Roxfiler file manager tips

Find files in Rox

Written by smokey01

Let's assume you have a directory with thousands of files. Now in this directory you know you have a few .jpg files but you can't remember what the filenames are. A quick way to find them:

1. Press the period key (full stop).

2. At the bottom of the Rox dialog an input field just opened, type *.jpg

3. Notice all of the .jpg files are now selected.

If you like, you could move, copy or delete them.

To get rid of the input field press the ESC key.

Do remember to unselect the files by clicking in the white space when the cursor changes to an arrow. If the cursor is a finger it will likely open the selected files. Cursor shapes may differ between distros.

This is not what I expected :o

Open a terminal

Written by smokey01

Navigating in a terminal can be quite challenging for many people so why not use Rox.

Navigate to the directory where you want to be then press the ` key. This will open a terminal in the current directory.

Press the ` (backtick key), the one with the red border.

This is the US Keyboard layout. It may be different for other countries.

Open a directory in a new Rox window

Click on the directories with the middle mouse button or scroll wheel.
This will open a new Rox window in that directory.
In other words you will now have two Rox windows open.
so you can drag and drop files between them.

Bookmarks

Another handy tool in Rox is bookmarks. If you have various locations that you visit regularly then it's probably worth book marking them. I'm a shocker, I always seem to be digging my way through the file system looking for something.

Note the red square on the Rox toolbar image below.

just click it and Add New Bookmark and they will all be there when you need them.

Instead of adding new bookmarks by way of the add bookmarks function, one can edit (right-click and open as text) the Bookmarks.xml file in /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer. This will give you more freedom of how you want your bookmarks to appear. For instance, by adding some spaces in the right places you can make a "treeview". See my post here, to see how mine looks: viewtopic.php?p=18178#p18178

Doesn't require keypad. Works also with numbers in keyboard top row.

@bigpup I suggest that you move this topic to the "File Management" subsection, otherwise the "HOW-TO Section" might get messy, like in the good old days ;)

Maybe faster for you, but for me and probably many others it's slower. I not only tried it, I use it for years, have posted some threads in the old Murga forum explaining ROX-Filer's group selection and eventually created a comprehensive (and now outdated) bookmarks tool to make this nice feature more accessible. Thanks for mentioning this feature and thanks for reading the manual

Is there a way to navigate through the pane with the keyboard? Sometimes mouse navigation is sloppy because puppy is so damn fast, especially on a laptop pad.

Do you mean navigation in Rox? The yellow table in this link could help

Yes, that's what I mean. That's a big help. But for some reason my arrow keys don't do anything on either of my laptops. OH WAIT! I'm just now realizing that the theme I have installed must be hiding the cursor, because if I use the arrow keys and hit the space bar, it selects the files. WOOPS.

One point overlooked is font selection. The font chosen should look clear and not ambiguous.
Examples include lower case "l" and number "1", upper case "O" and number "0", some fonts squeeze letters"rn" into letter "m". In most cases a monospace font clears all this up, or a font like monaco ttf. OT/ these considerations apply to Geany, or other terminal fonts. /OT
