Given the Firefox message that all older versions have to be updated because of certificate issues the above video covers most things.

I was always of the opinion that previous settings would be applied to the new install. To my dismay I find that this is, in fact, not correct - well in my install anyway ( I have a number of versions of Firefox in /mnt/home so maybe that is the problem).

Is it possible to (a) find out which profile the new install uses,
(b) find out which profile the current install uses,
(c) rename the new profile as determined in (b) - I know about two files with the same name ...

Is there a simpler method?

Instead of me formulating how to write this I asked some Google AI entity to do it:

Yes, you can find out which profile a new Firefox installation uses by accessing the "Profile Manager" while Firefox is closed, which will show you the currently selected profile for that installation; you can access this by typing "firefox -p" in the run dialog on Windows or using a similar command on other operating systems.
Key points about checking your Firefox profile:

Accessing the Profile Manager:
To see which profile is currently active, close Firefox and then open the run dialog (Windows key + R) and type "firefox -p".

Identifying the profile:
The Profile Manager window will display a list of available profiles, with the currently selected one highlighted.
Changing profiles:
If you want to switch to a different profile, simply select it from the list in the Profile Manager.

Noticed the disclaimer so here that is :

Generative AI is experimental.

TBH, if you want to run multiple different versions of any browser, then IMHO you can't beat running them all in 'portable' format. It sidesteps all this "Which profile is in use?" malarkey, because each 'portable' version will always run with its own, dedicated profile.....and NO other.

Besides, for at least the last couple of years Firefox has been highly resistant to running with what IT sees as an "out-of-date" profile.......unless it's remained "in use" during the update process, i.e., updating via the built-in updater.

If you do a fresh install, then add-in a previous profile it will bitch like a good'un. Don't pass "Go", don't collect £200, etc....it's a "no-go". Won't play ball, and sits in a corner and sulks. (AND pouts, too.....) :o

@ mikewalsh

I always really enjoy your posts - down to earth, full of information, advice and humour.

What I have done was as I suggested in my post above. Before checking back into the forum!

However not everything "came across" in the profile:

1. I have a file /mnt/home/firefox/distribution which I had to manually copy into the new install,
2. My preferred fonts didn't come across in the profile.

I can understand 1# but I wrongly assumed everything else would be in the old profile.

P.S. The new install "seems" to be working OK. Time will tell if anything else didn't come across.
