USA China on ARM and RISC-V processors

Post by mimine »

Hey,

ARM processors are replacing x86 processors now.

The problem with ARM is the patents and the high prices the companies have to pay.

There is an alternative called RISC-V , which is patent free and will replace ARM.

There is also a technology war between the USA and China on ARM and on RISC-V.

RISC-V is still young, years or even decades away from replacing x86 or ARM. But it has many things going for it.

The architecture is free-to-license, which lowers the barrier to entry and cost. It also has a flexible design to bring more compute to modern workloads.

RISC-V Summit attendees were thrilled and upset by the U.S. government’s interest in taming the open standard.

On the one hand, RISC-V came out of obscurity and reached the big leagues by attracting government attention. But the idea of Joe Biden’s administration intervening in developing RISC-V standards got a universal thumbs down

Some lawmakers - including two Republican House of Representatives committee chairmen, Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Democratic Senator Mark Warner - are urging Biden's administration to take action regarding RISC-V, citing national security grounds.

The lawmakers expressed concerns that Beijing is exploiting a culture of open collaboration among American companies to advance its own semiconductor industry, which could erode the current U.S. lead in the chip field and help China modernize its military. Their comments represent the first major effort to put constraints on work by U.S. companies on RISC-V.

The USA are doing EMBARGO to China for ARM processors which are closed source .

But the USA also try to do EMBARGO to China for RISC-V processors which are open source.

For example : GOOGLE REMOVED RISC-V FROM ANDROID

https://www.techspot.com/news/102843-go ... ernel.html

Google just removed RISC-V support from the Android kernel
RISC-V is gone from the general Android kernel, motivations aren't entirely clear yet
