Betterbird - a more secure, 64-bit only 'soft' fork of the Thunderbird mail client.....in portable format

Post by mikewalsh »

Evening, gang.

I'm really quite pleased to be able to offer this one. A bunch of us were discussing it over at Linux.org this morning, and I thought it sounded interesting enough to take a closer look at, so.....I did.

Betterbird email client

The project page can be found here:-

https://www.betterbird.eu/

Betterbird is, apparently, supposed to be a more optimized, better-configured & secure version of Thunderbird. Somewhat along the lines of LibreWolf; this is to T-Bird very much as LibreWolf is to Firefox. That's the claim, anyway.

The download link is not easy to locate. it's buried away in the depths of an entire gaggle of versions built for a whole assortment of different Windows builds. Even the MacOS build is almost impossible to locate... However, it's well worth the search.

This is based around the current ESR build of Thunderbird, presently @ v128.

=============================================

I've packaged it in portable format, using Thunderbird-portable as a template.....in all honesty, the transformation was relatively painless, so didn't take half as long as I'd feared. It seems faster & more responsive than Thunderbird. Me, I like it.

So; if anybody's interested in taking a look at this 'secure' version of T-Bird, y'all can find it at my Google Drive, here:- https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

============================================

As usual:-

  • Download

  • Unzip

  • Place the portable directory anywhere you want.....though preferably, outside the 'save' is best

  • Click to enter

  • Click 'LAUNCH' to fire it up

The ever-present MenuAdd/MenuRemove scripts are available as always, if required. IF you want to move the portable while a MenuEntry is set, please peruse the 'MenuReadMe' before doing so. This also has scripts to add/remove a home-brewed 'tray-launcher' (a more basic version of the old FireTray extension).

Feedback would be appreciated. I may keep on top of this one as successive new ESR builds appear, IF enough people are interested. I've yet to ascertain whether this keeps up with interim updates. We shall see...

Anyway; see what y'all think of it. Enjoy!

Mike. ;)
