Save process very slow

Post by oliverjames »

Having chosen many years ago to travel to friends and family with Linux on an external ssd I recently taken to down-sizing the external device to a 65 Gb usb key containing Daedalus 6.6.4. This is a very convenient solution as the usb key is clipped to my key fob and hence travel prep is further simplified.

However, the only issue is that the "Save" function is very long (about 5 minutes at last count) even with minimal changes to personal files.

Can you please suggest how I can speed up the save process.

Thank you.

You can see in /mnt/.easy_rw all the files that will merged during the saving

It could be that your usb key has very slow write speed.

Not only a slow write speed...65Gb is kind of an unusual size??? Is the key from a reputable brand? If not, it could
be one of those "fake" USB3 keys that are really only USB1 or 2! And the size may be a LOT smaller...talking less
than 4 Gb! Something to check anyway.

I just had a 96G save folder get reduce by 78G by deleting some server logs. A set of logs brought the save folder way way down in size and duplicate file check might find more that can be trimmed.

Thank you for your replies. I ran a benchmark test on the usb key - Kingston 62 Gb by the way, my mistake - and then I repeated the test on other usb keys; most informative.

Then I ran the same test on external SSDs from Samsung and from Sandisk. The Sandisk is very old but appears to be of solid construction, the Kinston is probably about 10 years old, and the Verbatim, about 5 years old. I note that the read write characteristics vary a lot.

(Also discovered that the forum site doesn't allow multiple file selection/upload.)

The JMicron interface is the same in both cases. The Samsung disk is quite old (circa 10 yrs) whereas the Sandisk is more recent.

So it looks as though I should be using this test to evaluate the health of my disks.

Having received a new usb key (Sandisk Extreme Pro) that has a far higher write speed, the save process is no longer slow.
