Why is printing so difficult ? I have been everywhere, trying everything.
See my last attempt below. Why is terminal saying no such file ?

Could be that the terminal is not opened in the Downloads directory, try doing cd ~/Downloads first and then run the chmod command.

What specific version of Puppy are you using?

To give you better advice need to know specifically what Puppy version you are using?????

there may be a pet package or more direct way to install in the specific Puppy version.

It seems you are trying to install hplip printer driver package.

The exact version of Puppy is going to determine how to do the install.

Here is one thing about doing this in a terminal.

In the Rox file manager window open to the location of the hplip run file.

To run it in a terminal.

Open a terminal this way:
Right click in an open area of the Rox window display.
From the right click menu select window ->terminal here

Now the terminal is set to take commands for stuff in this location.

Usually do have to have it entered with a ./ at the beginning of the file name.

Note:
The chmod command is giving the run file execute permissions, so it can run. (common for stuff downloaded from the internet, to not have exec permissions. Security thing, so it cannot just run on it's own)

In Rox.
you can do this also by right clicking on the file.
Select properties.
Check all the exec options.
Select refresh.

Bigpup- thanks for the nags - think I got the OS info on my signature now.

I ran the ' cd ~/Downloads ' and it opened a bunch of files in a new separate folder in Downloads and gave a warning in
terminal not to run it in root. What do I do now to access/open/run this app ?

This is the more direct way to get hplip.

If you are using BookwormPup64 10.0.7

Use the menu ->Setup ->Package manager (synaptic) program to install hplip package.

On the programs main window top left is button icon Reload.
Click it so the software repositories information is updated.

Now select search and do a search for hplip.
In the list of found packages will be one that is just named hplip.
Right click on it and select mark for installation.
It will pop up a info window showing any other packages needed. Also select mark for them.

To install it all, click on the apply icon button top of synaptic program window.

After the install of all packages completes.

Close the synaptic package manager program.

Because this is added software that will be stored in the save file/folder.

Do a reboot making sure the save is updated.

Now try to use Cups program to setup the printer.

Report in detail what happens?

I had used synaptics to download hplip.
I am nearly there, see screenshot - comments below.

I did not populate that field with the name of the printer,
CUPS detected it when I connected the cable.
Tried to print 3 different formats inc .abw but it hung each
time with 76% cpu usage and was overheating. No print.
So near, yet so far !

Are you able to print the test page from CUPS?

According to this site, your printer is supported by the foo2zjs free software printer driver:

You probably need to install that driver and use that instead of the hplip driver. It happens with one of my printers (HP-P1006), it needs the foomatic driver, it doesn't work with the standard hplip drivers.

I'd try installing the 2 pets linked at post #8 viewtopic.php?p=26249#p26249 in this thread: viewtopic.php?p=26249
You can always uninstall the package if it doesn't work.

Thanks - Test page wont print from CUPS home.
Tried to download the Foo drivers via synaptics but got a 'broken packages' error msg so
I posted separately on that. I feel that those drivers will work. My printer model is listed.
To go direct to your link it says Ghostsomething app which also needs snapd and that is
also giving me error msgs.
I downloaded and 'installed' those 2 foo pets but where are they ? Not showing on any search.

I guess no one is printing much nowadays so it hasn't been a priority to make a good wiki.

Print set up does continue to be a real hit or completely miss type of thing. Got a Canon 3600 running with WiFi on the home network which after finding the right Canon discovery package for F96-CE_4 it was discovered by CUPS and works. But doing the same on KLV-Airedale has not achieved the same success yet.

I have had better luck using Foo while trying many different distros with an older samsung laser. And as I only print a couple times a year, I dont mind booting a different frugal when i need to use my printer. I cant see which pup you are using in your signature from here, but Barry has included foomatic drivers in easy.

This is why I've stuck with HP printers where ever possible, because HP seems to have a comprehensive CUPS driver package available in almost every repo, and they work.

It doesn't matter whether you're a raw beginner asking your first question on the forum OR a veteran Puppy user who's used Puppy for many years......the same principle always applies. The more information you can give us, the easier you make it for us to assist. "Help us to help you".

To the best of my knowledge, not one person here has got the hang of using a crystal ball..! Too many folks still post about stuff as though the folks they're addressing are there in the room with them, looking over their shoulder....seeing exactly what they're seeing, AS they see it.

Certain things can be dealt with largely using generic Linux commands. Others will be Puppy-specific, while still others will be determined mainly by the user's hardware setup. There's no such thing as a "one size fits all" solution. Not where computers are concerned..!

While they're extremely useful and immensely capable tools, they can simultaneously be the most frustrating & annoying devices on the face of this earth. It takes a certain mindest to methodically work your way through all the possible combinations of things that directly affect any given issue.......and, frankly, not that many people have the patience, OR understanding to do so. So don't feel bad about asking questions, 'cos that's what we're here for.

TBH, printing is one of the main reasons I still stick with older Puppies. My Epson all-in-one - a forerunner of the enterprise-class WorkForce series - is now nearly 15 yrs old. The printer/scanner drivers for my Stylus SX218 worked fine up until about 5 years ago.....then many distros dropped one of the critical components that Epson drivers relied upon. The modern re-write of these drivers doesn't function at all under Linux now. Not for me. Not with MY hardware.

I guess I shall eventually have to "upgrade" the thing so's I can have something that'll function under modern distros.......but I can guarantee that whatever I replace it with won't last a fraction as long, OR be as reliable as my old 'tank' of a printer has been for the last decade and a half. Planned obsolescence will see to that.....

I'll answer that with this. I'd say it's not so much a case of people aren't printing as much these days, as that with the majority of printers now being wireless & compatible with Apple's "AirDrop" tech (Apple ARE the developers behind CUPS anyway), these types of printers all have the necessary drivers already built-in to their firmware ROM chips OOTB. For many folks, printing is now not a "driver" issue so much as it is a "networking" issue.

As the years pass and technology evolves, so the user mindset has to change to keep up with it. Sad, but true. Time doesn't stand still, and technology very definitely doesn't!

Can't thank you all enough, especially you Mike !
I'm exhausted after 3 hours on it today.
Taking the rest of the day off. Got no Windows machine to test
if the printer itself is working to eliminate that and the cable.
I'm even getting msgs that the printer is out of paper.

I see you successfully installed the foomatic driver. From there, you should be able to print the CUPS printer test page. If not, check the default options for your printer, delete any other printer you have installed, or delete everything from CUPS and start from scratch installing just this driver.

I used to have much difficulty getting my printer to function in linux.

Some thread on this forum I read about IPP everywhere.
I still have not figured out connecting my printer via USB, but did figure out using it via wifi.

My HP printer has a wireless option, so I turned that on.
I made note of the ip address the printer uses in the wireless details screen on my printer.

I used the example command given and changed the ip address to what my printer is using.

example
# lpadmin -p myprinter -E -v "ipp://11.22.33.44/ipp/print" -m everywhere

Now I can print and use the CUPS page http://localhost:631/

This method will depend on the age of your printer and your CUPS version.

You all forgot to ask me if it was plugged in !
Shame of all shames on me. I pulled the printer out of the dark
cupboard floor among the old shoes etc to look for the serial number
and found the USB cable connector was pushed (forced ) into the Network cable socket.
Its printing fine now.
