Linux and especially OS running as root are malware?

Post by lobster »

Starting on January 19, 2025 Facebook's internal policy makers decided that Linux is malware and labelled groups associated with Linux as being "cybersecurity threats". Any posts mentioning DistroWatch and multiple groups associated with Linux and Linux discussions have either been shut down or had many of their posts removed.

Even though I am mostly using another Linux and Mastodon and Fediverse alternatives. I wonder if reality is no longer required?

How long will we be allowed to continue?

US companies have a new MANdate which has caused a change in the rules.

We are heading toward a Brave New World!

Expect, information silos to become dominant in the world and Nationalism to expand across the pond to affect everyone deemed unworthy.

SAD to say as I'm watching something I wish wasn't occurring. Unfortunately, there is no off-ramp and the speed is ever-increasing into an abyss.

I am, now, too old to be an active participant for change. And, trying to arouse multiple groups to an upcoming abyss over the past dozen years was too little, too late with a perception by many that it could not happen.

It did!

Strange to see that report. The Puppy Linux Users Group on Facebook is working fine:

https://facebook.com/groups/105376249522117

Maybe it's just the other linuxes that aren't as good as Puppy....? :)

As above, Puppy linux user group is working fine, but, I tried posting a link to distrowatch, and an immediate rejection for "going against our community standards".

I put in a claim to say that's not right, which probably won't go anywhere. I would love to know what's the cause of this flagging. Hopefully an AI or similar blip, but you never know...

Well, honestly. If ya spend all your time on FaceBook - or "Meta" as I believe it's now called - what DO you expect..?

Never had the time of day for social media. It's nowt but a placebo for the masses...summat to keep 'em quiet, and distract them from what's really going on in the background. You "reap what you sow"...

The common practice today of perpetually pointing out how Big Tech/Social Media are screwing us, yet continuing to use their frameworks is obviously not going to change a thing.

The only recourse is to divorce oneself as much as possible from using any of their "services." All of them: facebook/instagram/X/amazon/ebay/paypal/google/microsoft/mac/etc....

Almost impossible, I know. But you have to start somewhere. A phone that doesn't log in to google or mac. search aggregators instead of their websites. It's often a huge inconvenience. My wife is always asking me why I have to map and print directions from open maps when I leave for somewhere unfamiliar, because I don't have google-maps installed on my phone. My answer:is simply: "Screw them, that's why."

They can find out where I went through all their other data points, sure, but I'm not simply going to consent to handing it over willingly. Participating only encourages it, gives them the green light.

I also choose to tell some of my employers that I'm not able or willing to access their online collaborative services. If they like my performance enough, they will work with me. If they insist I do it their way, I look for other work. Of course I'm not a corporate guy by temperament and design.

All of this working against the grain apparently will now include the simple choice of using linux. It looks like everything we do online will soon need to use "official" browsers running on "approved" OS's,

Some of us have been practicing going off-line some day, because honestly it will probably come down to that. It will suck, yes. But I'm determined to still have a conscience when it's over, maybe limited access to most everything, but I won't be gas-lit. Or totally lost as to how to keep functioning when that day comes.

the ones that claim linux is malware are the actual malware tbh. i know because ive used both.
as we say here in spain, "piensa el ladrón que todos son de su condición".
someone who does something is most likely to accuse others of doing the same and not accept he also does that.

Heh. IE6 on Windows '98, anyone? Sounds VERY "deja-vu", don't it?

(Been there, done that. *yawn* Bo-ringggg.....)

The laughable thing is, you challenge Zuckerberg on what OS the FaceBook/Meta servers are actually running on, he'll probably say MyCrudSoft's Azure......blissfully unaware that even M$ run Azure on Linux. Ya don't think they're daft enough to run their own cloud on Windows, do ya? Even if they were to manage to prevent every desktop Linux user in the world from using their OS, it wouldn't even make a scratch in the usage figures. Because Linux runs just about everything in the cloud, the IoT, most of the world's supercomputers, etc, etc. It even runs the International Space Station and most of NASA's rockets.....

Every other day, 2 hours of updates.....and another half-hour of 'We're just collecting some data before Windows restarts'. Yeah, riiiiight. I doubt Azure clients would put up with that for very long..!!

Markie-boy has been spending too much time in his own Metaverse, methinks.....with his head up his own backside. He's losing touch with reality! Image

distrowatch refuses to connect with chromium-ungoogled here. firefox ok
whats up with that?

to be fair, distrowatch is not the only site that refuses connections from chromium-ungoogled.

My answer:is simply: "Screw them, that's why."

thats typically my response also, but I didnt expect it from a linux supporting site

Privacy and security was a buzzword we, all of us, have commonly thrown around for over 2 decades. Its meaning from year to year changes as more and more information surfaces in the exploitation of technology and our world in general.

Today, I found this, and thought of this thread.

You, too, may find this of interest.

This FaceBook Linux thing is supposed to be fixed now on FaceBook.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Basically it is reaching a riduculous level of data scraping and sharing to feed the
AI monster money bubble being created.

I use social media (mastodon) and decentralised software
services on private servers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse
For example https://pixey.org for an instagram type service

...and anything that does not encourage the nonsense
of global capitiualization of people, software and mind sets
