Alsamixer Equalizer Not Working - SOLVED

Hi All! I'm having trouble getting Alsamixer or pEqualizer working. I can access them and move the bars all up and down but the sound doesn't change.
The DeaDBeef-1.8.3 equalizer works great for my own music library. But I'd like an equalizer for listening to online podcasts, interviews, youtube etc. By any chance is there a way to get DeaDBeef working with online content?
Sound Card Wizard is set up and working with:
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH]. device 0: ALC221 Analog [ALC221 Analog]
Do you need more information? If it requires commandline I'll (sadly) need step-by-step instructions.
Thanks for your help.

First thing.
Have you fully updated Bionicpup64 8.0 by using Quicket?
Quickpet ->Info ->Bionicpup updates
Then rebooted, making sure the save is updated, so changes are now being used.
May not fix your issue, but Bionicpup64 will work better.
anyway, doing this will make sure you have a good working install. A lot of little things did not get into the Bionicpup64 8.0 ISO.
This will add some bug fixes and make some programs operate better.
I do wonder with the specs you have in your signature space.
Why you are not using one of the very new versions of Puppy?

Hi, yes I used Quickpet to update and reboot. As to why I've not upgraded to a newer version: My commandline skill still sucks after 24 years with linux. That's not from lack of trying but from a learning disorder. Every time I attempt an upgrade, try to install a package that's not in the package manager, or even just update something like LibreOffice, it NEVER goes smoothly. Then I'm stuck with a bunch of broken things that take me a painfully long time to resolve. I don't have time or patience for that.
Meanwhile (except for using an ancient version LibraOffice) BionicPup pretty much just works. I managed a successful reinstall a few months ago when my system suddenly got buggy; it's been working fine since then but I've never had a working equalizer outside of DeaDBeef.

There are a few things you can try but this may be the easiest for system wide change, see: https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. ... 60#p131160. make sure you save the changes. Also make sure you access and change all 10 levels of the equalizer because all the sliders may not show when you open it so maximize your screen to see them all. This method bypasses pEqualizer so don't change anything with pEqualizer afterwards.

Thank you amethyst. These are the instructions in your link:

Make sure you have the file .asoundrc present in /root but if not, download the attached zip file, unzip and place the file in /root. To access and set the levels for the equalizer, run the following command in terminal:
I actually saw that post and tried it before starting this thread. I downloaded and extracted .asoundrc into
/root. I don't see the file anywhere after extracting it; is that normal? I can open up the alsamixer but moving the bars up and down doesn't effect the sound. One by one I moved them all up to max, then moved them all down to zero, but nothing changes.
When I look in asound.zip.extracted/ it's empty. Is this normal?

@tigerflag - .asoundrc is a hidden file so you need to check the appropriate button in your file manager to view/see it.

try this ... select either alsa eq or hardware eq controls if present.
asoundrc from another system that does not have the same hardware audio card should not work.

Since your Bionicpup uses rox as file manager, you can left-click rox's "Eye" on the top-toolbar to view hidden files.
You may have to Menu>Exit>Restart-x (Graphical Server) to activate the file. Restart-x causes Puppys to re-catalog their contents.

Things have gone from bad to worse. I haven't tried stemsee's kind suggestion yet. I haven't done anything new but now DeaDBeef is broken. It won't play files anymore. It's permanently in a stopped state. I can create a playlist but can't get it to start.
I decided to uninstall and reinstall it. I went into package manager and uninstalled DeaDBeef. It said uninstall was successful. But package manager also still shows it as Installed. While it's been deleted from the menu, the shortcut icon is still in my taskbar. It still opens; it just won't play. While package manager says it's installed, it doesn't show up in any "uninstall" list to be uninstalled again.
I've done two complete reboots.
I don't know if I should start a new thread or not. Seems like messing with asound somehow broke DeaDBeef. Danged if I know what to do now.

1- In regarding to your new broken sound problem, assuming you've put the above .asoundrc file in /root, you can probably remove it and reboot. I'm assuming you didn't have one there before (bionicpup64 is set to use a different file in /etc). [a .asoundrc.bak might be there however]
2. If you do restore your audio functions - when you say moving the bars in pequalizer is not working - is that for all applications? Or for which application is it not running? Are you running them as spot, or as root?
I'm guessing you're trying to use it for audio coming from a browser that's been set up to run as spot. In which case, you should be running pequalizer as spot too.
Also be aware that pequalizer should be run before opening the browser/application
If you're not running them as spot, can you open pequalizer and then provide the output on terminal for the following?

That worked! I removed .asoundrc and .asoundrc.bak. Now my supposedly-uninstalled-yet-still-installed DeaDBeef works again. I didn't even need to reboot!

I'm running as root. Was trying to get it to work with firefox for online content, e.g. youtube, podcasts, etc.

You're right! pEqualizer has to be running before I open my browser. I seem to remember reading that somewhere else but forgot it. When it's opened before opening firefox it works great!
Thank you SO much. My sincerest thanks to this forum for being here and to everyone who spent time trying to help me. You guys always come through!
Marking this as SOLVED.
