GRAMPS (genealogy) dependency errors running installed from ppm

Post by houndstooth »

My goal is to run GRAMPS by app container package. It appears to only exist FlatPak or here by .sfs for Jammy (I've tried running it in Fossa w/no luck).

Before making a Fossa .sfs I tried .deb installation. It runs with these three errors:

gramps-error1.png
gramps-error1.png (30.81 KiB) Viewed 226 times
gramps-error2.png
gramps-error2.png (32.76 KiB) Viewed 226 times

Is there a reason missing packages are not installed with the download?

Ubuntu will run normally installed yet no .sfs support (I'm more of an AppImage user out of Puppy).

Start using JammyPup? FlatPaks in Ubuntu?

EasyOS Daedalus-series can install from the Devuan/Debian Daedalus/Bookworm package repos, and I see running PKGget (our replacement for ppm) that it will likely have the same problem that you have reported of missing dependencies.

However, EasyOS has Flapi, a flatpak manager, and I installed GRAMPS, and it looks to be working.

Note, Flapi installs flatpaks to run as their own user, so GRAMPS has installed to run as user "gramps".
This runs it in an isolated environment, and it can only write to /home/gramps or in /files
There is also /files/apps/gramps which is private and other installed flatpaks and appimages cannot even see into it.

This is a reasonably secure alternative to containers.

Not just flapaks and appimages, other apps such as the browser run as their own user.

Ha ha, sometimes I cannot resist doing a promotion for EasyOS!

Their Github page has a full list of requirements:

Flapi reads promising. The catalysts for OS adoption are friendliness & DE (eg, XFCE), though I'm aware technical folks have different priorities.

I can't spend more time on technical than the project (genealogy), so Windows is an option despite the static I see them doing these days to control the software, eg, registering with an Internet connection, trial features, timing out & such. 'Re-register this free software in 6 months.' No thanks!

None of my current paths of least resistance are Puppy:

  • checking Family Tree Builder out of Israel

  • installed overhead in Ubuntu

  • EasyOS Flapi FlatPak

Here is an early blog post in 2023 about Flapi:

A slightly later post in 2023, introducing customization:
