How is that possible?

/mnt/home/ seems to be the mount point for the file system that contains the save folder.
/mnt/home/ is probably a symlink.
/mnt/home/ would have been setup when the OS booted.

/mnt/sde2/ seems to be a mount point for the file system in /dev/sde2

Why do you think that /mnt/sde2/ is empty?

If the FS in /dev/sde2/ is mounted on /mnt/home/
and If the FS in /dev/sde2/ is also mounted on /mnt/sde2/
then the file systems will be exact duplicates.

If files were copied before to the FS on /dev/sde2
they will still be there, of course.

Sometimes, a USB flash drive will not have as much space as advertised.
E.G. a drive may seem to be a 64G drive but is really a 32G drive.
The second half of the drive is just a mirror of the first half.
I think Barry Kauler wrote a program to detect such fakes.

Typical error messages when the target FS mounted on /mnt/sde2 (a mounted USB stick?) is FAT formatted. Your file names contain colons, which are are not allowed in FAT file names

What is the result of typing mount in a terminal?

I partitioned and formatted the USB drive and figured I could just copy files from another USB, but is was way too slow. I stopped the copy process and deleted the files already copied so I could start over. I then did the same copy procedure from my internal hdd, and that is when I got the message about overwriting. How can a file that is deleted be overwritten (unless it was a secret hidden file)?
I presume delete works on all files, including hidden and system files, is that correct?

I was informed that files can be copied from one drive to another even if they are different formats, but that is apparently incorrect. I can see now that the other copy errors are because I tried to copy from ext3 to fat32. I get a lot of correct information in this forum, but unfortunately, I do sometimes get incorrect information. This is confusing for me. The USB drive in question has switched to sdd (they switch around a lot). I re-partitioned and formatted the drive so the sdd1 is fat 32 for the boot files, sdd2 is for the OS (bookworm), and sdd3 is for apps (both sdd2 and sdd3 are ext3). I installed bookworm using frugal install, and used grub2config to write to boot files to sdd1. Haven't tried it yet.

Apparently, the fraud is widespread regarding thumb drives. See link below. Unfortunately, the program on that site is Windows only.

If at the time you did the copying, sdd2 was sde2 as you say, then (from your mount output above) you tried to copy from /mnt/home to ext3 filesystem (not fat32), is that right ?
(/dev/sdd2 on /mnt/sdd2 type ext3 (rw,relatime))

edit; /mnt/home is a symlink to a mounted partition, which one ? Please post output of readlink -f /mnt/home .

If at the time you did the copying, sdd2 was sde2 as you say, then (from your mount output above) you tried to copy from /mnt/home to ext3 filesystem (not fat32), is that right ?
(/dev/sdd2 on /mnt/sdd2 type ext3 (rw,relatime))

edit; /mnt/home is a symlink to a mounted partition, which one ? Please post output of readlink -f /mnt/home .

It was fat32 when I tried copying to it. Here is the ouput of the suggested command:
