How to install Chromium on Slacko 6.3.2?

I haven't had luck getting any version of Chromium on Slacko6.

Mainline Slacko 6.3.2 is missing basic apps like multiple monitor control and the task manager, but they're installable.

Optimistically I'm thinking Chromium just needs libraries and dependencies.

Is it possible to install, for example, Chromium 65? (Bionic-era repository)

Would it be worthwhile or should I just give up on the older os I really like?

IF you're interested, you're looking at Iron v84. I know you don't particularly like 'new'(-ish) browsers, but it's worth a try; many Puppians think quite highly of Iron, 'cos it's the best way to run a Chrome/Chromium 'lookalike' without too much hassle.

I assume you're familiar with the principle behind these? Download; unzip; place wherever you want.....preferably, outside the save-file/folder. Click to enter; click 'LAUNCH' to fire it up.

Initially, I would suggest opening a terminal beside the LAUNCH script, and entering

Code: Select all

./LAUNCH

.....which will tell you what, if anything, is missing. The Slackos are notorious for having a rather bare cupboard where libs, etc., are concerned. You're almost certain to want a newer version of libpng, for instance, though if you've been running that older Chrome you should at least have libgconf installed.

Entirely up to you, of course. Just a thought.

Yes and No.

Some browsers I only use for specific purposes.

This relates to recent posting with @bigpup. For several weeks I've been booting almost exclusively live sessions. That started from compromises with pupsaves. Now realizing live compromises, I'm leaning towards pupsaves again.

Yet logging into Facebook on a frugal install I was deluged with ads.

It could be coincidental timing, but it also could be browser data stored in my pupsave.

When everything evaporates in ram each session, that question is diminished.

For this reason I would never say, login into Facebook in Firefox. I buy stuff in Firefox (recently art supplies for one special teenager). Therefore the browser matters with some flexiblity.

The offline Chrome I use is from Slimjet, which touts maintained 32bit compatibility. Alas, I don't see Slimjet in our repositories and it doesn't run from their site binaries.

Iron 84 could be useful if it you can attest to what it runs on. Gorilla to Xenial isn't going to be much advantage, but Tahr and Slacko6 would be.

The Chromium 56 from my last post runs but crashes.

A browser like 50-era Chrome onward that isn't going to run like a dog on its chain is the goal.

chromium 65 can be installed from the PPM and run on tahrpup. a few things need updating though.
first off update the PPM
then install chromium
then in the findbox type libnss3 and reinstall the already installed packages at the end of the list to update them
do the same for libnspr4

@666philb that will be great if it runs. Same for Slacko 6.3.2?

Chromium 37 runs in Tahr from .deb, but on Slacko it only installs.

EDIT: Slacko only maintains Chrome 46, pre- and post-repository update, so my only guess would be if Alien Bob's Chromium 56 is good enough for a pre-installed version.

@peebee right now PPM is hung trying to install 65.

Foreground:

I updated the Tahr PPM, then tried to install 65 from .deb. 47 is in the PPM.

That failed. So I installed 49 from .deb. That installed.

After installing 49, I see 65 in the PPM, so I installed from there. Those dependencies went green "success", but the main 65 package itself has hung the PPM and was reported a red failure. It's still trying to install the main package as I type.

Per your original instructions, I didn't know if it mattered what version of Chromium I was to install or if it matters if it's from .deb or the PPM.

If one installs whatever version the PPM first has available after update, it won't be 65 unless I'm using a newer Ubuntu version repository.

I'm in.

If we're stable (no crashing) I'll count a success.

If there's any hope for Slacko6 & all the pretty WMs, that will be neat.

Dous ublock block streaming video on media outlet pages? That would be really useful.

Looks like your Lx page is for 64. Lots of Chromium there and that pepper is really popular.

I'm still in 32. You have empty Arch and Debian 32 folders. My 64 machine is new enough to not bother with Puppy 6x so there are different challenges.

I think Firefox is Slacko default & I haven't had much problem there either, but generally more is merrier with available browsers.

Chromium derivatives after the end of Chrome32 are the goal.

Slacko runs the last Chrome & Firefox Light from the Lx puplets. New Pale Moon is good but needs a Slacko Chromium-based cousin.

Tahrpup is the oldest this will run in, definitely.

I can corroborate that, for the simple reason that one of my "kennel-mates" is Slacko 5.7.1 from Sailor Enceladus.....his take on 01Micko's classic Slacko 570. Now, any Iron newer than v58 will NOT run natively in these 5-series Slackos. However, I have it running in 571 by the simple expedient of running it from a chrooted Tahrpup 'jail'.....from where it runs sweetly.

All thanks to watchdog, who demonstrated this way of running things when darry19662018 was perfecting his upgraded "Phoenix" re-spin on Puppy 431, around 18 months hence.

To prove my point, I'm adding this postscript, right now, from Iron v84 'portable' running in a pristine, bog-standard 32-bit Tahrpup 605 on 'bare metal'.....which took all of 2 minutes to set-up and boot. No additions of any kind needed; Tahrpup contains appropriate versions of libgconf & libpng, and the portable contains GTK-3.0 and the NSS libraries.

My take is you have luck running recent Iron on Tahr and Slacko5 is a hack for 50s era. Noted.

I'm still pondering the possibilities.

I like live browser installs but that's all ram limiting it for other uses, so I think my fate is a pupsave set to never save with cleared browser user data.

Otherwise the drive here is less the browser than the type of browser on Slacko6.

It's almost as if with all this expert knowledge on the forum, Chromium isn't compatible with Slackware 14.1.

Slackware has the WMs.

Ubuntu supports the browsers.

Ne'er the twain shall meet.

Think of me as a sophisticated lay user. I want a non-technical, aesthetic/user-friendly windows manager, broad browser compatibility, and conservative resource demands.

XFCE Ubuntu Puppy is the strongest pull, but on a 32 machine the closest I see custom-shop is LxPupXenial.
