I am booting from a usb stick and seems to work well, except for PPM will not allow any application to be installed. I updated the package and also updated quickpet and rebooted, but cannot install any app from PPM. Anyone have a solution?

Packages are still available here:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial-back ... llpackages
You will need to add the backports repository url and then update it to get listed contents.
Or in terminal
geany /etc/apt/sources.list

@gychang :-
I had the same kind of issues some years ago, Greg.....with UPup 'Raring' (running k3.9.9.2).
With it being one of the Ubuntu '6-month wonders', support for it had evaporated several years before I even tried it. I simply kitted it out entirely with .pets, SFSs, extracted tarballs & AppImages.
For my purposes, it ran like a dream.
I run Xenialpup 7.5 myself. Are you wanting anything specific..?
Mike.
