I've uploaded a new version of PuppEX Noble64 "original" with the ROX Desktop Environment. This time with the latest available stable kernel from kernel.org - 6.11.5.

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Noble64 "original" with the ROX Desktop Environment - Build 241020
This Puppy derivative is made by me. It is built from Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat) packages and packages built from woof-CE Recipes. I've also compiled a brand new kernel - 6.6.2-exton. This is possibly the best PuppEX version I've ever made. Everything just works! I could run the system very well on all of my six different computers. Among them on a really old computer – Acer Aspire 5102WLMi from 2006. I've included devx_puppex-noble64.sfs in the ISO file. Load it if you need it. Study all installed packages in this PuppEX build.

Everything is working? are you sure?

I did a short test with the installed PCManFM (gtk)
The menu has multiple entries for PCManFM
please have a look at /etc/xdg/menus/hierarchy and update the desktop file

the menu entry of PCManFM has no icon

PCManFM doesn't show devices, network, applications, desktop, trash

Missing icons is not so important. Easy to fix.

Mount with the mount app.

Samba connections via PCManFM is not possible, but you can connect with a terminal command.

PCManFM is able to mount/unmount devices and to connect to samba share

Yes "normally" PCManFM can do that, but not in all distros. Something is obviously missing in PuppEX Noble64. And in all other PuppEX versions.

The command I use for Samba connections: smbclient \\\\192.168.0.38\\LINUX -U arne

Could the problem with SAMBA be the target server allows SMB2 or above (which it should for good security)?

Yes, the gvfs package was missing, but unfortunately installing it doesn't help. Not in my latest PuppEX anyway. I did forget about gvfs. Normally it should be enough to make Samba work in PCManFM if also cifs-utils and winbind are installed.

SMB2: I don't think that is the problem since Samba works. Watch this screenshot. Just when using PCManFM for the connection.

I can't criticize your work as I've always found your Puppies to be excellent. The problem is finding them. AFAICT, the most relevant link in your OP for PuppEX Noble64-Build 241020 brings a potential User here, https://puppex.exton.se/. From there, one has to guess, often wrongly. Eventually if one perservers a download link for an ISO is found. Those unfamiliar with your work won't. It took me over 10 minutes going from one URL trying the links on it to another and trying the links on it to find the link for PuppEX Noble64-Build 241020 and I only perservered because I know how good your work is. [I'd provide a direct link, but I've since lost it ].

My recollection has been every one of your Puppys I've tried presents the same challange. Please provide a direct link in your OPs to the Puppy it offers.

The reason I don't provide direct download links for each PuppEX version is that I want presumptive PuppEX users to read my INFO before downloading.

Thanks for the direct link to "your" repo. I now remember what threw me off. The name of the Puppy I wanted to download is "puppex-noble64-uefi-devx-original-desktop-902mb-241020.iso". Scanning the page I saw the devx and originally skipped over it. When I got back to that page the size of the ISO and date of publication were the clues suggesting this was the Puppy I wanted.

Maybe you're including too much information in naming. "Couldn't see the forest because of the trees". "puppex-noble64-241020.iso" or maybe "puppex-noble64-JWM-241020.iso" to distinguish it from "puppex-noble64-mate-241007.iso" might have been clearer.

By now most new Linux ISOs include the files needed to boot from UEFI computers. So that notation isn't necessary. Also, maybe considering not including the devx in the ISO. Many users will never compile so adding 171 Mbs to a download may be a deterent, especially over slow wifi. [FWIW, I downloaded your ISO to my laptop near my router. To do so to my desktop with its flaky wifi would have taken over an hour even if successful. There's a good chance during that time I would have loss the connection.] Do make the devx available with an appropriate name, e.g. "puppex-noble64-jwm-devx.sfs" for those who want it. Separating it saves bandwidth. Also, AFAIK, the devx for "puppex-noble64-jwm" and "puppex-noble64-mate" may be interchangeable. If so, both storage space and bandwidth are conserved.

Just some ideas. Don't be offended. I really would like to see more people becoming familiar with your work. And always take into consideration that not every idea I have is a good one.

No problems to report for puppex-noble64-uefi-devx-original-desktop-902mb-241020.

My download is quick and in-line in size for other forum distros. So your packaging does NOT affect this distro's performance while it offers a single packaging for several forum users (@Jasper and several others, stemsee+etc, come to mind) who would take advantage in the packaging.

The ONLY concern I have, as I do with ALL forum distros, is a need for some simple admin tools that are tiny and extremely helpful, IMHO. They are only terminal commands:

• findsmb (a network utility presented by @01micko that is extremely useful if you have other devices sharing on your home's network)

• BTOP as it is much much more expressive of system information than TOP/HTOP

• TLDR because ALLof us need a quick example from time to time

• Neofetch/Fastfetch for some simple helpful system information in a clear columnar layout

More and more forum distro see a need for these tools and are including them to be helpful to both users, admin, and developers, alike.

I will be testing bare-metal on my home network, later, where I will be seeing if I can replicate the SAMBA issue you have shared.

I did some initial testing.

Memory usage

mpv.conf needs to be adjusted ......... it seems that in my case VA-API has not included with the compiling of mpv (?)

The only OS that I know it works is FP95.

I did rearrange your original ISO and stripped out Palemoon, DevX and the Fdrv and the end result was a considerably smaller ISO.

I removed the fdrv for users who are happy to use their existing firmware files from previous builds.

I am not planning on uploading the smaller ISO as there are still some 'bugs' that need fixing first.

I did encounter an issue with GParted and StickPup.

GParted did allow me to go through the steps of formatting a USB flash drive and confirmed that it had done so.

Tried using StickPup to install an ISO and received an error message to inform me that 'FAT32 was not able to be created'.

Checked the drive on a different PC and it was not recognised in Windows.

Used VoidPup64 to format it once again and then install an ISO which worked fine.

If anyone wants to try this 'cut down' ISO

Just reading through the package list and realised that my onboard Gfx driver was not included ...i915

If you do decide to continue with future updates, can this be included?

Compiled an application which worked with no issue.

Tearing: I have no such problems on my computers. I guess it is a hardware problem on yours.
