only for sending to other phones. I have been emailing photos to my computer rather than putting the microSD card into a card reader. Do I need an additional module/driver for MTP or PTP? Another solution is to use an Android 2.3 phone with UMS instead. I am sticking with Bionic32 instead of Focal32 because I got yt-viewer working with it (standalone) with sound.

I recommend posting this as a new thread.

The distro announcement posts are more about the distro itself and less on how to accomplish a non-distro-specific task in them.

Excellent idea, which led me to test the same phone with Tahrpup and Focal32, with the same result. My other Galaxy III (a cracked-screen Verizon) works as expected with the same cable, so presumably the USB port has a problem. The phone came from a friend 'working' and will be used to watch Youtube instead of for USB file transfer. Bionicpup32 has the required mtp files already.

I updated Bionicpup32 upupbb by downloading the latest version,
unpackaging the .iso file:
mount -o loop *.iso /mnt/cdrom
and copying the .puppy*sfs file to the directory containing the original .sfs file (which I backed up under a different name just in case).
I think I used a different version of linux to do this.
cd to the directory with bionic32
mv puppy*sfs puppy.sfs-old
cp /mnt/cdrom/puppy*sfs .
umount /mnt/cdrom
reboot

Hi @sindi
It strikes me that bionicpup32 which you have installed does not have this program available ...
however I have this pet that I had previously extracted from this same puppy (Bionicpup32) for other personal purposes
I hope this pet solves your problem

I believe it is a frugal install, on an internal HD.

Another problem I am having right now is with the ydrv.sfs. If I install it I get this error message at startup:

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit was not provided by any .service files

Furthermore, the destop manager is reported as not active and the entry in the Setup menu that allowed me to switch between lxde and jwm is gone.

I have BionicPup32-8.0+21 installed on an old laptop and I want to update it to the lastest version. My noob question is, What is the recommended way to do this? Thanks in advance.

@ripper10
More important info - what ydrv???

I recommend you:
a. download and keep for future reference the base +0 iso: https://sourceforge.net/projects/zestyp ... o/download
b. down the +28 delta: https://sourceforge.net/projects/zestyp ... a/download
c. put both into the same directory and click on the delta to create the +28 .iso
d. click on the +28 .iso to mount and open it
e. copy the new +28 puppy_upupbb_19.03.sfs into your frugal install directory
f. reboot

You can also reach the update repo via Menu - System -> System Updates

It is the latest ydrv for bionic. The exact file name is ydrv_upupbb_19.03.sfs.
I download everything from the links you post in this thread.
Another question, The adrv, fdrv and zdrv aren't updated with new versions?
