Latest Browser Pets for Precise?

Post by marley »

Hi, I'm running Precise and have been using PaleMoon browser but Youtube says it's not supported and the chrome pet I have (google-chrome 48) isn't uptodate according to youtube - so I was wondering what is the latest pet for Precise or how does one download a linux version of an uptodate browser suitable for youtube accounts and 'compile' it or whatever?

I've downloaded bunches of files for browsers before but I am at a loss as to what to do from there. Any help pointing me in the right direction is greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Hallo, marley.

Now. I appreciate you've probably got Precise set-up just to your liking, and understandably don't want to disturb your set-up. That's fine; many of us are of similar mind.

Question; would you be averse to running a second, more 'modern' Puppy, primarily to obtain access to an up-to-date browser? I ask because Precise is getting very hard to find a functioning modern browser for; you have to bear in mind that most of the included dependencies are now well over 8 years old, and in tech terms that's like dinosaur status.

Yes, you can add newer dependencies, but they then want other, newer deps.....and further down the road, your glibc is then too old, AND your libstdc++, and a bucket of other core dependencies. You end up essentially re-building it into a more modern Pup, so why not just go with a new one to start with?

Is your machine capable of running a 64-bit version? If not, you might like to take a look at jrb's Precise-light; it's had a lot of stuff 'uprated' & brought more up-to-date:-

------------------------------------------------

If you can, though, a 64-bit Puppy just makes more sense, since everything is getting to be built as 64-bit ONLY nowadays. That's just the direction things are headed-in, I'm afraid.

Can you give us some idea of what your hardware specs are.....CPU, amount of RAM, storage, graphics (integrated OR a separate card, it doesn't matter), that kind of thing? It'll give us a better idea of what to recommend as your best course of action, but I suspect you'll be looking at a newer Puppy of some kind.

EDIT:- Hang about, I've just had a thought. What version of Pale Moon are you on? If it's still the 27-series, the updater for these no longer works. You'll need a modern, 28-series for that....

marley,

Welcome to Puppy Land!
AS a new user of this forum and maybe Puppy Linux.
Additional Software section is for people to post actual software packages for others to download and use.
Software you have compiled for Puppy, developed, or know to work in Puppy Linux.

It is not the place to post questions.

The forum has a section for beginners to ask questions, post about problems, etc.......
Beginners Help section.

Also, it greatly helps us all if you provide some basic info.
Answer these questions.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=218

We the users of this forum have much control over keeping some order to it.
If you post in beginners help.
That already tells us you know little about Puppy.
We know we need to over explain stuff, so you will understand.

We are Puppy!
Resistance is futile!

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

@bigpup :-

I think you'll find Marley's been part of the community about the same length of time I have. I can't bring his profile up 'cos the old Forum won't let you do that nowadays.....log-in is required for that, and jamesbond disabled that function.

Here's one of his threads from Murga-Linux:-

He's, er, not QUITE as prolific as yours truly..! :D

If true, should know to not post topics asking questions, in this section of the forum.
Should also know that saying you run Precise is telling us nothing very useful.
There are about 4 or 5 versions of Precise and even the specific version number is important.
Is it the updated Precise, the old original precise, Precise the light version, etc.....

If you have to use Precise.
This is one you may really want to be using.
