COSMIC desktop experiment

https://system76.com/cosmic

I SFS loaded:
003-cosmic-current-20240811.xzm (67.6MB)

from:
https://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?t=11412

on top of LxPupSc64

and typed:
xwin start-cosmic

and imagine my surprise when a COSMIC desktop appeared.......

however, there were fundamental problems:
it was the wrong dimension at 1280*800 and this seemed to be the only dimension possible
and although my wireless mouse worked my wireless keyboard didn't

but lots of things did "work"

checkdeps -system
showed only 1 missing dependency:
/usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-cosmic
libpipewire-0.3.so.0 => not found

/var/log/packages
gives a list of packages:

Thanks for sharing this

I did just download the file and simply renamed it to *.sfs

Loaded it up 'on the fly' and it presents lots of applications and some desktop entries already.

I did not know what to do with the file extension so did not progress further .............tested on FossaPup64-95.

It appears that Cosmic is dependent on SystemD.....

However if you type:
cosmic-comp cosmic-session

in lxterminal
you do get a very small "desktop" (852*496) where both the mouse and keyboard work and screen capture works:

... and it's Wayland compositor. There will be many problems with old GTK+ 2 applications, lots of overhead due to heavy use of Xwayland things that aren't Wayland-native won't work at all or won't work well. The best user experience you can provide is running the DE inside a X11 window, on top of X.Org.
