Easiest way to share files between my Android 10 phone and Fossa 9.5? [SOLVED]

Post by Semme »

Hi Gang,

I've done this a while back with the EasyShare app but have been away from the hobby for enough time to have forgotten. My intention is to share between the two via my mobile hotspot. Could someone please provide a simple routine using FileZilla and a non-invasive (no data shared with third parties and no data collected) mobile app? If something other than FileZilla, that would be fine.

Keep in mind USB tethering is off the table.

TIA

SAMBA built into ALL forum distros. Been using wifi file exchanges between phones and PCs for over 20 years. NO wires. ... secure ... too easy.

Access any files you share from the forum PC ... write any info you want to transfer to the forum PC.

Hello @Semme

On my phone here's a list of free ones I tested couple years ago that work without hassle:

  • CX file Explorer

  • I still have EX file explorer

  • X-plore

  • Solid Explorer

For video and media listening/viewing (to transfer also) I use these free ones

  • VLC

  • MX Player

  • Media Player

There are many free options to choose from, that have SAMBA client built-in.

Use your PC SAMBA as you would share stuff for users on your LAN.

LAN users, including phones, TVs, and other PCs ... even some cameras, all have SAMBA clients available.

I have NOT used a wire to PC for any phone in decades. Its not necessary with forum PCs present. Most of these apps I use on my phone are also on my TV for moving files to/from the TVs USB port(s).

For me, this is great that my forum distro PCs have all I need, built-in, to make this so so so easy. Thus for this, I spend my time centering my forum distro to continue this simple ease of use activity.

What's neat about the forum distros is that the ONLY knowledge any user needs is to know the IP address of the PC running a forum distro which is sharing a folder. Use the same login ID that you use to sign in to your PC.

Anyone needing instructions on how to use your forum distro, let us know. We can make it simple for anyone.There are TONS of users on this forum who will jump to help.

Hope you find this info clear and useful.

Bizarre how and when my mobile hotspot chooses to shut down and crash my reply.

It's late folks, I'll have to get back sometime between tomorrow and this weekend.

Till then :thumbup: thank you all for your input.

Hi Semme, more options to make things more confusing! These are android apps for file sharing between devices from f-droid.org. F-droid promotes FOSS apps that are are privacy and security related.
https://search.f-droid.org/?q=file+sharing&lang=en

Samba options from F-droid
https://search.f-droid.org/?q=samba&lang=en

You can try different words or word combos in their search as those links are not all-inclusive of what is on their site.

Generally, those apps all require a wifi network with both devices connected to the same wifi network so should be ok using your hotspot. I use a cable myself.

For other android considerations concerning privacy and security there are other sources for apps besides google play. If interested in those types of apps this thread may be of interest viewtopic.php?t=9630

IMHO the best Android app, no ads or tracking, for use with Samba is Total Commander + Total Commander Lan plugin.

Okay then,

1) LocalSend sounded great yet wouldn't fly aboard 9.5.

Yeah there were a few error messages. Still, disappointing.

2) Clarity, your suggestions sounded promising as well yet without a profiled routine, a no-go.

3) dogcat, your offerings were noteworthy as well, yet no dice.

4) wizard, I felt good about making things happen with your suggestion yet didn't understand *how* to get the ball rolling.

In the end, for me @ least, it was spiritwild's, "Olive Tree Ftp Server" and Pup's built-in gFTP that allowed things to happen.

wizard,

In your opinion. which would be a good intuitive app to run on Fossa's end when trying to send files from my TC equipped Android phone?

YO, Rocky,

Do you or anyone else have a pre-packaged SFS of LocalSend?

Code: Select all

root# ldd /usr/bin/localsend_app
	linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007fff319fe000)
	/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgtk3-nocsd.so.0 (0x00007f5d2fce1000)
	libdesktop_drop_plugin.so => not found
	libdynamic_color_plugin.so => not found
	libfile_selector_linux_plugin.so => not found
	libgtk_plugin.so => not found
	libpasteboard_plugin.so => not found
	libscreen_retriever_plugin.so => not found
	libtray_manager_plugin.so => not found
	liburi_content_plugin.so => not found
	liburl_launcher_linux_plugin.so => not found
	libwindow_manager_plugin.so => not found
	libflutter_linux_gtk.so => not found

This doesn't fly aboard philb's original 9.5.

@Semme

If you want to use Total Commander on your phone, then you will need to just setup Samba file sharing on Puppy. The programs are already included in F95. EDIT: Your phone will be the client device.

-Menu>Network>Samba Simple Management

Here's a little primer on file transfer/sharing.

File transfer/sharing between computers always has:
1. A CLIENT, the local computer being operated
2. A SERVER, the remote computer being accessed

The two types of file transfer methodologies commonly used are:

1. FTP (file transfer protocol)
Minuses
-requires an FTP program for both client & server
-usually limited to only transferring files
Pluses
-Most Puppies have both client & server programs included
-Arguably easier to setup in cross platform configurations

2. File Sharing using Samba
Minuses
-file sharing must be setup on the server computer
-Arguably harder to setup in cross platform configurations
Pluses
-The file share can be can mounted and used as part of the client file system. Files can be opened, edited, created, saved, copied, moved or streamed just like on a local drive.
-Most Puppies include Samba and have easy setup tools
-the client computer requires no special program and can use its normal file management tools
-easier if you have multiple clients accessing file shares (no client software to setup or learn)

When using either method, you should disable any firewall program until after it is working, then if you wish enable the firewall and set rules for your method.

:cool: wizard Mate, good call!

I could grasp how you explained the method you supplied yet still needed a bit of hand-holding when it came to plug'in the numbers. So I ran a search and came across this post by Clarity which pin-pointed it for me.

"BRAVO!!" I'm in, Baby! :D

:thumbup: Thank's a bunch to all contributors!
