Addition to original forum structure thread

Post by amethyst »

Since the original thread is now locked....I would like to know if the Active Topics section can be divided into posts concerning specific sections only. I start the Forum directly with the Active Topics link. I would like a direct link that will only show me the active topics for The Puppy Linux Main section for example.

We can get close to that presently by clicking the "PUPPY LINUX MAIN" link at top of the Puppy forum section, you can then add this link to your bookmarks/favorites/whatever your browser chooses to call them. See what you think viewforum.php?f=177

PS...the same can be done for all the other forum sections! Like "DEBIAN DOG MAIN" just click on the link viewforum.php?f=227

I have this link in my browser: search.php?search_id=active_topics. Instead I want the link to land on that page but ONLY show the active Puppy topics (in other words ONLY for the active topics in the Puppy Linux Main Section).

Though this page presents an "ACTIVE TOPICS" section at the bottom, it appears that the really new posts can only be found in "LAST POSTS" columns of the individual Subforum sections above. This means that the user has to eyeball through all the subsections to find the newest posts. Ideally the "ACTIVE TOPICS" section would start with the very latest post, even if that means that this post appears also in the subsections. This would make it similar to the "Active topics" choice in the Quick links.

I think what the OP is after is this: search.php?&fid[]=177&search_id=active_topics
These are Active topics only of the Puppy Linux Main forum. Could the "ACTIVE TOPICS" section mentioned above may be replaced by this list? I would find this more useful.

Personally I use an even more customized Active topics list as my main bookmark: search.php?st=14&fid[]=177&fid[]=53&fid ... ive_topics
This shows Active topics for 3 fora:
- Puppy Linux main
- Programming
- For Older Low Powered Computers
It also covers posts of the last 2 weeks instead the current default of 1 week

Mochi, both of your links take me to the same page result I get when I use the "Quick links" menu of the forum index page, right underneath
the forum icon and header. I use that link often!

Another area that needs attention is the "Topics list" link at the top of the forum. Currently it's rather sparse, as there have been numerous additions over the years.

Content and number of topics are different! For example this topic is not included.

The Topics index list is automatically updated. No intervention needed. I will double check that auto index is enabled on these sections. I only have several actually using it.

mochi,
how do you construct or find the links you use?

Analyzing the search parameter of a "normal" search gives me the names of the parameters understood by the search engine. Then I try to combine fhem for customized searches. Doesn't always succeed, but often it does.

For my personal search pattern (last link in my post) I found that st is the time span in days and fid[] is the forum id (which my browser reveals when hovering over a forum title). This allows to construct the URL like this:
https://forum.puppylinux.com/search.php?st=14&fid[]=177&fid[]=53&fid[]=218&search_id=active_topics

This would list all unanswered topics of the Programming forum:
https://forum.puppylinux.com/search.php?fid[]=53&search_id=unanswered

And this lists all threads started by williwaw ;) :
https://forum.puppylinux.com/search.php?author=williwaw&sr=topics&sf=firstpost

very nice work. I sometimes wish the advanced search options were more complete
