BookwormPup64 10.0.7 Brave Browser Problems {Solved}

Post by PeteAir »

System: Dell Optiplex790/SSD-ext4/8GB/Nvidia-gt710-470drivers loaded
Been running 10.0.6/Frugal=Save-folder on this system for several months perfectly with Firefox, Vivaldi and Brave browsers. Yesterday I loaded 10.0.7 with a save folder from 10.0.6 without nvidia drivers, loaded drivers no problem. Firefox and vivaldi no prob. Brave failed to start, apt could not access Brave servers, synaptic no access to brave server. So I uninstalled brave and unpacked brave portable to mnt/home it launched and updated. But it will not let you choose a bookmarks.html to import . It will not load any html file or password.csv on my local disk{Access Denied}.
All other programs that I have installed in 10.0.6 save folder have worked perfectly. I did load coretemp to get cpu temps to work.
Any ideas on Brave? The new Kernal/security?
thanks pete

The html bookmarks file you want to import has to have spot:spot privileges. I just have a directory named bookmarks in /home/spot, alongside /home/spot/downloads, and set the appropriate spot:spot permissions for that bookmarks dir and file. I run Brave as portable (@mikewalshs') in Bookworm64 10.0.7 daily. The only issue I have from time to time is if I shut down the OS abruptly while messing around with it with Brave running is that on restart Brave has singleton locks that have to be cleared before it will start. Brave is pickier in those matters than either Slimjet or ungoogled in my experience.

My pups: LxPupSc64 and Voidpup64 with LXDE ydrv & synaptics touchpad drivers, both using savefiles. Ydrv based NoblePup64 (JWM & LXDE), Bookworm64 & Fossapup64-small (LXDE/PCManFM). No savefiles, no fdrvs there. :thumbup:

@PeteAir :-

I gave up bothering with HTML bookmark files in any of the Chromium 'clones' some years ago. I accept that not everybody has as many browsers on the system at any one time as I do (!), but my approach is a bit more 'hands-on'.

You go into any Chromium clone's profile - where your bookmarks are already set-up - and you will see a file named, simply, 'Bookmarks'. For any new browser - where you have fired-it up (thus creating your profile) - just open the profile and drag a copy of this file across. That's it!

It doesn't matter if you do this as /root, and the browser wants to run-as-spot. For any of my portables that run-as-spot, the LAUNCH script is written to recursively reset spot:spot permissions for the profile, browser directory, and any additional libs BEFORE firing-up the browser.....so there's no requirement to have to 'chown' things yourself.

@Marv :- I discovered that 'singleton lock' stuff quite a while ago! Ever since, I've had a wee script inside the portable's top-level directory that clears them for me.....

Mike. ;)

I don't know offhand. My update from 10.0.6 to 10.0.7 went without hitch though I run without a savefile or folder -all my customizations are either ydrv resident or portables- and haven't yet tried to import a html bookmarks file into Brave. I'll try that later today.

:thumbup:

Later I did try to export/import bookmarks from Brave and Slimjet and ungoogled, all portables running as spot in both my 10.0 6 and 10.0.7 installs of Bookworm64, running LXDE -full disclosure-. None of them would open a file-chooser dialog box to import or export. Also, choosing to print something from them and selecting save to PDF, none would open a file choosing dialog. I, like @mikewalsh, just grab the bookmarks file from within the chromium derivs when needed and generally either print to one of my local printers or choose CUPS-PDF so hadn't seen that. The inbuilt Firefox ESR run-as -spot opens the file chooser dialog correctly in all instances and the chromium based browsers also all do so in the current Void64 and LxPupSc64 pups, both also running LXDE. I'll check fossapup64 9.5 now...

Same browsers, now in Fossapup64 9.5. Choose file dialog opens correctly to import or export bookmarks or to print to PDF. This install also runs LXDE. Just for hoots, I'll try Noblepup64 version 8 from github next...

Same browsers, now in the Noblepup64 version 8 install. Pretty much bog standard frugal install, JWM, savefile, etc. Either asking to import or export bookmarks from any of the chromium based browsers or printing to PDF opens a choose file dialog box correctly here also.

So, here at least, the failure to open a file choosing dialog box is in Bookworm64 only, at least in 10.0.6 or 10.0.7.

:thumbup:

marv, on my 10.0.6 Vivaldi and Brave are .deb installs and file chooser works. On my fossapup Vivaldi is a .sfs and cjhhooser works fine. Om 10.0.7 Vivaldi, Edge and Slimjet file chooser works. Only Brave is tha Bitch.
I learned 20 years ago that all software does not work with all OS software and hardware.
I did get Brave Portable working on this .0.7 but it looks horrible compared to Vivaldi.
It might be Miller Time

marv, you got a lot more done today than I did.
Cheers To Ya

I have marked this solved for Mikes advice on the Bookmarks file and Marv on the Spot folder for html files.
Thanks
